The (Early) Success Of Liam Coen

September 13th, 2024

Bucs OC Liam Coen.

Yeah, Joe gets it. It was Week 1. Historically, Week 1 in the NFL is the biggest annual head-fake in the league.

And yeah, Joe gets it. The Bucs played the Commandos, a woeful team. There’s a reason they had the second-overall pick in the draft. And it wasn’t because of a trade.

Still, under new Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen, if you aren’t into Week 1 overreactions, the Bucs may have found a gem in the former Los Angeles Rams and Kentucky Wildcats play-caller.

Courtesy of the Bucs’ media relations department this morning, here are cool morsels of what the Bucs offense under Coen accomplished Sunday.

* The Bucs were the only offense in the NFL with four different players who had at least 60 yards from scrimmage. That’s what you call spreading the wealth around.

* The Bucs had at least two more receiving touchdowns from its wide receivers than any other team in the league last weekend. Here again is an example of the skilled weapons in the passing game the Bucs have collected.

* No other NFL team had two running backs with at least 75 yards from scrimmage. The Bucs running backs can and will do damage to defenses. Rachaad White through the air and Bucky Irving on the ground.

* And of course there is Baker Mayfield. He was the only quarterback in Week 1 to toss four touchdown passes. May have had five had Jalen McMillan not hesitated coming out of a break.

Yeah, it was great to see the offense look lethal. On Sunday in Detroit, the Bucs will be a far bigger and steeper test from the Lions than what the Commandos put up.

If their offense can finish off drives with 7 instead of field goals we will get one hell of a game. I read that Goff only passed for 217 yards vs the Rams so its time to watch the film and figure out what the Rams did so well. They didn’t sack him much I recall.

The Lions ran for a ton of yards vs the Rams. Whatever the Rams were doing, don’t do that because it was bad. Hopefully getting Logan Hall back will help stop the run game.

Whatever it takes, the Bucs have to have a plan to stop LaPorta. Tight ends have a history of killing the Bucs. Just do whatever it takes. Both of our corners are fast enough to keep up with the speed of the Lions on the outside but I always worry about the middle of the field. Maybe it was because Devin White was always losing track of tight ends and backs. He was one of the worst tacklers who ever played middle linebacker.

No team had an Coen’s offense scheme tape last week. Now Detroit has one and can come up with a good game plan to stop our offense. It’ll be much tougher for the Bucs to put up points this week. Makes me a bit concerned with all the injuries on the Bucs’ defense.

  3. Boomer Says:

We scored 30 or more points only 3 times last year and topped 300 yards of offense only 6 times during the regular season.

May be tougher now that there’s tape ALABAMA, but don’t think we’ve seen much of the offense. Our injuries in the secondary have me a bit nervous but if we can sustain some drives and score – game will be close.

Definitely love the trend and I’m all in on Coen as a big upgrade from the last guy.

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

Tall task coming. Starting RT Luke Goedeke is officially out. Is Skule any good as a run blocker? Going to have to max protect Baker and chip Hutchinson every single play.

  5. Baking with Coen Says:

We need some Moxie from our backups who are starting most of all.

    LFBake!!!!

  6. DBS Says:

Baker is not going into the game with one hand tied behind his back. Run White up the middle. He has the authority to change plays. This is going to make all the difference in the world if the defense was ready for what was going to be run and Baker saw it.

  7. Fan of the South Says:

    Joe and his Math.

Carr had 3 TD passes so either Joe overlooked the Saints which is something the Bucs should never do or Joe needs to get the record changed as everyone has Mayfield with 4 TD’s and not 5.

Although over stating just how impressive Mayfield is has become the norm.

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It was a great opening day.

But against a weak team. Still a lot to prove.

Score 30 against a good defensive team.

  9. DBS Says:

Where does it say Baker had 5 TD’s ? It says 4 . MAY have had 5 if.

  10. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Maybe we can do to the Lions what we did to the Saints a few years back with Fitzpatrick at QB and hang 47 on the road. I don’t think the lions can hang with that kind of offense.

  11. Rod Munch Says:

The Redskins gave up over 30 points a game last season, and had huge turnover and a new scheme. While it’s great the Bucs beat up on them – people really need to slow down with the hot takes and lets see what the Bucs do when facing a real NFL defense. Hopefully they can keep it up – and they’re going to need to since I assume the Lions are going to score a lot of points.

  12. Ol' Boy Says:

No. Teams should hang 30’s on Washington. Detroit will be the barometer for our offense and we can go from there.

  13. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Had to laugh – I heard MJD (Maurice Jones Drew) say that some team would need to outscore the other team in order to win the game. I’m sure he’d like that one back.

  14. GoneGator Says:

I really like Coen. I think he could turn out to be the perfect OC @ the perfect time for the Bucs but he does need to “back it up”.

It’ll be very interesting to see how he adapts and game plans for Detroit.

If we can hang at least 25 on them we can win, and I believe we will.

Should NOT expect 80% completion rate again but that ain’t necessary.

Glad we’re getting this game now! Good reality check early in the season. We’ll know a lot more about where we stand by Sunday night.

  15. MattyB Says:

The commander d line is not an easy task

  16. MattyB Says:

The commander’s overall are a poor team but the d line is as good as we’ll face anywhere this season so we cannot discount what we accomplished Sunday.

  17. J Says:

I believe in Coen to provide protection for Baker when calling plays. There will definitely be some less than ideal matchups at times, but we have just as many quality athletes, if not more than Detroit, to be creative enough to win. Getting a specials teams TD wouldn’t hurt either.

  18. Dave Pear Says:

When we think of the great NFL offensive teams, they all have multiple weapons that will hurt you. Bucs took McLaurin away and they had nothing else but the QB running. The Niners – even their fullback is a lethal weapon.

Bucs have 3 if not 4 WR weapons. Go ahead, double Mike and Chris. JMac will shred, Palmer needs to run better routes – he rounds them off too much — but still. And then there’s Cade and the two headed RB attack.

Our offense has great potential for sure.

Maybe we need to play with a 6th O-lineman the whole game to help out the RT, I guess it’s Drule. Yikes.

  19. MattyB Says:

I love how Cohen is letting Baker in the spread formation as much as possible it really is right up bakers strengths

  20. SenileSenior Says:

The (very early) successful of Liam Coen. But it is encouraging to see how we spread the “touches” around. Baker and Coen could be a scary combo. Cannot wait to see how our offense does against the Lions.

    Go Bucs!

  21. SenileSenior Says:

    Success

  22. KABucs Says:

One interesting sidebar with this upcoming game is that Cohen’s old team just play Detroit so will be interesting to see if we can put up more points on Detroit than the Rams are able to. Will Liam’s version of this system be more successful? Hmmmm
If we put 30 plus on Detroit, Cohen will start heading towards that offensive genius label the media loves to put on new, creative OCs.
