Turnover Machine Jalen Hurts

September 27th, 2024

When you’re a starting NFL quarterback, you never want to be in the same sentence as Will Levis.

But that’s where Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts finds himself.

ESPN TV types have been barking all week about how Hurts can’t stop turning the ball over. And now he’s going to play the Bucs on Sunday without his two best receivers and his All-Pro right tackle. (That injury reality should be confirmed this afternoon.)

In fact, per ESPN data, since Week 13 of the 2023 season, Hurts has 12 turnovers, second only to Levis, the struggling Titans QB.

That’s no coincidence. Hurts is having issues seeing the field and holding onto the football.

Can the Bucs take advantage?

Former Eagles defensive end Chris Long, a big Eagles homer but also a very-pro-Bucs analyst on his Green Light podcast, said this week that he thinks Sunday’s game comes down to Hurts against the relentless Todd Bowles blitzes.

The Eagles, he said, will have to find fast and easy answers in the passing game for Hurts. And he thinks a return (likely) by Bucs run-stuffing manbeast Vita Vea will force the Eagles to win their share of key plays through the air to no-name receivers.

Hurts has been excellent against the blitz this season, better than 70 percent competion rate, but throw the numbers out the window without his major targets, Joe believes.

Joe sees this as a huge game for the Bucs’ inside linebackers. Lavonte David must to rise up and limit tight end Dallas Goedert, and Joe thinks SirVocea Dennis is an ideal guy to keep tabs on Saquon Barkley as a passing target out of the backfield.

As Long said without hesitation, K.J. Britt runs too often like he’s “stuck in the mud.”

Every team picks up the vaunted “relentless Todd Bowles blitzes” Just. Stop. Already. Two sacks in three games? Defensive guru my azz!

  2. Bucs 95 Says:

I see that us and the falcons have the least amount off sacks in the nfl

  3. Ed Says:

One of the reasons the Bucs blitz hasnt been working is a QB like Goff gets rid of the ball quickly and the Bucs are playing off the balll giving too much cushion. What’s worse is they are getting run on for 135 yards a game.

This game is a stack the box situation and heavy blitz. You have all backup WRs for Hurts so force him to throw the ball and take your chances that McCollum, Dean and Izien can play man against 4th and 5th string receivers. Stay with Dallas Goedert, he is their number one target.

Stack the box to keep Barkley from breaking off big chunks. I’m not confident that these defensive lineman can make tackles on their own so swarm as many as you can to the ball carriers and be more aggressive in gang tackling.

Bo Nix was supposed to be a turnover machine too.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘As Long said without hesitation, K.J. Britt runs too often like he’s “stuck in the mud.”

Oh Joe, that’s brutal. True, but brutal.

  11. Pewter Power Says:

per ESPN data, since Week 13 of the 2023 season, Hurts has 12 turnovers, second only to Levis

That stat is irrelevant considering how ESPN couldn’t stop talking about how they imploded last year. We’re Making fun of Britt but don’t act like just because Lavonte David is a hall of famer he’s the speedy guy he used to be. There’s one speedy linebacker on this team that actually plays maybe we get a fumble maybe we get an interception none of it means we’ll win. Zero sacks though! Jalen hurts could trip and fall, fumble the ball, pick it up and no Buc will still be in the backfield

    BillyBucco on the money!

    Ditto.

What’s the latest with Winfield? Is he getting close?

  15. unbelievable Says:

Yes, let’s definitely downplay our opponent. Sort of like:

    ““Antsy, Jittery” Bo Nix”
    “Laughing At Bo Nix”
    “Sad Broncos, Sorry Broncos”
“Broncos Preparing To Scale Back Sad Offense”

    etc., etc.

  16. Just me Says:

Joe… You live off your hopes and dreams. You were just as positive, if not more so, last week prior to the Broncos game.

    1) You shouldn’t seek validation and self-worth in anything outside of yourself, and that includes your beloved Bucs. And… You do.
    2) Please remember what happened last week before prognosticating.

  17. adam from ny Says:

been saying for the longest…the guy is not all that…

if i was a gm, my azz would never have even signed the guy to a long term big deal…

he will keep the eagles floating in the mid category during his philly stay…he’s not the guy
