Wanna know how to beat Detroit? Look no further than a coach who has six rings.
Bill Belichick (Belicheat?) used to loathe the media. He acted at most press conferences as if he had to undergo an impromptu colonoscopy.
He still might hate the media, but at least now he’s making good coin off it, working for various outlets this season. You can swallow the cough medicine with a smile if it makes you money.
Belichick is just awesome explaining football to the masses.
For example, in this week’s “Inside the NFL,” Belichick had a classroom session with co-hosts Ryan Clark, Chad Johnson and Chris Long. Belichick was at the video board showing clips of the Bucs-Lions game from the divisional playoff game in January.
Bill Belichick: Look, we know if we can get pressure in [Jared] Goff’s face or get him off the spot, Ryan, what can happen?
Ryan Clark: He will throw it to the other team, Coach.
Belichick: And what do we have to do, Chad?
Chad Johnson: You gotta catch the ball.
Belichick then showed and rewound and replayed Jamel Dean’s drop of a pick in the game.
So what would Belichick do if he were Todd Bowles on Sunday? Find some way, any way, whatever it takes, to get heat on Goff.
Belichick: Look, I know from coaching against Goff in the Super Bowl, this is what is going to happen. If you get a free guy running at him… what’s he going to do?
Clark: Throw it to the other team, Coach.
Belichick: And Chad, what do we need to do?
Johnson: We have to catch it.
Please Bucs, catch the ball tomorrow.
As for getting heat on Goff, he is very vulnerable to an interior rush. Last week, if you believe BSPN Analytics, Vita Vea wasn’t even in the top-19 for defensive tackles in block win-rates. Yes, Joe saw the steady diet of double teams on Vea. Joe can assure you Detroit is much better up front than Washington.
Calijah Kancey was the Bucs’ biggest threat to get to Goff up the middle. But he’s out. And maybe too, are the Bucs.

The Bucs real soft spot on its underbelly is clearly is its non intercepting cornerbacks. Heck, with their unwritten motto; they’ll leave no ball uncaught thrown their way everytime. Kinda like the ever ready Easter bunny. Except this group just keep dropping and droppping and dropping. Just ask dean. This groups leading lady in droppped passes. He must holds clinics. Inquiring minds need to know you know.
So this game goes into another track meet mode in order for the Bucs to prevail. that scoreboard will get lit up with all the anticipated scoring activity. Lit up like a Roman candle. And the talent this team has all over this offense. The talent is stacked up like cordwood just hungry to be cut loose. Kinda like the running of the bulls in Spain on that day they run. I’ll bet ole Bucky is chomping at the bit like the young stud that he is all pinned up at the starting gate ready to be cut loose with his buc mandated ten carries and show us his game. Again. Should be a great game for the ‘ over’ gang. Thats for sure.
Go Bucs. And to coach bowles please thank them this time for the victory instead of saying, ‘they should have scored 70’. Jeeesh.

In Januarys game they beat us because we couldn’t stop their short passes to the middle of the field over and over again. I hope Bowles has found an answer for this play

Bill is still a better coach than Bowles he just sucks at being a GM and had some bad rosters after Tom left the patriots. Hopefully Bowles finds a way to get pressure on Goff or it’s going to be a long day.

I have been a little bit of a doubter about Belichick, but I have to say he has really grown into this whole presentation thing. So true, Joe. Hardly hearing him talk before and now he has a personality. He is right on point about Goff. Loved the video!
Somewhat agree – BucsFan81. After Brady and Gronk left (Edelman too), Belichick had nowhere to grow and was at a loss. They didn’t know how to coach new rookie Mac Jones either. Not a good fit for all. Now Mac is doing better with the Jags.

Belichick is obviously enjoying being on the other side of the ball—meaning he no longer must play the secret agent in charge of guarding valuable information.
My guess it’s much more fun to be the guy trying to get the goods than constantly hiding them.
Moreover, casting aside his intransigent demeanor, he has adapted to his new role with an enthusiasm I didn’t know existed. And he’s actually turning into a likable guy in the process.

Detroit is certainly a franchise on the rise. The Bucs are not falling but we are hurting at critical positions. Maybe this one is a win for us “on a given day”.

If Vea is getting doubled as Joe reports, Logan Hall has to win some matchups and Bowles has to get pressure from JTS and Diaby. His blitzes havn’t been working very well. Even if they don’t sack Goff, at least get pressures up the middle, make him go to the checkdowns and short stuff. Detroit has some big play guys, make they work on offense, don’t miss tackles and have one of their speedsters get an easy touchdown.
Vea, c’mon make an impact this week, they really need your help getting to the QB.

Establish the run, dominate the clock, play sound defense, and take advantage of whatever opportunities they give us. I’d feel much better if we weren’t limping into this game, but the rams showed us that this is a beatable team.

How exactly do you plan on playing ‘sound’ defense when you’re missing a bunch of starters, including your team MVP in Winfield?
The defense isn’t going to be able to stop anything, and if the Bucs are so stupid that they think they can ‘establish’ the run vs the 2nd best run defense last year – then they’re going to lose by 30.
What the Bucs need is to finally see some of those exotic blitzes that Bowles was once known for – and go for broke and hope to get some turnovers – because they’re not going to stop the Lions otherwise.
On offense, the Bucs need to be on the attack – no wasting downs running up the middle. The only way the Bucs win this game is if it’s like 38-35
Yeah, let’s just run the ball up the middle, and punt every 4 plays, and that will keep the Bucs in it for all of 2 series.

Rod. Awesome straw men you tried to put in my mouth. Great work. Winfield and Kancey being out, among others, is EXACTLY why our defense has to play sound. Meaning the next men up have to communicate and execute their assignments. If you don’t know what that means just say so. And when did I say that we should run up the middle on every play? You’re just falsely attributing things to me that I never said. We MUST establish the run (not just up the middle) against a good defense as not to become one dimensional. If we can control the line we can run the ball and therefore control the clock. If our defense is on the field for 40 minutes we lose. If we can keep the lions offense on the sideline it will be hard to outscore us.
