How Angry Are The Bucs?

September 11th, 2024

Todd Bowles said today there’s nothing to think about last season’s Bucs-Lions playoff game, no big helpfuly takeaway, because it has nothing to do with the Bucs’ trip to Detroit on Sunday?

Baker Mayfield doesn’t seem to agree.

Asked about “unfinished business” with the Lions from last season, Mayfield said that feeling is within the team long before it will depart on Saturday’s charter flight.

“You can definitely sense it already within our building, when you put up the personnel, the game wreckers, the scouting report, all that, and you talk about the atmosphere and the memories instantly pop up,” Mayfield said of Sunday’s matchup. “And our guys are ready. You know, it’s obviously a topic of conversation that they ended our year, one that we’ve been looking forward to.”

Joe really wonders how angry for revenge the Bucs are? If the team has adopted the mentality of its head coach, like most good teams do, then it’s unlikely there’s that kind of angry fire in the Bucs when it comes to Sunday’s game.

That’s not saying the Bucs won’t have competitive fire, just that they might not be running with their hair on fire because Detroit ended their Super Bowl run last season.

Also, a Week 2 road game after a comfortable home win, makes it harder for Joe to believe the Bucs will be salivating like rabid dogs come Sunday.

Time will tell.

Joe so wishes this Sunday’s game against Detroit wasn’t going to be with the Bucs missing defensive tackle Calijah Kancey (calf) and safety Antoine Winfield, Jr. (ankle).

Christian Izien will replace Winfield and the Bucs will use Greg Gaines a lot in Kancey’s role, as they did Sunday against Washington.

  1. Baker Bowl Says:

I hope we put up 1000 yards on Carlton Davis alone

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

Our secondary will be the difference. The Lions only have 1 game of film to analyze Coen’s offense and Coen still had fresh plays/schemes to catch the Lions off guard. Bucs 34 Lions 31

  3. BakerFan Says:

Pundits put Lions in the Top 5. Going in there and beating them will put the league on notice. No damn excuses this year, either play to win or mail it in.

  4. Beeej Says:

CD3 gonna cover ME13? Will be epic

  5. Pewter Power Says:

I wish my Bucs the best but sometimes it just doesn’t matter. I’m sure they’ve been mad at the niners the last few years too. We won’t win without a run game to eat up clock

  6. PSL Bob Says:

Even without the injuries, I think the Bucs would be the underdogs. With the injuries, everyone will put their nickel on Detroit. Time to surprise folks. LFG!

  7. Idroolpewter&red Says:

I’ll be pleasantly surprised if we go up there and win given our banged up defense. I was chalking this one up as a loss before the season started, but who knows? Maybe Coen’s offense can make the game a track meet. Should be fun to watch, regardless of who wins.

  8. RVATom Says:

Gonna be tough with the personnel losses for sure. We will see how the coaching has or hasn’t improved. If the Bucs stay competitive throughout the game I’ll be real happy. No excuses not to win. Pros vs pros even if it’s backups. Coaches vs coaches. Gameplan vs gameplan. They have to execute. If they can pull off a win at DET they have made tremendous improvements. Be fun to watch.

  9. Boss Says:

CD3 will get his pick this week and will have no problem covering mike. cd knows mike…..

just let him run free early on to drop the ball and jump routes towards the end zone. can not believe other have not.

I notice so many short throws to the sidelines. they better be careful of those pick 6’s

  10. HC Grover Says:

Coen may be the edge we need.

  11. BucU Says:

So we now know officially Kancey won’t be playing again?

  12. Mike C Says:

CD3 will look like he did against the Texans, lost and burnt.

  13. JA Says:

    Test time for the Bucs.
Washington will not be good this year, but the Lions will.
Game 1 was a perfect matchup for Coen’s new offense, and his game plan passed with flying colors.
The Lions blew a 17-3 lead against the Rams last Sunday, eventually winning in overtime. They can be had, and I still think the 49’ers are a better team than the Lions.
Yeah, it’s only Week 2, but if Bowles doesn’t have a sour taste in his mouth from last year’s season ending loss, I wonder about him (as I often do).
Unless the Lions implode, ala last year’s Eagles, they will be a top NFL team.
    Looking forward to this one.

