Baker Mayfield On Pace For Blowout Season

September 17th, 2024

Strong start to season.

If this keep up, Joe guesses a lot of folks will have to cough up the following words.

“Baker Mayfield is the best quarterback in the NFC South.”

That’s the way it is trending, as pointed out by Jenna Laine of ESPN (don’t get Joe started about Derek Carr and the slimy Saints).

It seems after two weeks, Mayfield is on pace for the best season of his career.

Are we looking at a career-best season for QB Baker Mayfield? Mayfield’s five passing touchdowns (with a sixth on the ground) are the most ever for him over the first two games of a season. His ability to thrive under duress (he was sacked five times) and connect with wideout Chris Godwin — who has amassed 200 receiving yards and two touchdowns through the first two games — was the difference-maker against the Lions.

Of course, Mayfield can’t have too many more games like Sunday. Sure, he and the Bucs won, but the Lions pretty much bottled him up. Detroit is a very good team.

In Week 1, Mayfield was fabulous. And Mayfield is on a roll. In his last nine games, Mayfield has thrown 19 touchdowns against five picks. Any quarterback would take that ratio.

In that same span, Mayfield is averaging 283 passing yards a game and has led the Bucs to a 6-2 record, including a playoff win.

Joe thinks it is safe to suggest if Mayfield has a career year, the Bucs will be in the playoffs this winter. Hey, Mayfield had a career year last year, and the Bucs made noise in the playoffs. Why can’t that be repeated?

Where are the Baker Haters and the Traskies?

  2. ModHairKen … Says:

. . . and their cousins, the cuties who misspell Bowles’ name and hate him, too?

  3. OHBucFan Says:

As stated before: This year will establish Baker’s threshold. Can anyone say Jim Plunkett?

  4. David Says:

    OHBucFan

    You’re not a buccaneer fan
    You’re a troll.
There are so many people on this site that would rather be right in their negativity than actually see the Bucs do well.

    Pathetic

  5. David Says:

    4000 yards and 30+ TDs.
They have a real OC and the O line will get better and better as the year goes on

  6. SlyPirate Says:

Excited about Baker this year. He looks like a vet. With Goedeke back and a little more out of the run game, this offense will continue to thrive.

If everyone can get healthy, the Bucs will be tough to beat.

  7. Jack Burton Mercert Says:

    How is Denver’s defense?

  8. Boomer Says:

I’m with David on the O line.
Wish Otton would learn to block/chip a bit better. – he’s been around long enough.
While 4k may be a tad high, not crazy.
    All aboard.

  9. Bucs Guy Says:

For the math challenged, 4000 yards is an average of 235 yards a game over a 17 game season. Seems achievable with this team.

I look at the TD to interception ratio. 3 to 1 or better is very good. Baker has gotten into trouble when he tries to do too much and throws interceptions. Keep Baking!!!

  10. flipster Says:

That was until the Panthers shook up the hierarchy with the Red Rifle.

We all know Andy Dalton is the best QB in the NFC South now (sarcasm over)

  11. Lightningvinny Says:

Baker for MMVP,,, most MOXIE valuable player ,,,, one game at a time ,,, let’s get our guys back healthy and maybe pick up a guy or 2 with the money we have ,, Restructure Godwin and get a few more $$$$ to spend ,,,, Bring Shack Back rested and rejuvenated,,, could be one of those Go For It kind of years

  12. Truth be Told Says:

The Bucs and Baker are a perfect match and both are lucky to have formed a partnership at an ideal time. Running game can only get better. Baker gives us a chance every game. Let’s get Baked! Go Bucs

  13. heyjude Says:

Baker is doing fantastic! Yes to his career year. The entire team has that strong vibe to win too. Seeing many records being broken.

Agree with SlyPirate – with a healthy team, it’s only going to get better.

  14. Bakerfan Says:

But, but, but he is bound for a regression. So many said this before. He will blow those numbers out if he stays healthy and the O line stays healthy.

  15. Beeej Says:

    Pfft. 56 QBR last year

  16. OHBucFan Says:

Hey David – Man, talk about looking for negativity…
Why don’t you learn your history? Plunkett won two Super Bowls for the Raiders and had a great career after stumbling around for the first few years after being drafted number one by the Patriots.
We can only hope that Baker will have the kind of numbers that Jim had after bouncing around a bit before settling in.
    Troll that!

  17. Marky Mark Says:

Thanks ohbucs fan. The Plunkett vs Baker comparison may be valid. First oVerall to bad teams. Browns were 1-31. 2 or more rings seems right

  18. Fan of the South Says:

Sure raw numbers look great but when you view them based on Competition are they really that great?

