“I Feel Like When We Have Bad Practices, We Play Better.”

September 24th, 2024

“Interesting group, Lavonte.”

This is a fun one.

Most head coaches seek precision in practice and live by the rule, ‘You play how you practice.’ That’s not a line of thinking at One Buc Palace.

Joe’s not sure what it all means. Here’s what head coach Todd Bowles told SiriusXM NFL Radio yesterday.

“I feel like when we have bad practices, we play better,” Bowles said.

“… I thought we had some decent practices going forward [last week], and we didn’t play that way. So you just got to write it off as a bad loss and we gotta focus on next week.”

Bucs management likes to reference the lingering Tom Brady Effect since The Goat’s retirement. Is this a new development since Brady left?

Mike Evans told the Buccaneers Radio Network that he thought the Bucs had a great week of practice last week with excellent energy.

Joe understands that across sports at all levels, practice performance doesn’t always translate to the field, good and bad. But for Bowles put it out there as a Buccaneers pattern — bad practice trends toward playing well on Sundays — is certainly something to make Joe think over a steaming plate of Hooters Buffalo Shrimp arriving soon.

  1. BucU Says:

My confidence level in this team has tanked since last week.

  2. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Yeah, we don’t seem to have anyone who shows up 100% every week, every game, every play. I generally never have to be critical of a quarterback’s effort because they are pretty much the most competitive person on the team. That’s why they are an NFL QB. However, Mayfield’s preparation seemed to have been lacking this past week. On the other hand, he may have been just as surprised as we were (or more!) at the weakness of the offensive line. I expect him to bounce back this week with better prep and more awareness of his situation.

  3. Obvious Says:

We play better when we practice badly……. DESPERATELY DELUSIONAL

Buddy, you BETTER Snap into a slim Jim quick! We’ve heard this type of crap before from YOU and IT’S A BAD SIGN!

JASON LICHT, WHERE IS THE PASS RUSH????!!!!! WBERE IS THE O LNE????!!!!

    WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE DOING?

  4. BillyBucco Says:

When every O Lineman gives up a sack its not all on Baker. When we wanted to pass deeper, he was swarmed. This O Line sank us and thought no way does Denver pressure like Detroit. That’s ALL on Carberry.
I will say the interception by Baker was Rookie Bad. Bo Nix looked like the seasoned veteran because of protection.
This team is way worse than I thought. I also hate it when they say it’s too late now to make changes. You swing a trade for a capable RG or LG and it pays dividends by week 8. That is completely still within salvaging the season if this continues.

  5. pelbuc Says:

This screams lack of discipline and accountability. Bowles will be on the hot seat again very soon.

  6. Crickett Baker Says:

If I had a plateful of buffalo shrimp coming it may make me feel better, but it wouldn’t be by much. I could hardly finish watching this game.

  7. A Bucs Fan Says:

This is not good and it doesn’t make sense.

  8. Ed Says:

If I was Bowles I would ream my line coaches and have them practicing blocking and tackling all week. The beatdown the offensive line took and the missed tackles are alarming. They will be facing a wounded opponent whose top WR’s will probably not play. The Eagles have a BYE after next week, it would make no sense to push Smith after the cheap hit concussion against the dirty Saints and AJ Brown who hasn’t practiced due to a hamstring. Why would they not rest these guys, they are in a crappy division and as much as they want to beat the Bucs you don’t send Smith out there after he had his helmet knocked off and was unconscious on the SuperDome carpet or Brown who is their most important weapon. Its a simple as containing Hurts and Barkley and putting over 24 points up at home.

  9. Lakeland Says:

    How many starters actually practice?

  10. heyjude Says:

Sort of speechless about Coach saying when they practice badly they have a better game. I remember reading a post that Zyon said that they were all happy the entire week before the Broncos and they thought the Broncos would just roll the ball over to them. Happily practicing I guess. I really like Bowles and many other teams have their setbacks too. It’s the NFL. However, the Bucs really need the win this coming Sunday at home. They can do it too.

    Good question about starters, Lakeland!

  11. SlyPirate Says:

    WHAT I HAVEN’T HEARD …

I haven’t heard a coach or a player say, “It’s a home game. We need to win for our fans.”

Arians and TB12 used to say that all the time. “We win our home games.”

  12. Mark Says:

There are plenty of teams with worse talent than the Bucs that played competitive football Sunday. The Rams are missing half their offensive starters… the Packers their starting quarterback…the Giants are as talent-deprived a team as you could imagine. Even the damn Panthers won; who would trade their team for the Bucs?

If this is the high character team that Licht and company believe they have assembled, they will learn their lessons and rise to the occasion. If not, well, there is a reason the NFL stands for “not for long”. One more lame-ass, low-energy, brain-dead home start and the villagers will be at the gates with pitchforks and torches, fully justified in their cries for vengeance.

  13. Lakeland Says:

I have always said that Licht is wayyyy overrated as a GM.

  14. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

I’m just trying to figure out how you beat the team that technically is better than we were then, then the next week get humiliated by a team that is rebuilding and with a qb that people were questioning due to the 0&2 start. WTF is all I got to ask WTF.. Come On Guys cause look who’s next. Let’s Go Bucs. You Are Way Better Than Last Week’s Outing. Look what you had to go through in Detroit Four and a half sacks and a little help from the running game Baker. You are the leader here, get them on track baby.

  15. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

This was a deserved wakeup call. All the interviews and praises got the Bucs way too big headed. Back to earth now. Work hard. Stomp the Eagles. Give the home crowd something to cheer for. Go Bucs!!

  16. HC Grover Says:

This is worse than I thought.

