Film Study On How Graham Barton Has Unleashed The Run Game

September 10th, 2024

“Graham, watch how you blow up Bobby Wagner.”

On Saturday, Joe brought to light a video Jon Gruden made where he claimed Bucs center Graham Barton could be “Offensive Rookie of the Year.” Chucky was so impressed with his preseason tape.

In breaking down the Bucs’ win over the Commandos on Sunday, former NFL offensive lineman and good friend and workout partner of Bucs defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, Brian Baldinger pretty much agreed with everything Chucky said.

With Barton at center, Chucky said, the rookie would allow the Bucs to run better to the second level of the defense because Barton is so athletic and strong. Baldinger noted that showed up on All-22.

Baldinger the Bucs now have an instant running attack with Barton. And for Baldinger, it wasn’t just Barton but Cody Mauch, too, though Barton was the ring leader.

In one particular play, Baldinger loved how Barton locked up Bobby Wagner allowing Rachaad White to get extra yards. That is exactly the kind of play Chucky cited would happen when Barton takes out a linebacker.

Fun stuff here from the NFL Network analyst.

    Love to hear it 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

  2. garro Says:

Bravo Baldinger! Tell it my man! You too Chucky! Chucky wishes he had guys like Mauch and Barton. Those two dudes showed up to kick some tail Sunday!

    Go Bucs!

  3. A Bucs Fan Says:

How is it that the football people says Barton did great and the PFF slaps him with a 50 grade. Doesn’t make sense.

  4. heyjude Says:

Love hearing all this. So happy we have Graham. And seeing his huge smile after the replay on Sunday was priceless. Good stuff!

  5. Baking with Coen Says:

    We got this!!!!
    LFB!!!!

  6. Nick2 Says:

Can we finally say Hainsey is a great backup and only good in the passing game?

  7. BucU Says:

Graham is a future All-Pro. Probably way sooner than later.

  8. Leighroy Says:

The “the interior OL sucks” crowd is suspiciously quiet this week. I’m not saying those trolls are gone forever, but it sure is nice to have a respite.

  9. WhatTheBuc Says:

    But..but ..but… Hainsey.

  10. Buccos Says:

    Damn son

  11. Buc Nutty Says:

Enough trashing the oline. The W front is legit. Boys held up!

Keep it up. Gonna need you to carry the team.

  12. EssexBuccaneer Says:

So we’re accepting that the o-line was the problem last year after all? And not the backs?

    Who’d have thunk it?!

  13. Beeej Says:

Baldy has an excellent breakdown of that huge run of Bucky’s–there were 3 separate things that HAD to go right, and all 3 did

  14. Captain Canuck Says:

That is some incredible work by the rookie Graham Barton. Baldy has done at least a couple breakdowns of Barton already. Fantastic technique, and is basically picking up the position at the NFL level as he hasn’t played C since his Freshmen year at Duke.

Bucs fans should be thanking the Packers for passing on him at #25 to pick Jordan Morgan.

A few of the podcasts after some after of the early practices, the Joe’s and Ira were very concerned that he wouldn’t start at C or G on this very poor interior O-line (c’mon man)….it is very early, but the ceiling appears to be very high for 62 (Pro-Bowl/All Pro potentially).

Also, one of the Joe’s also said in podcast leading up to draft podcast you do not draft a C in the 1st rd. Hmmmmmm 😉

  15. Mike Says:

Like what I saw from the O-Line and the run game. Let’s keep it up Bucs!

  16. Dave Pear Says:

Baker was pressured occasionally but for the most part he could’ve knitted a sweater back there. The negative runs illustrate that the new blocking schemes are a work in progress, but the explosives and the screen game show the OL is already much improved.

Keep adding the beef, Jason. Every year.

  17. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

I think it sounds like the new guy in town doing his job well is also making those around him better. You know the old saying one bad apple no pun intended, well let’s reverse it to one good apple making those around him better. I saw Barton handling his business and think maybe Cody only had to worry about his job. I thought by hearing Hainsey’s own words about not being ready to jump in that spot when Jensen went down. The centers job entails a lot more than just snapping the ball. It’s really pivotal to the production of the line. I think that the piling up of these injuries is gonna hurt us bad, unless we can sack the QB real quick on every snap. Go Bucs!!!!

  18. SlyPirate Says:

    AND I WANTED VERSE

I really wanted the Bucs to draft FSU’s Verse. LAR took him a few spots ahead of the Bucs. I watched Verse vs DET. He did nothing. Well, nothing but get stonewalled all game. He was terrible. He was slow, no moves, and if the play went his direction, the OT could easily wipe him out. Super excited to be wrong.

  19. Bucs And Them Says:

If that doesn’t fire you up, you have no pulse. We’re going to need the offense to carry us and help the defense hang in there as they try to heal up and adjust in the coming weeks. It starts with the O-line. They weren’t perfect but, they were pretty dang good for week 1 against a formidable D-line for the ‘Redskins’. Given the injuries on our defense both before the game and during, I give Bowles and the players a lot of credit for how they played. I’d lean toward using our in house young guys to step up and man up for our defense. We’ve got good defensive coaches, coach ‘em up! Going to Detroit is going to be a tough task but, we can hang with them if we play a sound mistake free game.

  20. orlbucfan Says:

You bet ego Chucky wished he had this offense. If it keeps improving, it will outdo the one that lured Methuselah Brady after the 49ers told him to take a hike. Yeah, Offensive Line and Barton!! Go get them in Motown Sunday! Hey Coen, how about calling an option QB rollout for the Feisty Bake?

