Bucs’ Explosive Plays Imploding

September 25th, 2024

Not so explosive after Week 3.

After Week 1, the Bucs tied with the mighty Chiefs for the fifth-most explosive plays in the NFL. This filled Joe’s heart with so much joy and optimism.

Boy, what two weeks can do to a football team.

After a lackluster offensive production in Detroit in Week 2, and being shut down by Denver on Sunday, the Bucs’ explosive rate among NFL teams has cratered from fifth-best to eighth-worst.

That’s a huge drop.

In fact, the Stinking Panthers with Bryce Young and Andy Dalton, the Tua-less Dolphins and the Daniel Jones-led Giants all have better explosive play rates than the Bucs. Can you imagine?

Joe is starting to wonder if the Bucs put something on tape in Week 1 that the Lions caught and had success with and then Sean Payton and the Broncos just copied?

Not entirely surprising to hear. When the O-line plays has poorly as it has the past 2 weeks, there’s next to no chance for an explosive play to happen. Here’s hoping the return of Goedeke is a catalyst for an improvement there.

Liam Coen is responsible for the offense, and it’s production. It’s his responsibility to get this offense on the right track. He has to put the players in position to succeed. He has to call plays that will make this offense better. Calling plays according that the defense gives you

    Baker sucks

  4. Defense Rules Says:

Unless I miss my guess, explosive plays generally require holes for the RBs to pop through and pass protection to buy the QB time to find open receivers (especially deep?). Yes we did great in the first game, but in the last 2 games the 12 sacks & almost constant pressure on Baker have played havoc with this offense. Whodathunkit?

It all comes back to the OLine IMO. Our Bucs have beaten 2 good teams. Washington is now 2-1 and Detroit is also 2-1 … both teams only loss came at the hands of our Bucs. For all the attention that Sean Payton gets for his offensive genius, it’s Denver’s defense that made all the difference on Sunday. And oh ya, their defense is also higher rated at #6 (least Points Allowed) than Washington (#29) or Detroit (#9). And ya, our Bucs’ defense has fallen all the way to #15. Not good, although understandable given the injuries to our defensive starters.

QB play has a lot to do with explosive plays, sacks allowed, points scored also. In 2019 Jameis Winston was sacked 47 times in 16 games. The following season Tom Brady was sacked 27 times in 20 games, including the 4 postseason games. They were behind the same O- Line except for Rookie Tristan Whirfs replacing Big Dot at RT. And now Brady retires and Mayfield is picking up where Winston left off with the sacks…… he’s getting sack 60 % more than Brady..

    This is no coincidence
This is results of poor QB play

I see we are back on the Baker hate. That was fast. lol

  7. Bucs And Them Says:

I agree Defense Rules. Thereā€™s no way the o-line can look this bad just because Goedeke has been out. That hurts for sure but, the issues have to be bigger than just that. I have to think that Coen and his staff are part of the issue as well. Theyā€™ve got to figure out how to work with what theyā€™ve got real quick with the gauntlet of the next 6/7 games right ahead of us. Granted, we have a rookie center thatā€™s very talented but, heā€™s still a rookie. Heā€™s coming along fine but, it appears that the guard play to his right and left is not cutting it. Iā€™m not seeing the dog in Mauch & Bredeson and defenses are exploiting it. Obviously Goedekeā€™s back up Skule has no business being in there but if, the guard play was up to standard, I think weā€™d see much better results. Coen and his staff better figure it out or the losses will start piling up.

  8. Dave Pear Says:

As long as the Right Tackle is an incompetent cadaver, this is the way. There is outrage that Todd has not asked Jason to raid another team’s practice squad. No way this Drule is the best we can do. No. Way.

  9. BillyBucco Says:

If we get Goedeke back the whole O Line plays better because of confidence ALONE. I do think a change to Klein could help, but this staff will NEVER do it. They are too worried about feelings and stunting the growth of Mauch. Opeta was gonna be the starting LG for a reason. I thought we might be in the first year of a SB window, but now I realize we are still 2 drafts and some key FAs away.
    So disappointing.
This O Line is the worst Ive seen it in a decade.

  10. Harold Stone Says:

When will the Buccaneers stop šŸ›‘ being so pig head ..and stop šŸ›‘ blaming the offense line for someone who has shown that he canā€™t set up his lineman so they can get better angles for blockingā€¦ thatā€™s the mark of a good back .. and when the line does get a good block the running back run up the offensive lineman back.. STOP šŸ›‘ letting WHITE running the ball šŸˆ and start what the fans want to see and thatā€™s IRVING ..

  11. Gipper Says:

There can be no doubt that O line play has been bad. Both guards are underwhelming and having Geodke out has really hurt. Really disappointed that Cody Mauch has shown little improvement. Looks like Barton Graham will develop into a quality Center. Not sure what is wrong with Tristan Wirfs but he too looks way off this year. Need to find solutions fast.
