“Basically Your Kryptonite At This Point In Your Career”

September 28th, 2024

Eagles fans are not happy with one of their greats from early this century.

Hugh Douglas was a ferocious Eagles pass rusher (1998-2002). Old Bucs fans remember the All-Pro well.

Now, Douglas is a weekday host on Philadelphia sports radio giant WIP. Despite being barked at by his co-host this week, Douglas wouldn’t move off his belief that the undermanned Eagles will fall to the Bucs on Sunday.

Per Douglas, Bucs head coach/defensive guru Todd Bowles will sell out to stop Saquon Barkley, the NFL’s leading rusher in 2024. Bowles will make Hurts beat him through the air and Douglas doesn’t think Hurts is capable.

He sees (like most sane thinkers) how Hurts has struggled repeatedly against Bowles defenses and now Hurts likely will be without star receivers A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith, and Pro Bowl right tackle Lane Johnson.

“Basically your Kryptonite at this point in your career; he’s your Kryptonite. That’s Coach Bowles and the way that he’s been able to attack Jalen,” Douglas said of Hurts.

The Eagles rank second in the NFL in total yards of offense, but Douglas is confident that will be short-circuited on Sunday.

He also doesn’t like how Eagles defensive players have been chirping in the media. Douglas cited defensive tackle Jalen Carter telling reporters that Baker Mayfield tends to hold the ball too long.

Perhaps most interesting among Joe’s hours listening to Philly sports radio this week was chatter about the Eagles possibly preparing to limit the touches of Barkley, who is averaging 24 per game through Week 3.

That pace would subject Barkley to the most punishment of his injury-prone career and the Eagles want him available in December and January.

After the first two games. I was impressed with this team. Overcoming injuries and getting a win in Detroit. That is what good teams are able to do. I was up beat and looking forward to the season. But I gotta be honest after week 3? Good teams don’t get beat like that. I’m hoping week 3 was an anomaly. This Bucs vs Eagles game is gonna come down to who wants it more. Both the Eagles and Bucs have injuries. And after last week. I don’t have a whole lot of faith this defense can shut down the Eagles run game. I also don’t see this defense suddenly creating a smothering pass rush. So this idea of shutting down the run and forcing Jalen Hurts to throw. All depends on the defensive line which doesn’t have Vita Vea the run stuffer. Bowles may have to bring eight in the box to stop the run. And if that works. Without a pass rush Hurts will have plenty of time for completions. So unless Bowles has a secret fool proof plan resurrecting a semblance of a pass rush. What are we even talking about?

  2. Permanently Moderated Says:

This game could go either way. It all depends on which Bucs team shows up. The one that wants to win or the one that is just cashing paychecks.

  3. BucU Says:

Agreed. It wasn’t just that we lost last week. It was the way we lost. A complete and utter collapse across the board from the very get go. Confidence level after that disgusting performance? 1 out of 10.
This team is fragile physically and emotionally. Speaking of fragile I heard Kancey is OUT again for Sunday. LOL. He sucks. We need Vita and AW3 back asap. Kancey should be working at an ice cream shop where it’s safer for him. He’s not cut out for the NFL.

Bowles has always stopped the run first. That skill declined last year and without Kancey, Winfield and a weakened Vea, I am not sure this defense can stop the Eagles offensive line and Barkley from running against us.

There is a whole lot of difference between Denver’s and Philadelphia’s offensive line.

Also, not sure our current O line coach can stop the Eagles rushers. His ability to coach up pass protection appears to be just cr*p.

  5. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    F the eagles

  6. Hodad Says:

Geno, not sure I’d blame our O line coach for Mauch getting beat like a red headed step child. We went out and replaced Hainsey with Barton who I think is doing well. We counted on Mauch getting better, and he hasn’t. We replaced Stinnie, but with what, a Giant cast off. New York had a bad O line last year, and Lichts answer to our woes was signing one of their woes. Gruden used to say, it ain’t about the Xs, and Os, it’s about the Jimmys, and Joes. At the pro level in any sport it’s more about talent then coaching. Phil Jackson looked like a genius when he had Jordan, and Kobe, not so much when he went to NY. At some point it’s up to the players to just beat the man in front of them, that’s not happening enough with this Buc team.

