Sackless And Victorious

September 15th, 2024

Who says you can’t beat a big-time passing offense on the road without a beastly pass rush?

Joe was so impressed by the Bucs’ win today in Detroit for so many reasons, but Joe might be most impressed by Tampa Bay pulling it off without a sack of Jared Goff.

Yeah, they got a little pressure, but they couldn’t put Goff on his ass. Usually, that’s a recipe for disaster. But the Bucs’ secondary came to play, showing that 2023 is in the rear view mirror. The Bucs had 9 passes defensed, which is a huge total. Zyon McCollum racked up four himself, including an interception.

Rookie nickel cornerback Tykee Smith made an impact and Jamel Dean played very well after getting burned for a 50-yard bomb early in the game.

Safety Jordan Whitehead made impact plays, the kind Ryan Neal would not have had last season.

Backup safety Christian Izien filling in for Antoine Winfield, Jr? Money.

What a punshing defensive win for the Bucs, 20-16. If the Lions can’t light you up, who in the NFC will?

So much kudos to Bowles. Holy cannoli. What a win.

Credit to the team for playing hard, playing together.

    Great game

    LFG!!!!!!

  4. D-Rok Says:

Looking at the box score/stats for the game – Detroit 463 total yards, Bucs only 216. Bespeaks a defense keeping the Lions out of the e’zone. Great job, Bucs – you overcame a LOT of obstacles en route to this statement win.

  5. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

To be fair, we were in Goff’s grill a LOT, and that did cause the late pick to Izien. I can’t believe that dude is an undrafted FA in his SECOND YEAR. What a huge pickup by Licht and the scout team.

  6. firethecannons Says:

Lions outcoached and outplayed!!! Baker was evasive as usual.

  7. A Bucs Fan Says:

Whitehead made the biggest impact imo. Izien played how I thought he would.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

Credit goes to Bowles for not being stubborn like he’s been in the past. Britt was terrible in week 1, was doing to the defense last week what Skule was doing to the offense today – and Bowles made a change – plus Dennis out there for most of the game and it paid off.

  9. Pewter Power Says:

Can’t sustain that the Bucs need a pass rush and run game in November and December.

    Secondary played great

    Uh…… Joe?

    Sorry, had to do it.

    Big step!

@D-Rok- That’s why the ‘Oh, the Bucs don’t have a good pass defense, look at all the yardage they give up’ really doesn’t tell the story. It’s people who look at the stat sheet but don’t watch the game. Bowles concept is giving up yards for time and turnovers, and he’s REALLY good at it. Our passing defense ALWAYS gives up yards, but our scoring D? 5th, 7th, 12th, 7th the last four years, looking good again this year.

    Team win, all the way.
And Bowles climbs another rung towards HC respectability

  15. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Cant tell you how happy I am to have Jordan Whitehead back in our secondary.

  16. D-Rok Says:

@Call, yep that’s exactly my point. Almost double the yards we gave up, but not double the points. Very good D today!!!!

  17. Bucs And Them Says:

It cannot be understated how impressive this win was! All the missing starters and then losing Vea midstream? A hearty tip of the hat to Coach Bowles, Coen, the whole coaching staff & players! How we managed to not run out the clock and give Detroit one last chance is beyond me. That has to be addressed. They almost blew it but, the injury riddled defense nutted up and pulled it off! Wow! Big WIN!

  18. Bucs And Them Says:

    Overstated!……oops!

  19. Dave Pear Says:

Today, the defense did indeed rule.

    And Drule druled.

Cut him before the flight home and give him a bus ticket to Windsor.

  20. unbelievable Says:

They hit Goff quite a few times tho, and def pressured a couple throws.

It’s almost like… pressures, while not as good as sacks, are still very important… Imgaine that Joe?

    😝😂

  21. B Says:

The 49ers and possibly the Saints, Joe that’s who.

  22. Surfing The Waivers Says:

Hard to get sacks when the other team can blatantly hold all day. And how about that missed face mask call that gave the Lions tow additional possessions?

KC refs in Motor City today. No matter. Still kicked A$$

Kudos to Todd and the Defense. Turnovers and bending but not breaking in the secondary.

    LFGTB!!!

  23. Surfing The Waivers Says:

    Two additional possessions. Typo.

  24. rrsrqnc Says:

That’s a team that believed in their coaching

  25. Matt_PcAfee Says:

After Baker had that TD run the D was fired up!

  26. Ira's Bannana Says:

    Dennis was awesome

  27. Simeon4HOF Says:

Bright side today despite injuries and Vea was watching Zyon, Whitehead, Dennis, Izien, Smith, even JTS make their plays

  28. Hodad Says:

Imagine if we had Hutchinson. Only sad thing about this game was being sackless off the edge. Kudos to the D for preserving the win, but very disappointed YaYa, and JTS didn’t make a play.

  29. Beeej Says:

JTS seems to realize it’s contract season—had 3 tackles, a TFL, and a QB hit

  30. Bucamania Says:

Yaya didn’t do much. Expected more from him. Bowles coached a helluva game.

  31. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as BringBucsBack) Says:

THIS GAME was Bowles greatest defensive coaching effort!! More of it!!

If we can’t get sacks, cover the back end. New Bucs trend?

  32. bob in valrico Says:

Great win for the team, Bowles, and Baker. With all the injuries on the team on the defense and at OT. the team stood up when it needed to and Baker showed his determination and heart. Great effort on the TD run and previous first down run.

  33. Allen Lofton Says:

The Bucs got an inside push which was disruptive for Goff who was off target several times with a couple of interceptions and forced pass attempts.

The Bucs rattled Goff which led to a Bucs win.

The Bucs rattled Goff which took Goff off his game.

  35. Commander Says:

I’ve noticed over the last two games our cornerbacks are playing a few yards closer to the line of scrimmage than last year.

  36. itzok Says:

Amazing how Belichicks plan to pressure Goff up the middle in his face, he will throw it to the other team, and when he does just catch the ball played out. Bucs got two picks and should have had one more that was dropped. and close on another throw.

  37. drdneast Says:

Jared Goff got in touch with his inner Jared Goff today.
