Bucs Lost More Than Just A Right Tackle
September 13th, 2024So Baker Mayfield was talking about his offensive line this week on the Buccaneers Radio Network.
He made it very clear — without hesitation and without calling someone else out for toughness — that right tackle Luke Goedeke is the “enforcer” of the Bucs’ offensive line. It’s a combination of Goedeke’s attitude and his verbal and physical assaults on opponents, Mayfield said.
Goedeke will not play Sunday in Detroit in the rematch against the Lions at 1 o’clock because of a concussion.
Remember Goedeke’s first showdown with beastly Lions pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson? Every Hutchinson pass rush attempt was compiled on video; Hutchinson was neutered.
It wasn’t quite as good against the Lions in the playoffs, but Hutchinson didn’t wreck the game with Goedeke on the field.
Joe sees Goedeke is a big spiritual loss for the Bucs, but even bigger on the field.
Sorry, but Joe has watched enough of backup Justin Skule in training camp and preseason to not think he’s up for Sunday’s challenge. Hopefully, Joe is proven wrong. Please, football gods, please.
Regardless, the Bucs offense will change Sunday without Goedeke because offensive coordinator Liam Coen has vowed to get his offensive tackles help, and it’s a safe bet that means a tight end alongside Skule and much fewer empty backfields.
Get well soon, Luke!

This would be a great game to forfeit. Little chance of winning, can’t take any more injuries, could get Baker hurt. Forfeit, and everyone heals up and ready to take care of Denver in Tampa.
September 13th, 2024 at 4:34 pm
Luke is turning into one of the better RT’s in the league IMO. My comparison is Lane Johnson. Same size, just slightly shorter arms. He will be missed Sunday. Get healthy ASAP Luke!
September 13th, 2024 at 4:42 pm
Forfiet!? What kinda loser idea is that? Ok we have some injuries. Coach Bowels needs to put the best players he has available out in the field and them boys need to play their guts out. Don’t leave anything out there. Never give up.
LFG!
September 13th, 2024 at 4:44 pm
It sucks, but it is what it is.
Let’s just try to get through the game without losing any other starters.
I told ya’ll during training camp that injury bug was coming for us this season. Just had a bad feeling…
September 13th, 2024 at 4:45 pm
Still Pumped for the game !!!!!!!! I a Bucs fan being the underdog is in my DNA. 😈😈
September 13th, 2024 at 4:47 pm
Marcus Davenport is unlikely to play against the Bucs and Lions stud RT Sewell is among the walking wounded and very questionable with an ankle injury. Even if he plays he won’t be 100%. Their starting safety Kerby Joseph is also questionable with a hamstring injury. Bucs have a shot.
September 13th, 2024 at 4:48 pm
What a difference a position change makes. As a rookie left guard, he pretty much stunk. At the position he played in college, he’s crucial.
September 13th, 2024 at 4:52 pm
Vea for right tackle….just kidding! Every team has injuries every week. Time for someone else to actually earn their paycheck. I’m sure there are game plans for starting tackles being out. There are teams with 3 lineman out and somehow they still compete.
September 13th, 2024 at 4:53 pm
Most of these hobbled players will be back in 2 – 3 weeks. We should look at it like we’re lucky it could be worse. This is the NFL – every team is gonna have injuries. We’re not the kind of team that needs to use injuries as an excuse.
September 13th, 2024 at 4:58 pm
Now if we lost ME and CG and or Baker for an extended time it would hurt. But for now let’s just keep grinding until everyone is back. We’re gonna be just fine.

Jeff
Nobody forfeits a football game you snowflake. Go watch golf if you don’t wanna see physicality
September 13th, 2024 at 5:13 pm
At Liam seems competent enough to adjust his game plan, unlike the last two we OCs we had.
September 13th, 2024 at 5:14 pm
Why not move Barton to Right Tackle for this game?
September 13th, 2024 at 5:20 pm
We’ve got nothing to lose (except the game) so let it fly and kick some a$$!
September 13th, 2024 at 5:40 pm
With Baker and his escapability, it’s more important to have Barton at Center. I do question why this Drule is the best we can do for backup RT. But it’s probably better to only have one lineman replaced than doing the curly shuffle all over the line, that promotes the matador bust.

Run the effin ball
September 13th, 2024 at 5:48 pm
We must endure.
I hope all our injured Bucs heal fast! We’ll all see how deep our team is.

One consequence of the new rules requiring tackles to line up closer to the line of scrimmage might be an increase in the number of concussions that the tackles sustain. I rewatched the game and I noticed that time and time again the edge rushers were getting right up into the face of Luke and head-butting him in the face with the crown of their helmet. Wirfs has longer arms so he was able to keep them out of his face more effectively. The league should really monitor this and start calling it if they don’t want to start losing a lot of linemen to concussions. In this case wearing the protective shell wouldn’t offer the offensive lineman any protection, you would have to force the defensive players to wear it to cushion the force of the head butt.