  7. Larrd Says:

No Nix didn’t have AJ Brown or DeVonta Smith or Lane Johnson last week. Come to think of it, he didn’t have Saquon Barkley, even.

    Jeffrey,

It’s hard to be a ‘good team’ in the NFL when you’re missing so many key stsrters like the Bucs are.

We could be a great if we have all our starters healthy. Without Winfield, Vita, Kancey, & Goedeke, every week is going to be an uphill battle and a total crapshoot whether we can win or not.

Get everyone back healthy, and we can make a Superbowl run. Until then, it’s going to be tough sledding.

Bucs D line soft. Can’t make chicken salad from chicken ish.

  11. Lt. Dan Says:

“…defensive guru Todd Bowles” Lets make a deal Joe. If the Eagles lay 30 or more on the Bucs tomorrow, we sh!t can guru / genius and other non applicable monikers associated with Bowles and his defensive acumen. Deal ? I’ll even throw in a 12 pack of your favorite Big Storm pour.

It really is amazing how 1 week of football changes the thinking. I doubt seriously we are a bad football team. It’s not all doom and gloom. When games matter this team WILL show up and is littered with talent across the board. Every team has a weakness. Some more than others. We are dominant in any facet of the game yet, but our secondary is way better than they played last week. I will never have an answer for why Bowles and Dean allowed 453 passes underneath and Im sure by now they won’t let it happen again. My biggest concern right now if Vea plays is our LB core. You can really see age catching up with David and Santa Claus will beat Britt to the game. Jordan Whitehead is gonna need to be the difference maker this week.

  13. Bojim Says:

Still think Dennis should shadow Barcley.

Watch tomorrow. Maybe it will only be 451 then.

This is what I have been bitching about since the season start. 5-10 yards to go and we see the corners 10 yards off scrimmage TIME AFTER TIME!

Press coverage is foreign to this team.

  15. gotbbucs Says:

    Jalen Carter isn’t wrong.

  16. ManzielMadness Says:

A lot of people revising history today? I went back until 2020 and the only team to win a Super Bowl and not to get blown out at least once was the 2023 Chiefs.

2024- Chiefs lost 24-9 lost to the broncos
2022- rams win Super Bowl, but also have 3 straight weeks where they lost by double digits:
    28-16 lost to TEN
    31-10 lost to SF
    36-28 lost to GB
    2021 – Bucs win SB
    Lose 38-3 to NO
    2020 – KC wins SB
    Loses to LAC 38-21

  17. ManzielMadness Says:

^Goong by the year they won the Super Bowl

  18. ManzielMadness Says:

Point being this is the NFL. Have to be prepared each week or you can lose. I think we took Denver lightly last week, however, the season is not over.

  19. LakelandBuc Says:

Jalen Carter only mentioned what every NFL defensive player knows. The Eagles played the Bucs twice last season.

They know Mayfield holds the ball wayyyy too long….. it’s like he wants to get sacked..

  20. unbelievable Says:

I mean, Jalen Carter obviously just watched Baker last week…

He was holding the ball too long. And then eating sacks or throwing the ball away instead of hitting open receivers.

  21. Saskbucs Says:

BucU… Kancey played 15 games last year. He was impactful. Sucks he is out again to start this year but sheet happens. When Kancey is blowing up plays in the backfield later this season, I will remember all the clown “Kancey sucks” takes.

  22. Saskbucs Says:

Bucs fan in Oregon … I agree and it’s madness. One thing if you are playing Mahomes or Allen (they will still kill you all game taking what you give them but at least you have to respect their deep ball), it’s a completely different thing when playing Bo Nix in his 3rd game.
