Huge Challenge Ahead For Mike Evans

September 18th, 2024

So Joe soaked in yesterday’s long interview with Lions superstar receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

It was on the The Richard Sherman Podcast. Joe thought there might be good feedback on the Lions losing to the Bucs, but no, none of that. However, St. Brown was asked to name the toughest cornerback to face in the NFL.

St. Brown didn’t hesitate. He said it’s Patrick Surtain II of the Broncos, the guy expected to shadow Mike Evans on Sunday in Tampa at The Licht House.

Yeah, Surtain is that good. The 2022 All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler is the total package, and he’s long at 6-2 with a big vertical leap.

Some might say he’s a bigger version of his dad, who also was an All-Pro cornerback.

Joe watched both Broncos games today (condensed) to get a look at their rookie quarterback Bo Nix. What a mess.

The winless Broncos don’t have much around Nix and he’s not throwing deep. Nix is still looking for his first touchdown throw of the season against four interceptions.

The Broncos’ defense has been keeping the team in games and a lot of that revolves around Surtain locking down stud receivers like Evans.

Unlike against the Lions, Joe expects Evans to get a healthy share of man coverage on Sunday.

Will the Bucs look exploit Evans in 1-on-1 and feel he has an advantage? Will Evans prove he chan hang with a 24-year-old cornerback in his prime, one he’s never faced?

Joe looks forward to the matchup, but Joe also looks forward to the Bucs beating the Broncos with their other weapons — and more than just a one-man show from Chris Godwin like the Bucs got on Sunday.

  1. Dave Pear Says:

Bake obviously isn’t trying to force to Mike, witness Chris.

I’m not worried about Mike. I’m worried about what the hell is happening at RT, why isn’t the Druler unemployed and why haven’t we found a less immobile corpse to at least get in the way.

  2. SB Says:

Might be McMillan’s time this weekend. Was Mikes, then Chris’, why not?

  3. White Dogg Says:

I agree SB, time to show the rest of the NFL our 3 headed attack
(Sprinkle some love for Otten in there, with some screens to white and we should be fine)

    Bucs defense 3 sacks, 1 fumble & 2 picks – final score 27-16 bucs

  4. J Says:

All we need to do is keep the pressure on Nix. He crumbles under pressure right now. I don’t know if he’ll be a good QB tbh, but we want him to roll out and throw, often. This game is set up for our DBs to shine.

  5. ModHairKen … Says:

I think Surtain is the one who should be worried.

  6. Delusional Intelligence Says:

    Agree with Ken,

    Let’s change the heading to

Huge Challenge Ahead For Patrick Surtain II

  7. SenileSenior Says:

Mike has faced the best many teams had over many years. He has learned something!

    Go Mike! Go Bucs!

  8. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

McMillan hasn’t really shown that he can shine in the spotlight of the NFL yet.

He looks a little overwhelmed out there so far and looks like he’s trying too hard to Love up to the hype.

But hopefully he settles in and has a breakout soon because we need him to live up to the hype.

I believe he can and will, but he still needs to show it.

  9. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

    *live up to the hype

  10. GoneGator Says:

    @Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com

I agree BUT he’s got 2 consummate pro’s to help him settle in. If he can avoid mistakes and just catch whats thrown to him he’ll gain more of Baker and Coen’s trust and improve.

Surtain is going to be a challenge for Mike I’m sure but if they guard him 1 on 1 we’re going to take some shots. Mike will get at least 1 touchdown, Baker will make sure of that.

  11. Kenton Smith Says:

If Mike doesn’t draw double coverage then Baker will throw him the ball. I know Baker and Liam are on the same page with that. But what I’d really like to see is about 7 or 8 guys getting receptions this week. And the running game show out a little. And the defense to pitch a shutout. I think this game is a trap game though. Hope we’re prepared this team we’re playing is desperate for a win.

  12. Stanglassman Says:

I think this is going to be a breakout week for Bucky and Jalen. The Bucs will get their running game going and when they stack the box and bracket Evans the #3 rookie WR will get going.

  14. adam from ny Says:

i am surtain that mike evans will do just fine on sunday 🙂

  15. adam from ny Says:

godwin will surtainly do well too

  16. adam from ny Says:

i am not so surtain about mr. otton tho……………..lol

  17. Beeej Says:

Outside of He who shall not be Named from the Saints, nobody covers ME13 one-on-one

  18. BillyBucco Says:

Surtain had about 3 pass interference calls last week against Pickens and at least 1 against Metcalf. He is good for at least 1 against Mike.
They can’t cover all 3 and have some safety injuries.
I would like to see Bucky out touch White in carries. With White being banged up this shouldn’t be rocket science. 5.2 ypc against 2.0 for White. DUH!!!!
Denver is truly the 2nd worst team in the NFL.

  19. heyjude Says:

Good for St. Brown telling it like it is. Mike Evans is the heart and soul of the Bucs. Yes, Surtain probably will be all over Mike this coming Sunday. But again, we have Godwin, McMillan, Bucky… Bucs have this.

  20. Beeej Says:

Evans in single coverage is like a Madden cheat code

  21. dbbuc711 Says:

Hope that Mike has a monster day and adds to his legend

  22. SlyPirate Says:

They’ve played 2 games. Let’s not make too big of assumptions just yet.

  23. Oxycondomns Says:

how many yards did pickens and metcalf get against surtain? hes legit hes shutting down whoever hes on . hes the highest paid cb for a reason. mike doesnt have to have a big game for bucs to win

  24. Oxycondomns Says:

    maybe a bucky breakout game?

  25. Carl Leonard Says:

St Brown? Who is that? Lol . 1 good year and he got paid… on a overated football team that is favored to beat us by 8.5 ? Really ? 8.5? That’s a disgrace …Jarod Goff Is a average QB. And they’ll get beat this week too…That NFC north looks to really have one good team this year ..Minnesota. St. Brown says??? Who cares? Mike Evans is Consistent every game, and then he will go off with a 200 yard recieving 2 or 3 T.D performance …Certain can cover him but can he stop him ? Will he win if Mayfield puts it out there for Mike ? No he won’t. Mike Evans is gonna break out this weekend ..he gonna go over 100 and he gonna find pay dirt.. or ge can blanket him all 60 min and we have ALOT OF GOOD PLAYERS THAT WILL.. and that’s that…I don’t thnk certain can wina 1 on 1 with Mike Evans … that’s why all teams shade extra coverage his way… he will still fund a way…and I think he has better games against better corners anyway…Certain is good but he’s not as good at his position as Mike Evans is at his…when St. Brown doin it for as long as Mike and he wont…then we can ask him.. Mike Evans can beat any corner in the league 1 on 1.. but I think he tends to have Better games against marquis corners…anyway he goin off this week for sure ..125. 2 TD. Bucs are looking great…wait til we get healthy…ITS A GOOD TIME TO BE A BUC FAN. LETS NOT GET CAUGHT UP IN THESE ARTICLES AND THE POWER RANKINGS …THE BRONCOS ARE IN SHAMBLES . AND THAT SLIMY SEAN PAYTON WILL BE UNEMLLYED IN 3 OR 4 WEEKS ANYWAY.. IM PROUD OF MY BUCS THEY WIN BIG THIS WEEK …GO BUCS..

  26. Buccup Says:

Thank goodness for Godwin! Glad the Bucs have him!

The Bucs have lots of weapons….right tackle ain’t one of ’em right now. Gads! Hope that gets shored up in a hurry! That was embarrassing!

I also hope that the Bucs don’t follow their pattern of allowing no-names and rookies shine and create a name for themselves.