  17. Permanently Moderated Says:

Imagine being able to suck at your job every couple of weeks and still get well paid for it.

  18. Pewter Power Says:

He needs to stop talking after a loss, this is what .500 looks like ladies and gentlemen. It’s doesn’t matter who the Bucs draft, the Bucs will be middle of the pack as long as he’s the head coach. Bucs don’t need sarcasm they need hard nosed coaching like BA gave them.

  19. Fred Says:

We lose 1 game and yall start to panic lol it doesn’t take much I see.

  20. JustVisiting Says:

If you’re a grown man and a professional athlete and you still need your coach to tell you to play hard, then you’ve got more problems than just the coach.

  21. Buc4evr Says:

Everyone knew the Oline and Dline didn’t have depth and was over relying on a few starters.

We just didn’t know how bad the backups were. They were exposed.

What adds to the problem is that the Bucs have starters like Mauch and Bredeson that are human turnstiles. The whole Oline including Wirfs was pathetic.

On the D line, a lot of guys were gassed. No pressure. I really don’t have anything good to say about players that loaf. The D line was on vacation.

    These clowns better wake up.

  22. Matt_PcAfee Says:

You can really tell on the first drive how these guys are going to play. A lot of slumped shoulders throughout the game…

  23. JA Says:

I can somewhat empathize, somewhat …
This is a golfing analogy. And if you think golf is a wuss sport, tell it to Koepka or Andy Bean who used to wrestle alligators.
Horrible on the driving range can lead to a great round of golf.
Kill it on the range, feeling good on the first tee, and you suck.
It makes no sense at all!

  24. JustVisiting Says:

Yeah, but in golf, if your technique is even a slight bit off, you got nothing. In football, you can still go hit someone!

  25. Buddha Says:

So much overreaction. Ridiculous. The Denver broncos wanted this game more than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That is the long and short of it. That is also the objective truth + you could have predicted it in advance, which I and many other gamblers did. The betting line moved from seven down to five. That is huge. The game was not fixed. It is simply that those who study the NFL knew this was a bad spot for the Buccaneers emotionally and a great spot for the broncos emotionally. So get over it. The meaning to draw from it is not that the Buccaneers are now a lousy team..

  26. unbelievable Says:

    JFC

    This team is so dysfunctional

  27. JA Says:

    Buddha——
    Where did you get 5?
I never saw anything less than 6.5, and that, considered a noteworthy jump, was 30 mins before kickoff.

  28. Dave Pear Says:

How about a list of new head coaching candidates, Jason Licht? Not to be shared with us, mind you. For your own workings.

  29. Defense Rules Says:

Not all that interested in how well guys PRACTICE; much more interested in how they PLAY on game day. That’s the only place where the wins & losses count.

Like Buc4evr said, we have no depth & the backups got exposed (that’s why they’re backups?). Games turn on big plays. Bucs made a number of those in Game 1 & a bunch in Game 2. We made excruciatingly few in Game 3. But look at who we were missing. Winfield … big play guy. Vea … always commands double teams, but STILL WINS. Goedeke … personally think he’s become the de facto leader of this defense & gives it ‘attitude’. I’d add Kancey to that list but I’m still unsure of the value of any player who can’t seem to stay healthy.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Unbelievable … ‘This team is so dysfunctional’.

Pretty much nailed it, BUT … we’re still 2-1 with a decent chance to go 3-1 IF we can get a couple of guys back (I’m thinking Vea & Goedeke).

Personally I think the Denver game will either be very good for us OR very bad for us in the long run. It SHOULD HAVE showed these guys that they’re not really all THAT talented, and the only way they’ll win is to fight like he11. Every play counts, from the first to the last. We’ve wasted far too many plays, in all 3 games (but particularly in the Denver game). Time for these guys to put on their big boy pants & kick a$$.

  31. Larrd Says:

Maybe they get chewed out all week with bad practices, coddled with good.

Chew them out all week regardless, maybe.

  32. Leopold Stotch Says:

This is the kind of crap where I say to myself “why did I get fooled into thinking Bowles would be good?”. Winning really is a perfume. It’s flabbergasting how much of a seesaw this team is on.

  33. SenileSenior Says:

Gms don’t coach nor do they play in any games.

I have noticed that the Bucs tend to play better on some of the weeks when Bowles said that they did not practice well. Was he being ironic? Or was he trying to say something to the team?

Go Bucs! Take down the Eagles!

  34. SenileSenior Says:

Reread what Defense Rules said. If we are 3-1 after this weekend what will JBFers be saying? Youth wants to know.

  35. Buddha Says:

JA, Fan Duel closed at 5.5 and the consensus closing line was 6. I meant to quote 5.5. This was one of 6 games I posted as picks on Friday on this board. Five were winners including Carolina and NY Giants.

  36. Dave Pear Says:

A team that is dysfunctional is a reflection of the head coach.

Beat the Eagles Sunday and I’ll accept this Broncos dungheap was a glitch.

Lose like that again, Todd will be operating a tractor dealership come February 2025.

  37. Scotty Mack Says:

Both hosts of the show agreed with Bowles, saying that was also the case with teams they played on/coached.

  38. Dave Pear Says:

    Yep.

The Denver game could be very good for us or very bad for us. Or it could be neither. Or both.

That probably covers all the bases.

  39. BucFanforLife Says:

I stand with Bowles. We’re competitive as a team overall, and he’s genuine. He’ll figure out the details and get our ship sailing again. The only thing I want to see changed is for us to have Bucky in the game full time; Rashad sucks.. don’t care if he can catch balls, he’s supposed to be a RB. No one is scared of us running and setting up the play action when White is back there.
