Liam Coen: Scoring (Lots Of) Points Is An “Expectation”
September 13th, 2024Dave Canales believed in running up the middle whether he had the right horses to do that or not.
Liam Coen believes in putting the ball across the goal line. And he thinks he has the horses to do just that.
The old Bucs offensive coordinator boasted how he was stubborn about running up the middle. The only thing the new Bucs coordinator, Coen, seems stubborn about is the need to score points. Yesterday at One Buc Palace, Coen was asked if he thought the Bucs could be one of the higher-scoring teams in the league.
“I think it’s an expectation, it’s a standard, it’s what we want to do,” Coen said. “I get pretty frustrated when we have to punt or settle for a field goal, personally, but that’s just all of us being competitors.
“Games like [Detroit] – we’re going up in a hostile environment against a very quality opponent – what is the expectation? The expectation is still to continue to put points on the board and score every possession.”
Is this refreshing? The Bucs have an offensive coordinator who doesn’t want to shove a square peg in a round hole. A guy who doesn’t think an offense is some weird test of manhood and swordsmanship.
You can throw all the crazy stats you want at Joe, but there is really only one stat that counts. The scoreboard. Who has the most points?
That’s cool if a team can run for 200 yards and then pose at midfield like Macho Man Savage with Elizabeth on his shoulder. If you don’t have more points on the scoreboard at the end of the game, all the muscle-flexing and woofing and carrying on doesn’t mean jack squat.
Score! If that means passing, OK. If that means running, OK. Whatever it takes. Score.
Football really is a simple game that way.

Always say lots of ways to win in the NFL. There are so many different ways to be an excellent offense or defense.
The simple minded, you have to have a good running game to win a Super Bowl has been proven wrong over and over again.
Or you have to have an elite outside edge rusher to win at a high level has been proven wrong again and again.
We just have to be the best version of this team to compete at the highest level and then be one of the healthier teams at the end of the year to have a chance.
We certainly seem to have the coaching to win it all.

I have a funny feeling this will be an old fashioned shoot out. Quite possibly the last one to hold the ball, wins kind of game.

Joe … ‘Score points! If that means passing, OK. If that means running, OK. Whatever it takes. Score. Football really is a simple game that way.’
That really is the only bottom line that means ‘jack squat’. Having the offensive capability to attack the defense’s weaknesses, be they defending the run or defending the pass (or both), is a beautiful thing. This Sunday’s our chance to show all the doubters that this offense can go toe-to-toe with the big boys.

Just think if we add one component to the defense, a TJ Watts type defensive end to our defense, Bam💥, hands down, we’re Super Bowl bound. We did it on the offensive side of the ball with Brady so just flip the coin. Quit expecting, anticipating, wishing, hoping, n crossing ur fingers for JTS to be someone he’s not,or do something for over five years that he hasn’t done. “Insanity”.
Had we picked up Hassan Reddick, he would have had multiple sacks on Jayden Daniels or forced him to run into the hands of VV, or forced erratic throws.

I wasn’t sure what to make of Coen. I like the first glance. Fingers crossed he remains adaptable and can find his rhythm as opposing coaches try to build a book on him.

The Best Defense is a Good Offense.

It is absolutely refreshing! Can’t wait to see more.

Well now I feel we have a chance on Sunday with all the injuries on our defense.
Bowles has evolved. Let’s F Bake!!!!!!!

As you always emphasize Joe. It’s all about production. And production = Points.

Very refreshing!

The most important thing is still to score more points than the other team

I like em already! What better way to wake up the National football world than to try and put up 40 against their beloved Super Bowl contenders! F Detroit

Time will tell but Canales was wrong all along. Baker made dave look good and Bryce just aint that good. The good news is Dave made generational wealth and took it from a terrible owner.

This is going to be fun, hopefully the Bucs have more fun. The lion’s are no joke but neither are we. In my opinion the injuries we be a tall task for us to overcome on our defense. Shoot out baby. Let’s Bake love it.

New Bucs win 37 – 20 / Panthers lose 47 – 10. Hmmmm. I wonder which coach the Bucs want?

+27, Coach. Hey, how about mauling the Aints one day, 50-0? I know, one can dream….

This appears to be a solid combo with Bowles & Coen. I think they will feed off each other. Coen asking if we’re in four down territory real time says it all. That’s Coen rubbing off on Bowles. Don’t underestimate the power of suggestion. Simply asking the question plants the seed in Todd’s conservative game plan head. That 80’s brand of football, run the ball, control the clock, and play field position, isn’t going to cut it with today’s rules. I sense Todd’s building trust with Coen, and as a result, has a new perspective on the offense.

It will be awesome if they can do it every week.
Then again, against the worst defense in football, they still left a lot of points on the field, kicking short FGs.
The Lions, still a low-end defense, will still be a big step up from what the Redskins were doing. Hopefully it all goes well and they can put up 37 again, because I think the Lions are going to score 35.

Smashsq, I have been thinking that, too. With Bowles listening to Coen as he explains the offense, and Coen hearing what goes on in the defense it sounds SO good. Of course, that is true only if Coen is as good as we think. IF we get an OC genius, collaborating with Bowles, and we get and stay healthy–BOAT PARADE!!

Rod Munch- 56 yards is a short field goal???
Shut your wizened bag of bones up. You have some of the worst comments on this site. Sheesh.