I have confidence in our OC. While I wonder if the Bucs can win, that’s because we’ve not seen what Coen can do. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll eke out a win. This staff seems very different than last years. Coen & TB work together. What an idea!!
September 13th, 2024 at 6:21 pm
Leave a tight end to chip simple
September 13th, 2024 at 6:25 pm
Bucs r do a win against lions I don’t think they loo,ed that good against the hobbled up Rams last week they were lucky to get it to over time & get the win hold u r horses we can do this
September 13th, 2024 at 6:26 pm
Rest the injured players. Need them 100% healthy for the meat of the schedule ahead… games against Falcons, Saints, and home against the Eagles.
September 13th, 2024 at 6:28 pm
I see brady gave baker his top 3 pick of the week what a brown nose now that he is in the booth he never even called baker si ce he took over last year
September 13th, 2024 at 6:53 pm
^ Why would Brady have called Baker last year?
Some of you are so weird about this stuff.
September 13th, 2024 at 6:54 pm
What’s the over/under on Kancey getting on the field by Halloween?
September 13th, 2024 at 7:06 pm
The Bucs young guys will step up. They need to get their feet wet. I have complete faith in them!!
September 13th, 2024 at 7:26 pm
What is most annoying to me about these injuries is that 2 of the big ones this week happened in practice!
How is Goedeke getting a concussion in practice? I know you have to practice like you play and go hard but come on. For an OL unless he got a lil rambunctious and put his head on someone, doesn’t seem like it should happen.
Kancey on a Friday before Sunday game is even worse.
September 13th, 2024 at 7:37 pm
Scrub tackle better sellout to protect Baker. We might have lost the game with a healthy team
Don’t let the unthinkable happen for a lost cause
Sure, play to win. Just don’t leave the franchise exposed for one game. Chip with a TE or two. Keep White in there to protect. I don’t hate Trask, but I’d hate to see him Sunday.
September 13th, 2024 at 8:15 pm
What about Hainsey at RT if Skule is so bad? More worried about the defense to be honest. Think the players lost on defense will have a bigger negative impact.
September 13th, 2024 at 8:20 pm
Someone needs to tell Baker to stop headbutting everybody before the game
September 13th, 2024 at 8:30 pm
Losing Goedeke put’s the offense in a lot of pressure situations from Hutch. It will limit Baker Mayfield’s ability to let plays develop.
It could get ugly, quickly.
It’s ok, I didn’t mark this as a win when Inlooked at the schedule.
Hope we get healthy, fast.
I’ll be open to surprises, but I’m not expecting them.
September 13th, 2024 at 8:45 pm
There’s actually no pressure on the Bucs now. If Detroit loses this game or even come close to losing to us missing key players like this it’ll be their season and their team being questioned. Delusions of grandeur Like megaton and stafford but never accomplished anything
September 13th, 2024 at 9:05 pm
There are injuries on both sides. Let the game play out. I am looking for Liam to make adjustments to help out the RT. This game should be high scoring and we have weapons on offense. I expect Carlton Davis to get injured on a fall. Not that his loss will be felt much since he gave up the most yards against the Rams and got injured in that game. Surprise, surprise.
Liam and Baker are going to test those new CBs/DBs on the Lions. We just need to buy him some time in the pocket. I hope missing Goedeke doesn’t expose Mauch. Mauch was mauled and pushed around in the last game a bit.
September 13th, 2024 at 9:08 pm
Liam claimed the offense will not change, but I have to think a tight end or a back is going to be helping quite a bit.
I would hope so anyway
September 13th, 2024 at 9:38 pm
Just do your best Baker!!!
September 13th, 2024 at 10:53 pm
You gonna think I’m crazy, but it Skule looks bad, how about Elijah Klein in at right tackle??? Dude is wide as a refrigerator!!
Thoughts???
He might get beat a couple of times but he’s a massive presence and looked like he can run block with no issues 🤷🏻♂️
September 13th, 2024 at 11:43 pm
Coen said it would be Robert Hainsey, who last played tackle at Notre Dame.
September 13th, 2024 at 11:44 pm
Jeff….. I know you are a troll, but that is even ridiculous for your lame @$$
September 14th, 2024 at 3:58 am
Nailed it Joe! I think a bit more highly of Skule than you however.
He will get help. I just hope the “help” looks better than they have previously.
Our starting TEs have been hit and miss and mostly miss. RBs are the same. Has anyone addressed this on our coaching staff? They know who to block but obviously not how to block!
I will say that Durham looked capable in his few snaps last week.
Go Bucs!
September 14th, 2024 at 4:46 am
I would try Hainsey at tackle and Skule or Klein at swing tackle. The Bucs might also keep White in pass pro more.
September 14th, 2024 at 7:52 am
Let Skule, and Ko Kieft beat on Hutchenson all day, that would be my game plan. Which ever side Hutchenson plays off of, even Wirfs side, have Ko follow him, and hit him. It’s worth throwing an extra body at him every play. That would take a weapon off the field to do, but we have plenty of weapons.
September 14th, 2024 at 8:38 am
Jeff, sorry buddy but that is a losing attitude. ESPECIALLY seeing as this is only the SECOND game of the season coming up.
I kinda hope you were just joking but I know better.
September 14th, 2024 at 8:49 am
Bring back the chopblock… “Hey! I forgot”
September 14th, 2024 at 10:42 am
I agree with Don’t be mad, run the ball. This is a great opportunity to establish the run early, and keep Hutchunson chasing a Running back for most of the game. Roll Baker to the left most of the time, and have a TE help block Hutchinsin on the right side.
September 14th, 2024 at 4:00 pm
I trust Cohen to get it done
September 14th, 2024 at 4:01 pm
I trust in Cohen to get it done
September 14th, 2024 at 4:37 pm
Is it true, Hainsey will start at RT? Well at least the book on him says he’s an ok pass blocker. Run met.
