Baker Mayfield Among Most Accurate

September 19th, 2024

Accuracy.

Have we stumbled upon why Baker Mayfield is off to such a strong season?

Mayfield leads the NFL in touchdowns (5) and explosive pass plays (14). That could be why.

Joe always hears about how accuracy is the best trait of a quarterback. It’s cool if a guy can throw 70 yards downfield (hello Anthony Richardson) and it’s cool if a quarterback is a runaround quarterback (hello Kyler Murray) but it’s more important what a quarterback can do in the pocket when the team needs a first down.

It seems Mayfield is off to a helluva season in that regard.

Over at Pro-Football-Reference.com, which is sort of the NFL’s encyclopedia, its advanced stats section shows Mayfield to be the fifth-most accurate passer in the NFL through two games. So, 83.7 of Mayfield’s passes are on target.

As for “poor throws,” (throws that are off target) Mayfield’s rate is 12.2 percent, just a hair more than Pat Mahomes.

So if accuracy really is the key to a good quarterback, then Joe believes Mayfield’s accuracy has allowed him to have such a good start to the 2024 season.

Maybe Baker is the reason the run game sucks?

  2. Mike Says:

    How so wisecrack?

  3. Jeagan1999 Says:

    Let’s BAKE, people!!!

  4. BakerFan Says:

Middling right Azzhats??? You guys are pathetic, scurry away like cockroaches just waiting for Mayfield to have a bad game so you can show up again screaming middling.

  5. Dave Pear Says:

Waiting for the mental mudflap to assert how #2 would be doing better. If #2 played in that Lions game he would’ve been carted off on a slab in the first quarter.

  6. Lol Says:

Baker has definitely improved while here in Tampa. He was picked up off the trash heap because he was not a great qb prior to his releases & trade and his ceiling didnt seem to be that high. The way Baker has turned it around has been fun to watch. Going into last year I was worried that a middling QB would just put the Bucs in QB purgatory for years due to the fact that Mayfield was good enough to win some games but also bad enough to lose others. But Bake has shown consistently that he can make good choices and I am now happy to have him as a qb. I doubted that the Bucs could ever compete for a SB with Todd Bowles and Baker Mayfield, but both of these guys have proven to me that in fact the Bucs are contenders with them.

    I’ve said it already.
Mayfield is probably the best QB in the NFL.

How many of the other QBs could win with the absolute worst Rushing attack and TE production?

Take away Mahommes TE and Rbs. Josh Allen? Jordan Love?

The only weapons Mayfied has, is our WRs.
Yet he won the division last year, and is looking outstanding this year.

    It’s unprecedented. It’s practically a Miracle.
Defensive coach know that our Running game and TEs are no threat.
Only gotta watch Mayfield, and defend against our WRs.

    Yet we still beat them.
    It’s mind boggling.

The numbers will dip a bit as the schedule toughens, and defenses begin to get a read on Coen. Even so, like Sam Darnold, it’s amazing what a talented guy can do with solid coaching and weapons. last years naysayers on baker on thought his ability was represented by his numbers put out during his Carolina tenure, combined with the year he played hurt in Cleveland. The talent was always there .Amazing to think baker, darnold, mc cafferty, and dj moore were all on the same offense in the dumpster fire that was Carolina.

True…. Most QB’s in the league would have been toast. Even TB12 would have gotten his azz smashed. Was a pretty amazing performance in nearly every way by Baker.

Scary thing, though they may not know it yet, is he’s still getting better. He’s better at escaping, remaining calm under pressure – eyes down field.

A confident Baker, with weapons, a stable franchise, and competent coaching should be scaring people but I’m glad people are STILL doubting and underestimating him.

  10. Dave Pear Says:

GoneGator, yeah buddy. Agreed. Of course a vital component to success is a competent backup right tackle and decent O-line play, as you’ve said well before.

Baker is doing a great job. Looking at the complete table he is far better than many others.

  12. SlyPirate Says:

    Craziest MVP Race EVER!!!

    1. Carr
    2. Mayfield
    3. Darnold

  13. Esteban85 Says:

I like Bakers elusiveness and how he’s always looking downfield while he’s dodging 300+ pound boulders coming at him. He’s a sneaky SOB and he’s showing the world why he was a #1 pick overall. He obviously is feeling comfortable down in Tampa. Cheers to Licht for the best move he’s made since Brady!

  14. Pickgrin Says:

    Accuracy is important….

