New Baker Mayfield Territory For Liam Coen

September 19th, 2024

A telling point was made by the Bucs’ new offensive coordinator this week, one that illustrates how the NFL has changed.

Liam Coen noted how the tremendous escapability, running and off-script play by Baker Mayfield this season is new to the Bucs’ playcaller. He told the Buccaneers Radio Network he learned what he was dealing with in Week 1.

Why? Because the Bucs don’t play real football in spring or summer practice, and Mayfield had single-digit snaps in the 2024 preseason.

“Well, the quarterback’s not live,” Coen said of training camp and spring practice.

Joe realizes Mayfield played five games under Coen with the Rams in 2023, but Mayfield only ran for 37 yards through those five games and that was a unique situation. Mayfield was learning the offense in real-time without the benefit of training camp and offseason practice.

Now, Mayfield is comfortable, in better shape and Coen is finally understanding the whole Mayfield package.

Coen still learning so much about his quarterback can only be a good thing for the Bucs’ prospects for improving through this season.

We will definitely be more dangerous this year in multiple facets on offense this year, and having a QB threat to run the ball only makes our offense more explosive. I’m liking what I’ve seen to start this season, however I want to see it continue later this season when they get tired and beat up.

An “escapable” QB puts a LOT of pressure on the D, especially on LBs.

Hopefully we can keep Coen more than 1 year lol. Bowles is proving to be an OC finding savant or something lately.

    I am starting to believe.

now, if they would just get the bucs games on primetime more often!!!

I hope Coen sticks around for the next few years.

Kinda getting the vibes of a recent successful franchise that had a good GM a Defensive mastermind as Head Coach, an Up-and-Coming Mastermind at OC, and a QB that felt disrespected, so he took it out on the league.

Anyone else getting New Orleans Saints vibes? Yeah, me either, F the Saints and all of them cheating, thieving criminals.

How many guys lost years to their careers like CG because of them sorry MFers. Hope they remind them how sorry they are via Denver this week.

TY Patriots for the play book!

Bakers wheels are definitely better than last year, the scramble before the QB draw TD, he looked like an actual runner with moves and speed. No, we don’t want to see that unless absolutely necessary, but good he has it in the arsenal and opposing teams will have to start accounting for it.

That’s a point I’ve been making for years about new coaches. Most people focus on the players and knowing systems and overwrought things like that. It takes a while for coaches to learn exactly what his new guys are going to do in a game and how to coach for that. It’s easier to spot in an underperformer that a coach was planning to rely on, e.g. Neal last year.

WiseCrack, you can bet CG14, a total pro, has been commenting on his blown knee c/o Sean Payton’s orders to the Aints. He’s human and his fellow Bucs are listening. I wonder if the Denver brass has Payton on a tight lease with that nonsense? The Broncos are not known for dirty play. Bowles and Licht will keep a lid on it which is expected. Bucs have enough headaches with the refs. Best revenge is a wipeout as in shutout next Sunday. Just win this game, Bucs. And watch your knees.

It’s all fun right now, but I’m feeling the offensive line is suspect. Baker shouldn’t b running for his life on every other play. He is liable to get hurt. I don’t think the defense is up to speed either.
