Diverse Contributions Excited Jason Licht

September 11th, 2024

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Remember that asute postgame take by former Bucs defensive back Logan Ryan?

It seems Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht has the same thought.

Ryan noted that all the Bucs’ big-money free agents re-signed this offseason played well on Sunday in Week 1. That’s got to be comforting to the organization.

And it feels better when it’s complemented by rookies and young players rising up.

“It wasn’t about making a statement,” Licht said about the 37-20 beatdown of Washington, “but it felt good to get the contributions that we did from young players and then also, you know, the players that we had just re-signed, our core players. All of them had big games. So it was good to see.

“You know, it’s also good to see that there’s a lot of room to grow, too. We did score a lot of points. We had a lot of success, but there’s a lot of things that we can improve on. And believe it or not, that’s kind of exciting to know — that it wasn’t the finished product.”

Licht’s comments came yesterday on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

The Bucs rolled with double-digit rookies on the roster last season. On Sunday, their first five draft picks of 2024 played a lot of snaps, and all three on offense — Graham Barton, Bucky Irving and Jalen McMillan — made major contributions.

Exciting times.

    Talk about Diverse Contributions.

Go watch the interview Cam Brate just did with the Bucs QB and Media Girl.

He may just be The Next GMC

    Take a bow Licht!

  4. SB~LV Says:

Clearly demonstrates how important it is to make the right selections.
A common denominator I have noticed is how articulate these picks are which speaks to their intelligence, perfect combination of athletic ability and smarts.

The recent several drafts have added talent and depth at several positions. The season is long and we already see some of that depth paying off as injuries arise. Keep up the great work JL!

    CRAZY TIMES …

The Bucs injury report is bananas long. The Bucs have no business beating the Lions with 4-7 starters on defense sitting out. But what if they do? What if the Bucs beat a healthy top 2 team in the NFC?

Personally, I’ll feel it’s Super Bowl or bust.

  7. A Bucs Fan Says:

Logan Hall is back practicing today. Zyon is practicing in a non-contact jersey. Josh Hayes and Callijah Kancey are not participating.

Also Keenan Isaac returned to the Bucs today!

    Good stuff.

If we’re being really nit picky- I don’t think Wirfs had that great of game… hopefully he was just shaking off the rust.

Jason definitely drafted very well. “It’s not the finished product!” So excited for our next game against the Lions. Go Bucs!

  10. A Bucs Fan Says:

Wirfs problem Sunday was two fold. I have no doubt in my mind he is playing hurt. Secondarily his at least 30lbs lighter this season. Early return is that the weight loss is negatively impacting his ability anchor (exasperated by his bad ankle).

  11. Trask To The Future Says:

The Offense will get a real test against the Lions. We’ll really see how good they are or aren’t. Washington having the worst D in the NFL last season isn’t the best test.

Our D will struggle with all the injuries.

Lions most likely win by 14-17 points because of all of our injuries. We won’t be able to stop their Offense. Their D is good enough to get some stops on us and so we won’t be able to keep scoring wise.

  12. Buc4evr Says:

Think Coen will do a good job game planning against the agressive Lion D. Lots of things you can do to make that defense over commit. Think our offense will do well, just hope they can score enough points to save the Defense. Still think we should re-sign Shaq and sign Howard to a one year deal..

  13. BucU Says:

Still no practicing for the paper tiger Kancey?

  14. Win in the Trenches Says:

Not sure how defenders returned to the Washinton Commanders defense, But last year they were ranked 4th Overall : ” AI Overview

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), the Washington Commanders’ defense ranked in the following categories for the 2023 season:
    Overall defense: Fourth
    Run defense: Third
    Pass rush: Tenth
    Coverage: Seventh
Rushing the passer: Least often in the NFL, at 29.3% ”

So not a bad test overall

With our D beat to a pulp, we have no shot right? Hmmmm – pressure is on the Lions.

  16. Ed Says:

I think the Bucs offense is much improved over last year just by adding Irving, Barton and MacMillan and we put up 23 points but were outscored with Lions putting up 31.

From what I have seen of this offense if we don’t make mistakes like penalties when we get in the red zone, we should expect 25-30 points every game because very few teams in the NFL have veteran receivers like Evans/Godwin and a rookie who looks like a vet in MacMillan. With Godwin and Evans chris-crossing in the 10-20 yard routes, those 30-35 yard routes that MacMillan and Palmer will run will be open at least 3-4 times a game. They just need to execute and pass protect.

Defensively I don’t have the same feeling about them, they are not deep enough on the line and not having Kancey means they have to play Will Ghoulston more and he’s older. Vea has to be in Goff’s face, pressure has to come up the middle. If Goff has passing lanes he will pick on Zion or his replacement. I believe our guys can control the run. Its the pass that is the concern.

  17. ocala Says:

Incredible drafting by the Bucs has put this franchise in a very good place.
Bucs roster, just like every other roster in the NFL has some positions that need more depth, but the Bucs are going to be able to draft primarily for depth next year which is pretty rare in the NFL.

  18. Kenton Smith Says:

I’ve written here before about my trip to Detroit last January. The Lions were coming off a 1st round win over the Rams there at Detroit. Their fans were ravenous. They exuded confidence. Like any craft ( like football ) confidence comes from practice. With our new OC we have a plan to practice. Precise grinding execution and tempo. We weren’t as confident last year as the Lions were. We are this year. And the good news is I think we are better. Better skill position players. Now they’ve got a good O – line but ours is good and getting better. Detroit runs it well but I’m more concerned about Goff getting hot. No Matter. I’d be surprised if we don’t win this game. Because we’re just a little bit better.

  19. JimBobBuc Says:

The offensive rookies have done well, so now it’s time for our defensive rookies(Braswell, Tykee) to make plays. Who knows, maybe Coen has something planned for Dev Culp?

  20. J Says:

Man, if we beat Detroit, I’m going to be very excited to see this finished product.
