“It’s Always Good To Learn Lessons When You Win”
September 16th, 2024Immediately after the game yesterday when the Bucs defense stonewalled the Lions for the full fourth quarter, one Bucs player refused to take any credit.
That would be your franchise quarterback Baker Mayfield.
FOX reporter Laura Okmin caught up with Mayfield amid all the handshakes and bro hugs on the turf of Ford Field yesterday and asked him about how Detroit coach Dan Campbell said they wanted Mayfield to beat them.
Mayfield said it was the Bucs defense that beat the Lions.
And Mayfield was right.
“I cannot say enough about our defense,” Mayfield began. “That is not an easy team to play against.
“They’re going for fake punts. They’re going for it on fourth down. Our defense holding up in the end, that’s not easy.”
In fact, Mayfield stopped just short of saying he nearly cost the Bucs the win in the Bucs’ final drive of the game.
“Horrible clock management on my part in that last drive,” Mayfield said. “I’ve gotta make them take a time out so they don’t have an extra one there.
“It’s always good to learn lessons when you win.”
There was one play in the Bucs’ final drive, a drive where they didn’t kill the clock and gave the Lions one last hope, that still gives Joe the shivers. Mayfield, from the Bucs-10, attempted a pass to the right that was nearly picked off by Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes.
Had Barnes caught that ball he would have walked into the end zone with the winning score. Joe wonders how long it would have taken the Bucs and Mayfield to get past that play had that been picked and housed.
Whew. Thankfully, we can try to forget that play.

One of the best plays of the game for me was Baker Mayfield chucking the football into the stands!

JUST 3 WEEKS AGO …
>ATL was a lock to win the NFCS
>DET was 2nd best team in the NFC
>Bucs were 20th in NFL Power Rankings (Saints even lower)
>Baker was a 1-year wonder
…. And then they played the games.

GO BUCS!!!!

Pirate – So true.

Lions were still my team to go to and win the super bowl this year. They are scaring good. Great defensive line and great offensive line. Two good running backs into really good outside receivers and a tight end. This was a big big win.Bowles is a much better Coach than most of us thought. Yes, the right tackle was horrible, but we won the game and over the years we’ve been on the losing side of many games we won statistically.

Lesson learned, good on him. But the team on his back when we needed a
touchback. Loved the way he weaved through traffic and got the first down. Bet the next TD quieted lions fans for a wee bit.

I picked the Bucs to beat the Overrated Jared Golf and the Detroit Lions. A well deserved win by Coach Bowles, the staff, and the players
But l don’t understand why they have 4 TEs on the roster, and they barely uses one of them. I thought for sure they would activate a tackle from the practice squad. They have more TEs than RBs on the roster!!

Hear me out. The Saints could still be an early season illusion! We know the Panthers are terrible, but the Saints and Alvin Kamara have a history of destroying Mike Zimmer led defenses.
Before the game yesterday the last time Alvin Kamara played a Zimmer led defense he scored 6 TD’s.
On that basis I am not certain NO is forreal yet.

Just watched Denver-Steelers highlights in 13-6 Steeler win. Denver was only able to move the ball on short over the middle throws. In the red zone Nix was off target. Bucs can expect more short stuff which they did very well defending yesterday. Bronco defense looked pretty good. Don’t see enough of Denver to know if the defense is good or if was the fact that Justin Fields is just not a very good passer for Pittsburgh.
Any given Sunday anything can happen but if the Bucs simply start early and get a lead, Denver will be forced to throw and the Bucs will have opportunities for interceptions.

A Bucs Fan – I am concerned. They shut down Dallas without Lattimore and this new OC of theirs appears to use the player’s strengths. I hope I am dead wrong and you are spot on, but I am concerned BIG TIME.
But…we are no weakling and it’s OUR division to lose!!! We need to get and stay HEALTHY!!

If Barnes housed that ball, the wheels would begin to fall off.