But making good decisions under fire – consistently – is the key to being a good/great QB in the NFL…..

Baker seems to have found his lane in that respect – and is playing well and comfortably within the range of his own strengths and limitations.

Feelings of appreciation and respect from co-workers and the community – the sense of finally finding a professional “home” – a new baby…. these happy circumstances are helping Mayfield be the best Baker he can be.

Hopefully this bet the Bucs have placed on Mayfield’s ceiling winds up turning into a fairytale ending with red and pewter colored confetti raining down on a professional football field in February…

  15. Kenton Smith Says:

He’s simply a middling journeyman who is lucky to have good players to check down 5 – 10 yard swing passes. He’s horrible anywhere past 10 yards and since he’s the worlds only six ft. 1 inch midget he’s lucky to not have every pass batted back right down his throat. Respectfully , Rod ( middling) Munchkin

  16. Gipper Says:

    Lol,

You don’t know what you are talking about. Just a bunch of words thrown together to be a pretend analyst. Mayfield set the rookie NFL QB record for TD passes with Cleveland in 2018 while playing in only 13 games. In his third year he led the Browns to a playoff win over the Steelers. He was the toast of Cleveland and was easily the best thing that happened to the Browns since their reemergence in 1999. Mayfield’s mistake with Cleveland was trying to play the 2021 season with a serious shoulder injury. For that he was banished to Carolina which as we know is a graveyard for professional football players. Just ask Bryce Young if you are in doubt. Mayfield’s first six years in the NFL are almost identical to Drew Brees. Mayfield will surpass Brees statistically by the time he is done. Since Brees is headed to the HOF, that is pretty good company to keep.

  17. Don'tBmad Says:

Lazy ignorant Mayfield takes…mostly from people who never sniffed a football field.

  18. BakerBucs says duh Says:

Only 3 negative post bout baker this is drastic improvement on this site can’t wait til there r zero negative post but munchkin will never change his bs attitude

  19. Kenton Smith Says:

I like to give it back to Rod Munch when I can but this sight wouldn’t be nearly as good without him. He reminds me of my kid brother. Funniest guy I know. Now his humor has no boundaries regarding other people’s feelings. But for a soul cleansing side splitting laugh for an intelligent audience – it’s real. Since Rod is too busy to show up for practice tonight I guess I’ll have to call Stevie.

  20. BuccaDAWG Says:

Shake & BAKER #44 on Detroit is still crawling.around on broke ankles looking for his jock. The NFL talking heads are finally fusing up that the BUCS are a pretty good Team with player talent especially at Qb. Baker loves it here in Tampa Bay , he’s getting respect & he’s the perfect Qb for this team & the TAMPA BAY BUCCANATION. Ball on Baker , your teammates will follow you thru a mine field ##!!!

  21. Lol Says:

    Gipper

I have been watching the NFL for 30+ Years. I know what I am talking about as far as my fandom and perception of the league as a whole, because it is my opinion. I am a commenter on a fan site just giving my opinion. LOL. Perception is reality dude. You’re analysis seems to stem from a place of authority as if you are an analyst yourself, or maybe Bakers agent?

Then you drop an outstandingly stupid remark that Baker will have better stats than Drew Brees by the time he is done. LOL. WTF. HAHAHAHAHAHAH. You are so full of it my man.

You think Baker Mayfield is a top 8 qb of all time. HAHAHAHAHA. What a tool.

I am starting to actually like Baker, because he is finally making good decisions consistently. Something that doomed him in his early career and what got him launched from Cleveland. Also why he went through 4 teams in a couple years. The Bucs picked him up off the trash heap because he was not a great qb…. That is starting to change

    Go Bucs!

  22. Gipper Says:

    Lol,

Watching football with a beer in your hand doesn’t make you an analyst. Here is what I said this time I will go slowly for you: ” Mayfield statistically for his first 6 years in the NFL is almost identical to Brees first 6 years statistically.” Moreover, I went on to say that in my opinion Mayfield will eclipse Brees career totals.” The latter part of my statement is a projection. You don’t have to agree with it. We are all relieved that an “analyst” like yourself, based on your 30 years of watching TV, is warming up to Mayfield. Go have another beer. I never said that Mayfield was a top 8 QB of all time. Mayfield is just now hitting his professional stride. Can’t assess his career until it is complete. I do think Mayfield is destined like Brees for a HOF career.