In the first two weeks Lil B has faced defenses that ranked 32nd and 25th.
In the first 2 weeks Carr has faced the 3ed and 5th best.

Over the same stretch of games the win/loss have been pretty much the same and barring a tie breaker which the Saints currently own would have won the Division and the Bucs would have been out.

QB’s like Darnold and Minshew led their teams to victory against just as tough of defenses and looked more impressive doing so.

As long as Mayfield keeps getting those TD’s on routes that even Todd Bowles could score he will keep impressing Joe. Personally I think it’s a case of the Tortoise and the Hare and over the season the best QB in the Division will “Rise Up”.

  19. Mark Says:

LET BAKER BAKE – SHAKE AND BAKE BABY 🙂

  20. Usfbuc Says:

Can’t wait to play the Falcons and Saints to get a better idea of where we stand. Both of those teams look better than I thought they would.

  21. Trask To The Future Says:

He’s been playing great so far and they just got a huge win in Detroit.

    BUT…

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Bucs Offense only had 200 something total yards. That’s not great. They will lose many games that they only have that level of production in. He had 185 yards passing. That’s also going to lose many games unless we had a dominant running game working at the same time, which we haven’t.

He has to get better at throwing over the middle or Defensive Coordinators are going to adjust.

So far so good, though, I give him his props. He’s played a lot more solid than I thought he would.

  22. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

4500 yds and 45 total TD (40 passsing and 5 rushing)

  23. Matt_PcAfee Says:

    Not the Traskies 🤣

  24. Bucsalltheway Says:

Denver is a trap game doesn’t matter eho runs the team they always play us hard it’s going to be a dog fight. There defense is good but denvers offense isn’t special at all

  25. orlbucfan Says:

Detroit sure didn’t look nor play like a Defense ranked 25th Sunday. Are you kidding me?? They were a steamroller, a healthy one! Mayfield surviving 5 sacks???? His feisty, fearless moxie and our battered Defense beat the Lions fair and square. I’m looking forward to watching him, the healthy OLine (Goedeke needs to wear a concussion helmet), and Coen grow together this season. It’s gonna be fun. Go Mighty Bucs!!

  26. Allen Lofton Says:

Hey, Joe, if you haven’t noticed the Falcons Cousins last night and the Saints Carr pulled out some strong wins this weekend.

If this continues the NFC South Division may not be so shabby and could be a much tougher division than thought by Vegas and Media.

I think the Bucs win in Detroit is the Statement win.

  27. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Judging a defensive ranking off of last years results is a bit silly. Someone mentioned Carolina as having a top 5 defense. Ummm, yeah not his year.

  28. KABucs Says:

Fan of the South… Quit using last year’s rankings for defenses. This is a new season and everything is different.

Trask to the future… No QB would have had very good passing stats with a backup right tackle going against one of the best defensive ends in football. If we would have had the situation against Washington, Baker’s stats would have been worse as well. Any QB in that situation would not have very good pass stats getting sacked five times and running for their lives the whole game. Bake did very well considering the situation.

  29. unbelievable Says:

LMAO at the dummy claiming Carolina has a good defense.

  30. Mike Johnson Says:

Its only 2 games in guys. Remember, we won the 1st 2 games last year and started that fall. Bucs need to remain hungry and get a cushion. We will need that cushion later on when times get tough.

  31. El HEFE Rick Says:

    4800+ yards 35+td 6 int’s rushing yards this season combined rbs 1950

  32. drdneast Says:

So lets no put the cart before the horse yet. This team was 3-1 last season and then went into a nose dive. That isn’t an unfamiliar occurrence for a Bucs team, it has happened before. Let’s play it one game at a time. I dont’t think any of the ’74 Dolphins are worried about us just yet. Nor they should be.

  33. Gipper Says:

No longer fun going after naysayers. Hope they have learned what many of us knew all along about Baker. Not backing down from Brees 2.0 comparison. Ok if you disagree. You have been wrong all along. Just quit the Baker Bois crap and be humble enough to admit that you have seen the light.

  34. Student of the Game Says:

To continue this great start to the season the Bucs still have to get better at running the football. Even if it’s nothing more than a surprise that they didn’t pass.

  35. Student of the Game Says:

Gipper, agreed. We are seeing a fully healed for the first time since his rookie season. Hopefully, this offense can minimize the need for Mayfield to extend plays and allow him to get the ball to the playmakers.