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t fool yourselves fellow Buc fans. Detroit is a very good team. And its going to take and even better game than our last to defeat them in Detroit. Bucs will be ready. But it is going to take a monumental effort on our part. I hope we win. Just don’t be shocked if we don’t.

  15. BucsfaninOregon Says:

I’ll say what JA wont: The Bucs will likely lose. The Lions are a complete team that still are POed about missing the SB last year. We have improved primarily on the offense. We were already showing significant vulnerability in pre-season and last year. Now we have injuries on this vulnerable defense. Combined with home field and rabid fans (they don’t beaches to tempt on game day) they SHOULD win. But, hope springs eternal- -I’ll be watching and hoping I’m wrong.

  16. BucsfaninOregon Says:

    “already showing significant DEFENSIVE vulnerability”

  17. WilieG Says:

The Bucs are going to have to rely on their offense for awhile. I think they need to score 30+ points this game.

  18. DaRealist727 Says:

So what’s the deal with Kancy, because it hasn’t even been published that he is out for sure this week. You dropping info prematurely or do you have insider knowledge and had a slip of the fingers?

  19. Matt_PcAfee Says:

If the Bucs pull this one out I’ll listen to T Wrights podcast

  20. Matt_PcAfee Says:

    Angry Bucs play better!

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Angry is not as good as focused…but what we really need is a couple of breaks…. Turnovers…kick or punt return….

  22. JustVisiting Says:

I suspect that Baker’s personality will drive this, more than Bowles’.

  23. Buccos Says:

Side note- Devin White already lost his starting role in Philly. Back to the bench

  24. Jw94buc Says:

A call to all Bucs fans!!! Let’s not get to high over a week one win. Let us also not get to high on a week 2 win or loss. Takes the season into four game quarters each four game equals one quarter of the season. Try not to lose more than 1 game a quarter. And please let us not get over confident or cocky. Just be quiet take the loss and criticism into account but never show your hand. It’s like poker. Stay the course. And by god Let’s chip away at the stone. Get another championship back to the Licht house! I believe in this team I have since I was 8 years old. love all the Bucs fans! Cheers to a great season!

  25. Bojim Says:

Sh** Joe. We got this. Said last year. Baker gives the Bucs an identity. And… I like it. Kick some behind.

  26. unbelievable Says:

Joe so wishes this Sunday’s game against Detroit wasn’t going to be with the Bucs missing defensive tackle Calijah Kancey (calf) and safety Antoine Winfield, Jr. (ankle).

You and me both, Joe. Detroit is a WAY better team than Washington.

Would love to see us be the bullies for a change, but I fear that’s probably just wishful thinking.

  27. Citrus County Says:

This game against the Lions could be as much about coaching as it is the players. Todd Bowles could get a major boost in recognition and respect if he prevails in this duel.

  28. SB Says:

With our Defensive injuries we are just going to have to outscore them

    “Simple as that” 😊

Never factual, always negative, increasingly boring takes.

  30. SB Says:

Hey Boss. You do realize that CD3 couldn’t cover Mike in practice when he already knew the offense right??

  31. A Bucs Fan Says:

Luke Goedeke is in the concussion protocol too! Not good.

  32. WiseCrack Says:

If someone made those same backhanded unwarrented comments about the Hoe’s that they just made about Todd. Well I think them might just be fighten words.

Look, you don’t have a decent playing career as a defensive back, WHILE BEING A LOW-KEY DJ at night, followed by being, NOT “a” defensive coordinator but THE defensive coordinator that kept, (not) Myhommie out of the end zone in the Super Bowl. Followed by consecutive DIVISION TITTLES and a team eye another one and more. By being as you describe Joe.

Your get the virtual Will Smith. Get his name out yo mouth Fools

  33. SenileSenior Says:

I like what Dewey Selmon said.

Boss is a troll, l think.

    Go Bucs!!

  34. Dave Pear Says:

    40 burger for the win.

  35. SenileSenior Says:

We need to keep the Lions’ offense off the field. We need to dominate the time of possession with a lot of short passes and a good running game. Keeping them from scoring with our banged up defense is a tall order. They will not overlook us.