  21. Jerid421 Says:

“Might as well have been throwing frisbees at Clearwater Beach” made me laugh out loud. Hahaha….

  22. ocala Says:

    @SlyPirate

I am very excited the Bucs got Barton and I think he has a solid chance to be the best center in the NFL, but Verse had a fantastic first game for the Rams. Verse had six QB pressures and a sack against the Lions.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

I really do believe that Barton is the key to making this OLine click, and they got better as the game progressed (practice makes perfect?).

Bucs ran it 15 times in the 1st half for 31 yards … 8 Right side for 24 yards, 1 Middle for 2 yards, and 6 Left for 5 yards. And in there, 4 of those runs were negative yardage TFLs (3 Left & 1 Right). Not overly effective obviously, but it was the 1st game & our big guys hadn’t gotten all that much work in the worthless preseason games.

But they came alive in the 2nd half, and everything started gelling. Not counting the 2 kneeldowns for -2 yards, Bucs ran it 13 times for 83 yards … 6 Right side for 47 yards, 3 Middle for 25 yards, and 4 Left side for 11 yards. And in there, 3 of those runs were for negative yardage TFLs (2 Left & 1 Right).

Rachaad wasn’t very effective running the ball (15 rushes for 31 yards), but he was fantastic in the passing game (6 targets, 6 receptions, 75 yards). He ran Right 8 times for 21 yards, and Left 7 times for 10 yards, but got caught behind the LOS 5 times (minus 14 yards .. 4 Left & 1 Right).

Bucky had a much better game running the ball (9 rushes for 62 yards), and did OK in the passing game (3 targets, 2 receptions, for 14 yards). He ran Right 4 times for 42 yards, up the Middle 2 times for 14 yards, and Left 3 times for 6 yards, but got caught behind the LOS 2 times (minus 8 yards .. 1 Left & 1 Right).

Baker was our most consistent runner (3 rushes for 21 yards). And he knows how to work the middle of the field … 2 runs up the Middle for 13 yards plus 1 run Right for another 8 yards. He was on fire Sunday.

Now let’s hope that we can duplicate the 2nd half of Sunday’s game several days from now up in Detroit. Our 6.4 YPC in that half was a beautiful thing.

    I was wondering that too?

  25. Joe Says:

How is it that the football people says Barton did great and the PFF slaps him with a 50 grade. Doesn’t make sense.

Maybe because football people know what they are watching?

Joe’s telling you, NFL people — the ones who call the shots, the ones who pick the players, the ones who make trades and cut and sign people — think PPF’s offensive line grades are the biggest jokes available since Sam Kinison died.

Even Belicheat has mocked them (o-line grades).

  26. Leopold Stotch Says:

Gah Leeee! I love these videos.

  27. Leopold Stotch Says:

🤦‍♂️ Oops I inadvertently used one of the Joe’s names… I’ll try again..

    GOLLY! I love these videos

  28. Stanglassman Says:

This fires me up more than anything. With this OL anything is possible. Graham is going to be a great leader of this bunch. I bet Ben B. is stoked about landing here and getting to work with a bunch of talented good dudes. Bucs should consider resigning him to a longer contract soon. I would be nice to know going forward that this same 5 is set and can grow as a unit for the next few years.

Five individual fingers are not strong but when you put them all together they form a strong fist. 👊

  29. Pickgrin Says:

Uh Oh – Baldy said “Rashaad White WILL find the daylight”….

Joe insists that White CAN’T find daylight…..

Just pondering which opinion is more credible…..

  30. stpetebucfan Says:

    @D.R.

I wonder how much of the “improved running” in the 2nd half was a part of the overall plan/goal all along.

I wasn’t at the game but it looked pretty hot and muggy. The Bucs dominated the time of possession by more than seven minutes.

Perhaps the Bucs had a game that went exactly as planned. Pound the DC’s the first half, move the chains, and score the first five possessions. THEN…start pounding the rock! Bring in fresh explosive legs and grind some time and yardage.

I felt like the Bucs could not have drawn up a result any better. Some mistake but overall they executed the plan with your favorite “complimentary” football.

  31. BuckyBuc Says:

    LET THEM COOK, GO BUCS

  32. Defense Rules Says:

St Pete … Bucs actually ran MORE than even I predicted. I thought they’d run about 45% of the time, and instead they almost hit 50% (30 runs, 30 passes, 1 sack). But Coen mixed them up so well that it obviously kept Washington off-balance for most of the game. And by the later part of the 3rd quarter, their defense was exhausted.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

I completely disagree with this take. I watched every single run snap of the game via the ALL22 and often rewatching them back a few times on each run – and Barton, overall, was not good. Physically he was fine – which is great news, but he was making a lot of mental errors, not blocking the right guy or helping when he should have been blocking someone. All of that will get figured out, and I have no doubt Barton is going to be good. But in week 1, man, tons of errors on his behalf.

On a good note, some of those plays where it looked like Cody was getting beat – that wasn’t necessarily the case. On a number of them it looked like he was supposed to get help from Barton, and Barton instead blocked someone else – and that left Cody not leveraged correctly, which make him look like he physically got beat, and I don’t believe that is what happened.

In any case, the issues just seemed to be a rookie making his first start, and considering he’s moving from tackle, it was a promising start. But there’s lots to clean up.

  34. garro Says:

I think you may be right Rod. I saw at least two plays where i’m pretty sure Barton was supposed to help Mauch and went the other way. Not sure because they don’t let me in the huddle. They will figure it out.

    Go Bucs!
