Sacks Are Drive Killers

September 22nd, 2024

Pass rush blues.

Sacks just destroy drives. If you somehow don’t believe that, you only needed to watch the Bucs lose to the Broncos 26-7 today.

The data for the past five seasons is overwhelming. Get a sack and the odds of an offense putting seven on the board, much less three, goes way, way, way down.

Most teams know this. Apparently, the Bucs don’t because they simply haven’t prioritized an edge rush in the post-Jason Pierre-Paul era. If they did prioritize it, the Bucs would have a pass rush. If the Bucs did prioritize sacks, they wouldn’t have had zero today against a rookie quarterback. Friggin’ ZERO!!!

Don’t get Joe started on pressures.

Early in the second half, the Bucs had two chances right off the bat to make the game a one-score game. It was 20-7 Broncos at the time.

The Bucs had a promising drive started to begin the third quarter but Baker Mayfield got sacked. A punt soon followed.

The same thing happened the next Bucs drive. It started off promising, with Bucky Irving showing why he needs more carries. Then, Mayfield was sacked again.

Punt team, get ready!

Over the weekend, former Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Chucky pumped out another video from his “Gruden Loves Football” YouTube account. There, he said, “You can’t win a championship without a fourth-quarter pass rush.”

Chucky isn’t wrong. But when it comes to the Bucs, any quarter would do.

The entire organization should be embarrassed and apologize to Team Glazer for not prioritizing this very critical element of good defenses.

    Sack-O-Matic

Bucs gave up 7 sacks today.

  3. Lakeland Says:

The Bucs had 3rd and 2 from the Broncos 45. They went for the 2 yards on 3rd and 4th down. They threw passes both downs, both to Chris Godwin, and they didn’t make it. This games wasn’t just about the sacks. They stunk the field in every possible way.

7 sacks given up today? I have to ask: did our new tackle, Skule, get beaten as badly as Detroit did him?

What a debacle the entire game

No, it was a team effort. I’d have to see the final count, but I’m sure I saw at least Sucke giving up 2 sacks, but those are only the ones I saw, I’m sure he gave up more than that. But last week was literally the worst gamve I’ve ever seen by an offensive lineman, so being that bad, two weeks in a row, would be truly special. If he was 0 out of 10 last week, he was probably a 2 out of 10 this week.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Oh, and it’s worth noting, Baker was holding the ball forever after he threw the early INT. Like he does, he completely lost confidence, and while the blocking wasn’t good by any means, it wasn’t helped by Baker holding the ball, then looking short instead of taking shots.

Bowls needs to stop smiling and wake tf up

Cadavers at Right Tackle are team killers.

  10. Wild Bill Says:

Old fashion ass kicking the whole game. We’re the Bucs properly prepared? Did not look like it. Did the coaches remind the team to forget last week’s huge win? Did the coaches and players go into this game waaaay over confident? Yes and yes. They got their ass kicked back to reality. If they got balls they will be fierce next game.

  11. Leopold Stotch Says:

While I don’t think Reddick is the guy, we definitely need a veteran guy in here. Yaya is all hy himself. We know who JTS9 is, Braswell is a rookie. Nelson is a rotation guy, Watts and Ramirez are unknowns. Get those 2 guys in to spice it up or something. We need a pass rush, We’re not getting sacks at all. Bowles used to get sacks from Dline, LBs, Corners and Safetys. I don’t see any of that at all.

  12. unbelievable Says:

Agree Rod Baker was holding the ball Waaaaaasy too long today way too many times. He thought he could escape each time like he did against Washington, but he couldn’t.

It was just a collective failure by every single person in the Bucs org today, from the coaches to the player. With the exception of Bucky.

  13. Saskbucs Says:

Baker saw no one open you guys. Listen Baker sucked today. He made poor decisions constantly. I’m not absolving him of blame… but it was clear from the jump the Bucs were lifeless. Without Coen scheming something open, the Bucs were getting no separation. Then they became predictable. 2nd or 3rd and long they kept wanting to take shots but Denver sent heat and the OL was brutal.

Taking all that into account… even if Baker was on … what was he supposed to do? Skule backing into his lap. Guards not picking guys up. WRs locked down. White tap dancing. Mahomes was gonna have a rough day with that supporting crew vs a team that wanted it much more.

There is no 1 guy to blame today. There’s like 56 including coaches and letting Irving off the hook. He wanted it. Too bad no one else did.

  14. Saskbucs Says:

Seriously though… when you watch the tape… what was Skule doing? I don’t recall ever seeing that. He was creating like 4 yards between him and the edge rusher while closing himself on Baker. It was crazy.

  15. Jerseybuc Says:

GO GET REDDICK!!! Or these guys can’t buy a sack

  16. Dave Pear Says:

If Skule had a brain, he’d take it out and play with it, then microwave it and feed it to the squirrels.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Mayfield’s been the victim of 13 sacks in just the first 3 games. That’s on pace for 74 sacks in the regular season. Anyone think that we’ll win the NFC South if our starting QB takes 74 sacks. Anyone?

Some folks talk about 1 side of the OLine being worse than the other, but from what I’ve seen our entire OLine is getting their butts handed to them. The run blocking is horrendous, and the pass blocking isn’t any better. If I was the HC, I’d be having some serious conversations with my OC and OLine coach.

  18. matthew a veal Says:

the defense really did well enough to win. take away a couple of missed tackles, the intterception, and were under 20. thats the number warren sapp used to say.

were missing 3 top players on defense. this isnt the time to go after the defense.

iour offense only lacked one starter, and he is not an all pro at the moment. once they show how to beat you like today, you have to fix the ptoblem or youll keep seeing it.

we faced a defense that gave up 70 a year ago. the coaches have to come up with some answers it lloked like a day bucy irving could have turned the game areound if given a chance, but what do i know…

You can put at least 6 of those on one guy, Sucke, who has only played in 2 games.

Get Luke in there, and cut that garbage player, and suddenly things will look better. They still have issues with learning the scheme, but I think we’re going to see a dramatic improvement the second Sucke is shown the unemployment line.

  21. BucsfaninOregon Says:

I agree with Mr. Munch except…THEY DON’T have anybody better!

  22. White Tiger Says:

Well, it’s one thing to NOT get a sack – it’s another to give up 7 of them.

Hard to win a game when the QB no longer trusts the o-line.
