“Next Man Up”

September 29th, 2024

Jamel Dean explains.

Jamel Dean was polite about it. But the Bucs’ veteran corner told Joe last week that expecting the Eagles to be a less dangerous team because of injuries on offense would be downright stupid.

“For the most part, they are the same team,” Dean said even after the Bucs learned of the Eagles’ injuries to their two top receivers, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

Joe had asked Dean if the Eagles were a different club than the one the Bucs knocked out of the playoffs in January.

“They added some weapons,” Dean cautioned. “Now they have more weapons.”

When Joe asked if he meant the NFL’s rushing leader Saquon Barkley, Dean yelped, “Yeah!”

So Dean is expecting the Eagles to be, well, the Eagles. “They are always a physical team,” he said. “Now they have more weapons. So yeah, they have weapons. And I’m sure they have the same mentality, ‘Next man up.'”

If the Bucs defense can shut down the Eagles’ best healthy weapon, Barkley, then the Bucs will have neutered the Eagles.

Of all people, a six year vet who does nothing but drop would be ints n get beat. I’ll take Travis Hunter over him any day. As a matter of fact, let’s give up Dean n a first round to get Travis Hunter. That boy is a football genuis.

Maybe Logan Hall can fall down on Saquon after an 7 yard gain and sprain one of Saquon’s ligaments.

Has Jamel ever said why he likes to play 20’yards off a receiver on 3rd and 4?

  4. Defense Rules Says:

Packers shut down Barkley pretty good … he only had 24 rushes for 109 yards (4.5 YPC). Packers lost, with Barkley scoring 2 TDs rushing & 1 TD passing.

Falcons did a great job of shutting him down … Barkley only had 22 rushes for 95 yards (4.3 YPC). Falcons won, with Barkley not scoring any TDs.

Saints didn’t fare as well against Barkley … he only had 17 rushes but got 147 yards (8.6 YPC). Saints lost, with Barkley scoring 2 TDs rushing.

Ironically, the team with the worst run defense (Falcons ranked at #28) did the best against Barkley. Saints (#8 run defense) & Packers (#10 run defense) couldn’t keep him out of the end zone.

Focusing on the Saints game, Barkley ran left 5 times & right 12 times. Of his 147 yards rushing, 65 yards came on a run over Left Guard in the 4th qtr for a TD and he got another TD (4 yds) over Right Guard later in the 4th qtr to win the game. Bucs’ DLine will be hard-pressed to keep him under control given all the injuries that we’re dealing with.
