“What’s Really Energized The Whole Organization”

September 14th, 2024

So TV network game analysts have the benefit of sitting down the day before a game to talk to Bucs coaches and players, and sometimes team officials.

The production meetings are there to help announcers sound like they are true team experts and to have them share great Xs and Os insight with viewers.

Daryl “Moose” Johnston, the former Cowboys great, called the Bucs-Commanders game on FOX last week and will have the Bucs again tomorrow in Detroit.

Johnston spoke on a FOX Sports show this week and shared how he talked to Todd Bowles last week about how Bowles set the bar super high with his 2024 team in a hurry.

“They really got into Super Bowl talk and the Super Bowl conversation right away,” Johnson said.

He added that the Bucs are steaming with confidence, in part because of coaching and personnel changes on offense.

“I think that’s what’s really energized the whole organization, not just the offensive side, but this is kind of built into the defensive side when you talk about the complementary component. … It’s [offensive coordinator] Liam Coen coming in and Jason Licht and his group really kind of solidifying that offensive in the interior, and them starting to really focus on the run game,” Johnston said.

“The guys really love the offense.”

Whether it’s a high school basketball team or a college soccer team, players usually know in a hurry when a change to an offensive approach suits the club well.

Whatever you think about the job former Bucs playcaller Dave Canales did last year, there’s no denying the Bucs prefer what Coen has on his menu.

If the Bucs can combine that confidence with actual success executing, Joe is confident the Bucs have enough raw talent on offense now to reach a Super Bowl, if they could actually get there.

For the most part I had the game muted, but man was he terrible when I turned on the audio. This moron, on the screen pass where Barton was called for being downfield when he wasn’t – and the picked up the flag, they’re showing the replay and it clearly shows Barton not beyond the line as the ball is coming out, and Moose is harping about, yep, that’s a foul. At least watch the game if you’re going to comment on it.

Dave Canales got the job Leftnut turned down.

So pleased that the Bucs moved to a more literate Brand as the model for current and future success

  3. WiseCrack Says:

    @Rod Munch

To be fair and because you had the mute button on demand. He said that it was a penalty because when White caught it, Barton was down field.

The rule on the other hand, is when the ball leaves the QBs hand. Thus, he wasnt wrong he just wasnt right.

  4. WilieG Says:

Rod Munch I agree about Johnston. He is terrible. He wouldn’t shut up. I’m old enough to remember when the play by play guy described what was happening and the color guy shut the hell up while he did so. Johnston obviously doesn’t follow that system and thinks he needs to talk nonstop.

They love the new offense because the playmakers all get to eat and there is a buffet awaiting in Detroit! Go Bucs!!!

  6. Rayjay1122 Says:

    And Baker Mayfield sux!!! 🤣😂🤣

  7. Fred McNeil Says:

I think we have a punchers chance if whoever replaces Goedeke can at least slow down Hutchinson. Two more touchdowns for Evans. First for Otton.

  8. louinsrq Says:

the bucs quietly went thru a rebuild and the next 4 years should be exciting to watch as the talented young team matures…locking up the coaching staff to grow with the players is the next step in the transformation of the bucs

  9. Buddy777 Says:

Just mute the TV. I listen to Gene and Dave on the radio.

  10. Jack Burton Mercert Says:

Canales was an improvement over the guy before him. So far, Coen appears to be an improvement over Canales. So far. Simple as that.

  11. Mike C Says:

    Can we mute Rod?

  12. Knothead71 Says:

    @Buddy777
I’m out of market, up in Georgia. I listen to Gene and Dave as well.
It will be a sad day for me when Gene decides to retire.
I get fired up when he yells “FIRE THEM CANNONS!!”.
My wife says I’m going to have a heart attack or stroke because I’m yelling with him. Meh, whatever, all I want to hear is “BUCS WIN, BUCS WIN, BUCS WIN!”
    L!F!G!

  13. Dave Pear Says:

It’s so great to be done with the Tony Robbin’s wannabe.

Canalwater better have him on speed dial, he’s gonna be out of a job.

  14. Joe Says:

    Knothead71:

Cool story about yelling with Gene. 🙂

  15. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

All right guys I got an inhouse fix for Winfield ok bare with me it’s a little funny, Rashaad White, hahaha haha. Gotta get pressure all game long. I don’t know how to make up for that loss man. Sadd I mean that’s below the belt. God, we need you to work a little magic on this one game right here. This is a low blow and we need you to get us through this game.. Amen.. Let’s Go Bucs!!!!

“…Johnston. …thinks he needs to talk nonstop.”

That is a hurdle all broadcasters have to learn to overcome. I don’t do sports, but I do stream broadcast group play type of stuff, and the naturaly inclination is to fill quiet moments.

It took me three years to learn how to control that instinct (I’ve been trying to improve in multiple areas).

I don’t know how long Johnston had been doing it, but improvement comes from watch those who are better and trying to work on those areas they are better at.

As with all jobs…we improve with time, hard work, and self-examination.

Personally, I didn’t think he was horrible…but he did make some mistakes. I was more focused on the field.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    God I hate auto-incorrect.

  18. Booger Says:

Bonzai, there is NO improvement for Johnston. He is what he is and is amazing to me that he has been able to hold onto his job for THIS LONG. He has been THE most disliked ever since day one, & he’s been doing it now, for DECADES. He’s AWFUL.

  19. heyjude Says:

The Bucs do have so much confidence. And since they are laying low right now, they are going to have all that confidence built up for Lions. Go Bucs!

Buddy777 and Knothead71: I am a lifelong NFL Radio/Bucs Radio fan. I met Gene D backstage at an Arena Football game years ago. He is a decent good gentleman as well as a Bucs homer and A+ announcer. BTW, I live in the Bucs market. The radio dudes are just better, period. Just wanted to give you both a fellow fan shout-out. Go Bucs!!