Wow…. how did the Bucs Win? About as bad of a lopsided box score one could see and still Bucs win. Nice job on defensive coaching and player execution, of bend don’t break.

Coen and Carberry had too much confidence in Skule and didn’t have a Plan B to help him. The lesson? When we have a tough match up, the game plan should be to help our player from the first play until our guy shows he can handle the matchup. Applies to the defense as well.

They played it smart. Sacks are only drive killers. It’s strip sacks and turnovers that dictate the game. Baker had one turnover. No points were scored off of it. In my book it’s a negated interception. Goff was giving away points yesterday. This team is a unit, one heartbeat. Keep it up! Don’t get cocky or overconfident just stay the course. On to Denver. Don’t play down to the competition. Go in there and do what needs to be done. And before you know this team will be healthy and rearing to go. Crazy to think it’s week two we’re not at our fullest potential. And the fight they play with no matter the cards dealt to them. Absolute chaps

Baker does one thing very well. He makes plays at critical times. He ran out of the pocket several times and hit Godwin to keep drives going- then the great throw for the td and the run up the middle.
He’s a player. Must admit I’m surprised, didn’t think picking him up last year was a good move. Proving a lot of people wrong.

Bucs play Sean Payton Broncos in Tampa next weekend. Broncos are 0-2. They are nowhere near as good as the Detroit Lions. Mebbe they need a new HC? Bowles/Coen will have their team ready. I sure hope it’s a blowout.
September 16th, 2024 at 11:41 am
We certainly would have lost that game a few years ago…
September 16th, 2024 at 12:07 pm
Baker should have faked a throw then ran it on that last third down play. Having said that he threw for and ran for the td that was the final score tally. Campbell’s click management mistake was worse because it took points off the board

What a great interview with Laura. Love it. Baker “Everyone trusts each other.” There it it.
September 16th, 2024 at 2:10 pm
Baker’s honesty is appreciated by everyone on the team. He is winning his way into the biggest doubters hearts. That was a good Lions team they beat yesterday. Can’t get complacent against Denver. Get the ball to ME13 and Godwin and good things will happen. Hope the team resolves the backup tackle issue. Nothing wrong with a two tight end set especially when you have Godwin and ME on your team. They should have been double teaming Hutchinson all day whether Goedke was hurt or not.

This game should silence Trask to the Dumpster and other UF zealots. We are damn lucky to have Baker Mayfield. We got him for nothing and he has outplayed ANY QB the Bucs have ever drafted this last year and 2/17th of this one. We have our QB if we can keep him healthy. Need to improve his protection now!
September 16th, 2024 at 2:50 pm
Bet the Browns would be happy to have Baker back? Their $235Million dollar man continues to struggle. It is going to be poetic justice when Baker and Bucs totally outplay Watson and the Browns this year. Off to a good start just need to keep things rolling. Good to roll with MW and Godwin. At some point, teams will be soft on covering Otton. Look for him to be more involved vs Denver.
September 16th, 2024 at 2:54 pm
Matt PcAfee a few years ago we had Tom Brady – and would have won that game by 20.
September 16th, 2024 at 3:02 pm
BucsfaninCommieLand is probably stoned out of his mind posting from the Chaz in Portland.
Trask didn’t play yesterday. Trask has never gotten a real opportunity.
Mayfield’s success isn’t proof of anything about Trask.
Baker is out there playing hero ball and it’s working. We absolutely take it.
We don’t want 6’0″ Baker having to win games with legs on a regular basis, though. On the road late v Detroit to overcome a 2 game losing streak. Yeah hero it up Shake and Bake, but he better not do that at home against Denver.
Can’t keep going to the well on that or else you will see number 2 out there attacking the mid range and the seam.

Mostly Peachful Trashk Fan — Brady would have been in the ER, if not decapitated thanks to the Druler at RT. Your ignorance is blinding. Tom was 43 in the Super Bowl year and ran slightly slower than the speed of smell, about the same as your love boi.
