Bucs GM Compares Rachaad White To Bucky Irving

September 11th, 2024

“Bucky, man, you hear that? I’m a glider.”

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht assessed his 2024 running game after Tampa Bay’s glorious Week 1 victory.

The chatter came on The Todd Bowles Show yesterday on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

Licht did not start chanting, “Buh-Key!, Buh-Key!, Buh-Key!” like fans did on Sunday, but Licht acknowledged that Bucs faithful are picking up on rookie Bucky Irving’s explosive running style.

“With Bucky, he’s a very direct runner, instantly sees things, and I think the fans are seeing that — we were seeing it in training camp,” Licht said. “And then Rachaad [White] with his style, more of a glider but very, very good in the passing game. And then, you know, leaving out Sean Tucker, who had an oustanding preseason as well. If he was forced into action, I think we would all be very, very impressed with him as well.

“I think with the fresh ideas with the new scheme, it’s coming together very quick. We have an excellent offensive line coach … Everything’s just coming together. I don’t think we’ve seen the best yet.”

Licht went on to reference “marked improvement for Cody [Mauch] and then Luke [Goedeke], as well.”

Joe is excited about the Bucs potentially having an improved rushing attack.

After Week 1, Tampa Bay ranks 24th in the NFL in yards per carry, which is an encouraging sign after the Bucs ranked last in the league the past two seasons.

If we can crack the top 20 in rushing, with out passing game, this will truly be a top 10 offense.
And, it will need to be with our hobbled Defense.

So when is the article coming that tells us Callijah Kancey and Logan Hall will be out indefinitely? You know that’s coming down the pipe any time now.
Joe already wrote this. https://www.joebucsfan.com/2024/09/bad-news-on-calijah-kancey-and-logan-hall/ –Joe

I think Bucky has the better running vision based upon early reviews and that may be the most important thing for a running back when running the ball.

I do not though see breakaway speed for Bucky or the ability to break tackles which also seemed to be what we were sold on draft day. Seems like a strong draft choice. Let’s just not put him as a future stud.

I thought Goedeke had a pretty good year last year. I think one of his and Rachaad White’s worst games in pass protect last year was in the Lions playoff game. I think Rachaad was responsible for two of the sacks allowed.

If we can stop those big plays from the Detroit defense with improvement from those two guys, I am not sure why Baker and the offense cannot be just as productive against Detroit.

My big concern is that Detroit offensive line is so run blocking elite, they may just run it down our throat without Kancey and Hall. 31 to 28 Bucs.

When the running game is most important is at the end of a game you are trying to ice. After the Panthies cut the lead to 30-14, there were still 11 minutes and change on the clock. The Bucs proceeded to go on a nearly 8 minute TD drive to ice the game, leaning heavily on a successful run game.

    Bravo for 37 points.

#TotallyTransformedTodd. Looking for the 50 burger.

Bucs will clog the run lanes with Vita Gholston and Gaines. Funderburk will pick-six Goff. It’s going to be a good day.

  7. Beeej Says:

Even with Hainsey at center, Bucs run game was much improved by season’s end. Had 15 carries for 89 yards in the Detroit game, White 9 for 55

Looking forward in seeing Funderburk play CB. I think he going to be a starter in this league. He reminds me of the same potential Zyon McCollum had last year. Both CBs run in the 4.3s.

  9. A Bucs Fan Says:

@AlabamaBucsfan – I would mostly agree with that comparison! Although, I think Funderburk is a better football player now than Zyon, who is a superior athlete, was when he entered the league.

    COMPARING IS FUN …

    Worst Rushing Offense in 2023
    Buccaneers

    Worst Rushing Offense in 2024
    Panthers

18 RB, including Bucky, have more rushing yards than Carolina.

White is a Glider, ok fine, keep throwing him the ball, does very well there.

But it is night and day compared to when he takes a handoff, he does not look at all what he looks like when catching passes out of the backfield, where White excels

What about having Bucky and White on the filed at the same time?

Maybe run a pro style 2 backs set, with Bucky and White split behind the QB, to get both involved on a majority of the plays.

  12. Baking with Coen Says:

I like having both together on the field. As we continue to improve the offense will create nightmares to our opposing DC. This will be a fun development to watch.

    LFBake!!!

  13. unbelievable Says:

Our running backs were tackled in the backfield on 7 of our 24 rushing plays.

That’s almost 1/3 of our runs.

    Gotta clean that up.

  14. Bobby M. Says:

    Irving reminds me of Dunn.

  15. GoneGator Says:

    More of a “glider” ?
Obviously Jason, by saying that, is insinuating Bucky is the vastly superior runner and RW is NOT a good running back but he is a good reciever. Read between the lines Becky LOL

  16. Bojim Says:

It will be a good year. Even if we don’t win the division, we’re gonna see some special things. I feel good. As I do every year. lol. But have a good feeling.

  17. tommy twotone Says:

bucky is the best rb prospect i have seen since james wilder. lets get him the ball coach.

  18. Kno One Says:

Bucky Irving’s yards per carry are better than 24th..he’s at 6.9 right now..pretty sure that makes him the 2nd RB in the league right now..only behind the Miami RB Achane who’s at 7.3…we’ll see how long he can keep that number up,but great job in week 1!
