Todd Bowles Tries To Put Positive Spin On Injuries

September 14th, 2024

Impact of injuries.

Man, if the Bucs pull off a win Sunday at Detroit, what would that say about the team went it’s healthy?

The Bucs have an awful matchup with the Lions due to injuries. Last year in the playoffs Luke Goedeke had a good game against Lions pass rushing beast Aidan Hutchinson after stonewalling him in October. Goedeke has been ruled out with a concussion.

Detroit quarterback Jared Goff is vulnerable to a pass rush up the middle. Bucs pass rushing beast defensive tackle Calijah Kancey is out.

The Lions have a very good passing attack. The Bucs’ secondary is littered with injuries. All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield is out. And the Bucs are in a wait-and-see mode with starting corner Zyon McCollum as he tries to pass concussion protocol tests today.

Todd Bowles was asked yesterday if he is irked by all the injuries entering Week 2 (as if he can wave a magic wand and prevent them).

Bowles said of the sudden rash of injuries, more typical of December, is better now than later.

“Everybody is going to go through their lumps at some point – better now than mid-season,” Bowles said. “It gives some young guys and some other guys some experience that can help us later on. We’re going to go with what we’ve got.”

Is it enough?

The Bucs’ pass rush scares Joe (it usuallt does) this week, specifically the interior rush. Detroit has one of the better offensive lines in the game. Maybe the best. Without Kancey, the Bucs take a major hit there.

Joe isn’t totally sold on pass rush win rates (or blocking win rates). There seems to be a fair amount of hocus pocus with these stats.

But of the top 19 defensive tackles in Week 1 documented by BSPN Analytics (you can’t spell “analytics” without “anal”), you won’t find any Bucs defensive tackle.

Without Kancey, teams can focus on taking out Vita Vea. And just like that — poof! — you have no interior pass rush.

how about the lack of interior presence vs lions oline and run game. seems like that also could be a problem

  2. JSmalls Says:

This is twice the interior rush has been
mentioned as being poor last week, could it be because they were trying to contain and keep Daniel’s in the pocket?

  3. heyjude Says:

Absolutely agree with the “hocus pocus” stats.

A lot of injuries. That is for sure. Optimistically thinking the coaches have a plan. Vea definitely needs to stay healthy.

  4. Zoocomics Says:

We pull off the win or even make it a close slugfest against the Lions in their house tomorrow.

The league will get put on notice to watch out when we’re healthy.

“” Bucs pass rushing glass tiger Callijah Kancey is out.””
    There. Fixed it for ya.

  6. Hodad Says:

Dirk Kotter once said, the guys we got are the guys we got. True, but if I were Licht, I’d be on high alert for a DT, even through trade. Depending on Hall, and Kancey as your A1, and A2 is risky.

  7. Beeej Says:

Read elsewhere that Kancey’s hurt calf is NOT the one he hurt last year

  8. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Only week 2 and the injuries are mounting. And Lions are more physical than Commanders. Buttercup Kancey will end up costing the Bucs some wins.

  9. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Well here’s a little something that could help the offense. Barton LT Wirfs RT Hainsey C . We could have possibly beat them last time if we would have called timeout. Now we don’t need a hailmary we have a dragster and Corvette. The Vette scared us with a couple drops last week but that was just fluke stuff. And we could play Winston if Goff gets hurt.

    Time for Whitehead to shine

Next man up!! Do your job and help the team!!

  12. mj Says:

the solution is for the offense to put up 40 points

  13. ATLBUC Says:

One thing that we’re forgetting is that Pene Sewell is out and they’re starting safety is out. They have quite a few injuries as well.

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

Sewell being out could be a big equalizer. I’ll have to look at the injury report again.

  15. unbelievable Says:

I have not read that Sewell was ruled out yet. Still listed as questionable. Davenport listed as doubtful.

Obviously that would help equalize things a bit more.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

    It’s gonna take a 40 burger, Earl.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

The only way we beat them Lions is a high scoring affair. We got to outscore them.