    Go Bucs!

  36. JimBobBuc Says:

Hopefully the Lions will come out a little flat after their grudge win against the Rams. The Bucs need to take advantage and score early and often, and somehow hang on when Detroit wakes up.

  37. SlyPirate Says:

    DON’T GET TOO EXCITED
The Bucs are down 5 starters on defense. That’s almost half the starting defense and arguably the best players. That’s a lot to overcome.

The offense will need to outscore the Lions. That will be tough.

  38. Pryda…sec147 Says:

    Let’s goooo Chaaad and Bucky

  39. Gipper Says:

Lions have the best O line in the NFL. Defense somehow has to get ball back and avoid long possessions. Bucs have an exciting offense but they need to get on the field. Detroit is built to get ahead and then control ball and clock. It is going to be an uphill battle with defense injuries. Hope offense plays loose. Baker not going to get a lot of time with Hutchison applying pressure. Need quick hitting passes and screens to slow Hutchinson down.

  40. Alstott40 Says:

Evans will burn Davis the entire game if he’s not ruled out due to injury of course being he’s always fragile.
Boss is a Dixie chick fan

  41. Darin Says:

Let’s hope bowles fights to the finish this time! Have bowseys ballsy’s dropped?!?!

  42. ATLBuc Says:

I feel good about Sunday’s game. Because we have injuries our guys, especially subs, will be super focused. On the other hand, Detroit will view our injuries and be complacent. It’s human nature. By the time the pull it together, it will be too late. 38-21 Bucs

Don’t you hear. believe everything you hear. The people who said that are the same ones that said the Falcons are going to win the division. Sunday, Goff got sacked twice behind that line by the Aaron Donaldless Rams.

  44. Wild Bill Says:

Detroit has to be favored. The win last week was great but Detroit will be a much tougher foe. The Bucs are good enough to have a chance but it’s likely a slim chance. Very tough opponent and away from home. Odds have to favor Rams. But hope burns eternal in us Bucaroo fans!!

  45. Defense Rules Says:

Will Bill … ‘Detroit will be a much tougher foe. The Bucs are good enough to have a chance but it’s likely a slim chance.’

Bucs chances certainly go down as our injuries go up. But I’ll tell you what gives me hope: Lions game last week against the Rams.

Yes the Lions won 26-20 … in overtime. But the Rams could’ve beaten them with just a tiny bit of luck. Rams won the regulation TOP 34:56 to 25:04 and would’ve won if the Lions hadn’t scored a FG to tie it in the last 20 secs of the game (then win it in OT by winning the toss & running the ball down the Rams’ throats for a TD).

Of importance to us, Detroit ran it 31 times in that game for 163 yards (5.3 YPC) & 2 rushing TDs. Their passing game was OK (18-of-28 for 217 passing yards & 1 TD, 1 INT & they took 2 sacks). The Rams actually controlled the game IMO with their passing game (34-of-49 for 319 yards with 1 TD, 1 INT & they also took 2 sacks). Their running game was just meh however (23 runs for 83 yards with 1 TD).

My bet would be that the Lions will try to duplicate that game plan against the Bucs: run it on right around 50% of the plays, and possibly more if we have trouble stopping them. Then let Goff slice & dice us with the short passing game once we focus too much on stopping the run. Bucs best chance to beat them IMO is to favor our passing game initially, and use it to set up the running game to keep them off-balance.

  46. orlbucfan Says:

Sure would like to see the Offense and Special Teams play their A++ game and help out the Defense for once. The Lions crib will be packed and loud but the Bucs are used to it. It will be a statement game, and if Detroit gets too full of themselves thinking they’re playing cupcakes, they’ll lose. Go Cardiac Bucs!!

  47. Badbucs Says:

Exactly DR. Detroit will be able to use the short passing game all day long. We’re too soft to stop the underneath stuff. We might slow the running game though if we sell out to stop it and give them the pass. Our hope is to get a turnover or two and match offense. I don’t think our defense can do anything but slow them down. It could get ugly fast with all the subs playing. Always a prayer though. Go Bucs!

  48. 941Boltsfan Says:

Gotta stop The Lions run game!!
