Deep Shots Disappeared

September 22nd, 2024

So superstar Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain appeared to take Mike Evans out of the game. Joe gets it.

But where were the deep shots to other Bucs recievers? Anyone remember the Bucs’ opening drive against the Lions?

Tampa Bay launched a 50-yard bomb to Trey Palmer, who picked up a pass interference flag. Deep shots can be valuable in so many ways, even when they’re unsuccessful.

Joe has to rewatch today’s groin-stomp loss to Denver, but Joe doesn’t remember the Bucs taking a deep shot all game. Why? That’s a tough pill to swallow when you have talented receivers and a big-armed quarterback.

And Joe thought the Bucs were going to make more of an effort to put the ball in Trey Palmer’s hands this season to give him a chance to use his elite wheels. Palmer has 1 catch on 3 targets through three games, plus the pass interference draw Joe referenced.

Keep in mind Palmer caught 39 balls last season and was a factor in the playoffs.

Joe gets that the Broncos brought blitz after blitz, which makes it harder to throw deep. But make some darn adjustments take a few shots. This was a game to do it.

There was plenty of deep shots. Our guys literally got bent over the barrel and many deep shots got sent.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Baker was trash today. It’s that simple.

When Bad Baker shows up, which happens like 6 times a season (not to be confused with his middling games which is about 6-8 times a season), this is the result.

When Baker comes out and Checkdown Charlie’s it on the opening drive, you know it’s going to be a bad day.

  3. Tye Says:

The defense was checked out much like their DC/HC!…
Bowels is barely average as a HC for a reason….

  4. WiseCrack Says:

Its not like Baker didnt have time so lets just not say that.

I saw Mike open at least twice on replays when Baker was doing his happy dance in the pocket trying to get sacked or make a dazzling play for his fan club.

Personally would rather JW back if that is what we are gonna do. I would really love to see what he would have done without a HISTORICLLY BAD defense.

Our guard play is poor. Was hopeful for Mauch but am ready to see what Klein can do. This isn’t getting better. Expected more from the D line too but at least we know that will get better with Vea and Kancey. If the guard play doesn’t improve, it’s going to be the Baler scramble for your life movie again

  6. Steve Jackson Says:

I don’t remember seeing a single screen today. They were bull rushing 5 and 6 and never a single screen. Did I miss something?

  7. rrsrqnc Says:

I’m thinking the same thing, as much as I like the short pass to Godwin, he is not going to house, but Palmer could anytime he touches the ball

  8. EssexBuccaneer Says:

We shouldn’t harp on about JW because he’s thankfully long gone, but part of the reason for that HISTORICALLY BAD defense was JW’s penchant for throwing interceptions in his own half and giving up ridiculously short fields.

Only thing worse enduring than being a Buc fan today is dem cowgurls fans

  10. John J Barse Says:

it wasn’t Baker, 7 sacks that’s the issue. last week also. blocking is not as good as advertised. On another note, when do we get the point that Bucky should be the starter? Plus, we have no pass rush at all….don’t tell me about pressures. sacks are not getting there. The draft picks we have used for these so-called pass rushers have not worked out. Coaching???? maybe

  11. WiseCrack Says:

Another example of folks not understanding what they are seeing. Or evidence of the effect of the 2020 shot heard around the world. OR… !!! @EssexBuccaneer

The reason Winston is relevant is because the very reason you just gave for him being bad is what we saw today. But this time it is not the QBs fault its the Ds fault.

    Go figure

I posted this in the other Mayfield thread and I’ll post it here…

    MAYFIELD WAS TERRIBLE TODAY.

    *MY THEORY*…

Mayfield is struggling to pass over the middle. In fact, it looks like he has very little vision over the middle. He’s looking and throwing it outside or to a checkdown, or he’s scrambling to get out of the pocket.

My theory is that his HEIGHT is causing some problems.

Graham Barton is about 6’5.5″. Hainsey is 6’4″. So Mayfield now has a center that’s even taller and harder for him to see over. Mauch is 6’6″ and Skule is 6’6″ (inch taller than Goedeke). That’s his strong side view straight ahead and to the right.

I think Mayfield can’t see very well over the O-Line. So he often holds the ball too long waiting for some space in the line to see downfield. But that’s often too late on routes as well as when the pocket is starting to collapse.

  13. Trask To The Future Says:

John J Barse – most of the sacks didn’t happen until the 2nd half when we were down multiple scores. Payton is smart and started blitzing a lot knowing Mayfield would have to throw on almost every down to try and catch up on the scoreboard.

Sacks are not why Mayfield stunk so bad today. He just stunk. His accuracy was off, he held the ball too long, and he had some bad decision making.

  14. unbelievable Says:

Some of those 7 sacks were on Baker. Not all of them, but probably 2 or 3

The whole team sucked out loud today. Offense, defense, special teams, coaching.

  15. unbelievable Says:

They were sending extra rushers all game long dummy.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

A cadaver overseeing a turnstile at RT makes it hard to have the time to throw deep. Todd l’s expert head coaching on full display today. He’s getting ready to build apartment complexes in Ft Meyers.

  17. Bucfan Says:

Sure am glad I dropped my season tickets. Much rather watch a lousy game on tv in A/C.

  18. Falconrap Says:

When the pocket starts to collapse or gets pushed up into the middle some, he tends to drop his eyes from downfield and looks for something close or starts freaking out and tries to play superman running around like a chicken. He is what he is, but a lot of you love him…so there’s that.

  19. Esteban85 Says:

No time for Baker to throw at all. Offensive line should be ashamed of their performance. Yes there were a lot of blitzes but we should’ve had a semblance of a screen game to alleviate that pressure then toss it deep to Mike or anyone would’ve been nice. Just a thought. Not sold on Cohen yet but he has some nice plays in there.

  20. Les Says:

Were were the screen plays when the blitz came ? We have a deep receiver room .were were are other wide outs . Why are we playing 10 yards off in our secondary . So many questions ! Bowles never changes at the half . The play calls sucked to .he looks like a rookie play caller . 3 times we only needed 2 or 3 yards for a first down . And he calls 30 yards passes .wtf is that ? Funk and funk if you have to .get the ball out quick .we’re are the quick poppers the slant passes ? Awful preparation by today bowles .

  21. unbelievable Says:

@Les I asked that question about 20 times today.

So far I’m unimpressed with Coens ability to scheme against pressure.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

    Coaching .

    And, not.

  23. Chad Says:

2 sacks were bakers fault, and wise crack on the replays showing Mike Evans, the o-line had already broke down and baker was already having to run out of the pocket. Announcers themselves said coverage was really good down field. The thing is, if your o-line is getting man handled, Tristan wirfs included in that then your qb ain’t gonna have time to get the ball down field. They will bounce back and have a better game plan for the eagles
