Bucs’ Baker Mayfield Is A Better Version Of Baker Mayfield

September 10th, 2024

Reborn by the Bay.

Sunday there was a big spotlight on all the big-named rookie quarterbacks making their first starts.

Joe gets it.

But since the spotlight was bright on the rookies, football numbers cruncher Shawn Syed of Sumer Sports (that’s the stats outfit run by former Dixie Chicks shot-caller Thomas Dimitroff) decided to focus on the NFL’s veteran quarterbacks.

He ranked the top-five games of the veteran quarterbacks. Syed had Baker Mayfield’s four-touchdown game as the third-best. And Syed seems to say Mayfield may now be the quarterback many thought he could be.

In other words, he’s grown up with the Bucs.

The Baker Mayfield project has seen multiple iterations. From Cleveland to Los Angeles to emerging anew in Tampa Bay, Mayfield has reinvented himself. He is better at avoiding sacks, is making better decisions, and can help Mike Evans hit another 1,000-yard season. Liam Coen impressed in his debut as the Buccaneers offensive coordinator with some improvements in the run game, but Mayfield gets the high marks for Tampa Bay.

That’s all pretty much spot on. While the Bucs don’t expect Mayfield to put up Tom Brady numbers — though he can occasionally — the Bucs like Mayfield’s moxie — there’s that word again. He showed a lot of that on Sunday.

Mayfield in his past eight games (including two playoff games) has 20 touchdowns thrown and just 4 picks. That’s a helluva ratio and a helluva run.

If Mayfield maintains that touchdown-to-pick ratio, the Bucs will win a bunch of games.

Mayfield had better day last year vs Green Bay than Washington Sunday. He was great in both games. Losing Canales was strength by subtraction. He continually put offense in bad position of 3rd and long by up the middle runs on 1st and 2nd down. For all the remaining doubters, Mayfield outplayed Joe Burrow in 4 head to head games with CLE. One game he had 24 straight completions and 5TD’s. The Browns organization is run by an inherited wealth, rich guy who continually shoots himself in the foot. The Bucs have a solid organization with Glazers, Licht and Coach Bowles. The best is yet to come for Bucs and Baker.

  2. Beeej Says:

Baker has had superior coaching since he left Cleveland and Carolina

    LFBake!!!

  4. Kenton Smith Says:

Mayfield had the third best game of all the veteran QBs last week ? What idiot wrote that ?

  5. Durango 95 Says:

Baker is an exciting player to watch. He’s entertaining as all get-out. The way he escapes those collapsing pockets is just fun to watch. It’s Mayfield Houdini! Thought he had more room to run on that play but after watching it again looks like he didn’t have as much room to run as I thought he did.

  6. SB~LV Says:

    His potential has arrived!
    Should be fun to watch!

  7. Buddha Says:

DVOA kingmaker Schatz reported numbers listing Baker as top QB in week 1. Also Baker only 4th QB to put up 4 touchdowns and QB rating above 140 within first seven years of his career. Aaron Rodgers last one to do it. Famed Cleveland morning sports talk broadcaster went ballistic on a rant about how Cleveland’s release of. Baker set back the franchise for the next decade

  8. Kenton Smith Says:

Could anyone tell me please if they’ve ever seen anyone chuck 4 tds out of 30 total passes. I’ve never seen that happen before except maybe Mayfield. God he’s lucky to have found Tampa. Please please settle in for 7 or 8 years.

  9. Casual Observer Says:

We’re lucky to have him. Stay healthy.

  10. Dave Pear Says:

Meanwhile in Carolina…….it wasn’t even halftime of the Aints-Panthies game and fans were calling for the Lunatic Tepper to fire Canalwater. Bryce Young’s first pass was a horrible over the middle overthrown pick. QB whisperer my arse.

It’s good to be a Bucs fan this week.

I SEE YOU. I see what you’re doing and I like it. You must be a long time Joe Bucs Fan reader. You won’t make Joe an optimist, and the entire Bucs fan base is always ready for the other shoe to drop. I haven’t read “Decade of Depression” for a long time. I’m giving you the credit. Keep riding the wave and sending out good vibes.

  12. BucsGuy Says:

Baker was the best QB last week amongst all QBs without a doubt. Third best? I’m sure he probably had Mahomes up there just because

  13. BucsfaninOregon Says:

Canales got a job as head coach because everybody thinks he “fixed” Baker. Baker fixed Baker. Canales will flame out in Carolina and be gone in 2 years. If Baker does not get hurt he will be Pro-Bowl again.

  14. orlbucfan Says:

Joe calls it moxie. I call it feisty. Same thing, plus BM plays like he’s got something to prove. That’s the play where BM could have run in and scored. 7 instead of 3. The Offensive Line blocking on that Left Side is unreal. Can’t wait to see what Coen dreams up for Motown Sunday. Go Cardiac Bucs!!

  15. heyjude Says:

Baker found his perfect fit with the Bucs and we are so lucky to have him. Nice reminder video of his scrimmages out of the pocket. Loved it. Baker has always been moxie. Never forget the commercials. orlbucfan is also right. Baker is feisty too.

  16. BakerFan Says:

Baker Haters have to hate this…. In fact, they have been pretty quite except for the occasional “it was Washington”

Did Baker have that middling type of game…..I bet some moron will say yeah.

Baker Bois running naked through the streets.

  20. Cobraboy Says:

Third best last week? Who was better?

  21. Jp09 Says:

Baker and the offense were damn near perfect. Who did he rank above Baker?

The game against the Lions is where Bake with the rest of the Bucs can shut the media up and force them to start respecting Tampa. These are the games where we need our big money players to step up. If they want the accolades, these are the games you have to win. Nobody cares that you beat Washington.

Shock the world Sunday, Go Bucs!

  22. Gipper Says:

There are still a few crybabies who have memorized their talking points—-“Baker bois” and other derogatory name calling. These guys claim they need “more evidence.” Bucs and Baker are going to struggle with Lions but they will make it entertaining. Lions have the best O line in football and Hutchison on defense is a beast.

  25. Rod Munch Says:

You might want to hold up on the throwing your shoulder out of joint from patting yourself on the backs and keep in mind this was, by far, the worst defense in football last year giving up over 30 points a game, and now playing a new scheme, etc.

Baker played great, but this was by far the worst defense the Bucs will play this year – even if the Redskins improve, in week 1 they were terrible.

From the Bucs side they did what you want to do, they beat up on a bad team – but hold off on booking the SB parade for a bit and lets see how they do against some NFL caliber defenses.

  26. Saskbucs Says:

    1st overall pick
Took Browns to playoffs for first time in over 2 decades and got a win.
Spent the next year playing hurt and for some rough coaches.
Went to the most inept franchise currently in the league.

Then came to a SB winning culture and system, healthy… plays like a 1st overall pick again. Who would have thought!?
