Yes, coaches just want to win, but they also know the ball must be spread around to keep offensive players happy, motivated and improving.
Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen told a cool story on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week. He explained that after the thrilling win Sunday against the Lions, he reached out to the Bucs’ No. 1 tight end to apologize.
Cade Otton has 1 yard receiving through two games.
Man, Coen sounded so dejected, genuinely sad that he hasn’t got his top tight end more involved.
The Bucs’ playcaller said he felt a little better after getting a reply text from Otton, which Coen implied was the kind response a true team-first player would send.
Speaking this afternoon, Baker Mayfield was asked about getting Otton catches.
“I mean, Cade’s a guy, obviously you saw last year how reliable he is,” Mayfield said.
“… People kind of forget about the talent level that he really has — pure hands and just understanding some of these zone concepts, where the holes in the defenses are, how to get there and, yeah, love Cade. … The defense dicates where the ball’s going to go, and sometimes it will be Cade.”
Mayfield’s right. Let the defense dictate. Otton is not a diva and he’s certainly is not good enough to be the kind of guy to demand the rock.
The Bucs have those guys in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin — and that’s not a negative. They should command and expect their share of touches. It’s also a “business component” that cannot be ignored.

From a rewatch, if the defender doesn’t make a great play, Otten has six points on Sunday. Perfectly placed pass heading right to his hands, but the defender knocks it away.

What happened to Mike Evans against Detroit? I only saw highlights of the game and he wasn’t mentioned.

If he getss better blocking, then you can have a long term TE with Otton, I really like him a lot……….Seems also a great teammate

On the deflected pass that would have been an Otten TD , I was wondering, it didn’t seem like there was any defense to Otten’s left. Maybe there was, but it sure looked like if he had taken off for the back left corner of the endzone, Bake could have lofted one to him.

It feels like he’s going to have a breakout game against a good defense that over extends to Evans and Godwin.
I would love to see Palmer And McMillan have a few more targets per game but, like Joe said, you have to do what the defense dictates. And step one is blocking

Maybe he could take pride in chipping on Hutchinson and not allowing sacks? Man still don’t get why they carry 4 TE’s

I’d be okay with, if everything keeps going well, the Bucs trading for a Tight End near the deadline.

The Bucs had 19 pass plays. Everyone is not getting fed, not enough balls to go around.

@1SparkyBuc… I only watched the condensed version (pretty upset I wasn’t able to watch it live earlier in the day) … seemed to me they were taking Evans away early and Godwin was the beneficiary. Then the passing plan had to change cause Hutchinson already had 4 sacks and Baker was under duress. Tight game, Bucs got more conservative and had to rely on the D. Baker didn’t throw many passes in the 2nd half.

Otten is another team first guy. We have an entire team of quality players and people. Very tight group. I’ll give props to Licht and Bowles for that. If we could just field a semi healthy team at some point we can go places.

I would cut a TE and add an OL. I don’t even know who is 3 or 4 in ranking. That is mainly my lack of knowledge, but also there are few successful plays from this group. If there is a stud TE next draft our #2 should go to him. Look at good teams (ex. 49rs/ KC) and they have a real TE.

Who cares other than bores who quote box scores.
In week 1, they didn’t need him, and Baker isn’t putting up 400 yards a game, so there’s only so many yards to go around (not an insult vs Baker, just not the style of this offense).
In week 2, the RT tackle play was so incredibly bad, it completely blew up the offense. The question, is, why wasn’t Otton in on every single play helping to block? Maybe you could do a TE screen if you were determined to get him some stats, but he should have been helping to block since that worthless RT was getting slaughtered.

Cade Otten is a GOOD tight end who can’t even block well. Dude is serviceable, can people stop saying he will have a breakout game as if he’s some unstoppable force any given Sunday? This is real life not madden. He’s probably had 3 really good offensive games in his career and you couldn’t remember without going to look it up

The couple plays Durham was in, he seemed to handle pass pro better. He should have gotten more snaps. Never saw Ko in pass pro.

lambchop, count me in as one Buc fan who hopes the Broncos will get whipped so Payton will be given his walking papers. Why did Denver hire him? They know his character history. Licht has always signed players who are not yahoos and divas. It is bearing fruit for sure. Cade knows he’ll get his touches. Team first. Works for me.

Cade Otton isn’t Antonio gates. He isn’t Rob Gronkowski. He needs to learn how to chip and block better for that poor excuse of a right tackle that we have in place of Goedeke. Why in the f would I throw Patton the ball if Mike Evans or Godwin is open. Don’t care about people’s feelings, know your role. Get the ball to the best players

If we use Otton more will open up other wr’s but we never have consistently used Otton.

Otten a quality player with right attitude….and his blocking abilities have assisted others into looking good as well…..his turn catching passes will arrive and will surprise opposition as he scores…..
