Baker Mayfield Ignites Cleveland Sports Radio Meltdown

September 10th, 2024

Has Cleveland sports radio host triggered.

Joe guesses readers here saw Deshaun Watson try to play quarterback Sunday for the Browns. Or at least saw his truly miserable numbers.

Then some 16 hours south of Cleveland, former Browns franchise quarterback and present day Bucs starterBaker Mayfield may have had the best day of all NFL quarterbacks on Sunday as Mayfield tore up the Commandos.

Of course, after the Dixie Chicks got their arses handed to them by the Steelers on Sunday, so many who handed Atlanta the NFC South crown just because of Kirk Cousins and scoffed at the Bucs’ chances (just because of Mayfield) were scrambling to eat their words and issue Mea culpas.

On BSPN yesterday, Pat McAfee made an interesting point. Mayfield racked up four touchdown passes with Dave Canales coaching in Carolina (and boy, was that slimy Saints-Stinking Panthers game some special kind of ugly). So many people doubted Mayfield because of the work that Canales did with him and then he Canales bolted.

Well, Liam Coen, Canales’ successor in Tampa Bay, sure showed he can work with Mayfield, didn’t he?

So a lot of people had their arses hanging out the way they kicked dirt in Mayfield’s face and heralded Cousins’ arrival to Atlanta as something akin to Richard Jewell saving the city during the Olympics.

Mayfield’s day could also be felt in Cleveland. Sports radio there was in full-blown meltdown mode seeing Mayfield light it up and Watson continue to flop after being paid a king’s ransom to replace Mayfield. It looks like the kind of excrement a Florida State football fan refuses to eat.

Enjoy this Monday morning meltdown on WKRK-FM 92.3 in Cleveland.

They rewarded that idiot GM and Coach with new contracts.

  2. SteelStudBuc Says:

Lol this is too good. Remember it’s only week 1, and I’m cautiously optimistic. Could be a couple clunker games soon.

  3. lambchop Says:

Cleveland as a franchise couldn’t pee a hole into a paper bag. Let’s not think that Baker in Cleveland would be the same Baker in Tampa. That franchise is cursed and inept.

  4. Capt.Tim Says:

Lmao. That team deserves to be ridiculed. Stupidest office in pro sports.
And you sign a scumbag like that- you get what you pay for.

But as a Buc fan, can’t help but feel bad for Browns fans. Having lived thru the Bo Jackson, Booker Reece, etc fiascos- the fans don’t deserve that.

But thanks Brownies. Not often a team just gives you a franchise QB. Lmao

  5. MadMax Says:

    HA! love it

  6. Capt.Tim Says:

    Lmao.
    Thanks for the Franchise QB!

  7. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

Never have I seen a fan base adhere so fervently to a former player as Cleveland does with Mayfield. It borders on psychosis…..It should get even more interesting if the new sexual assault suit filed against him by a woman he was supposed to take out on a date results in any additional league action…

  8. Leopold Stotch Says:

Hilarious. Cleveland absolutely deserves it. You don’t boot a qb who demolished a divisional rival in playoffs, and then gets hosed by the refs in the divisional round of said playoffs. First browns qb to actually be decent and they sold the farm for a predator who can’t play anymore.

  9. heyjude Says:

That was hilarious! Right out of the box. Baker is our guy! They are stuck with Watson and all that baggage.

  10. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

One game does not a season make.
Hate to be a kill joy, but we just may get a very rude awakening in Detroit Sunday.
Just sayin… that will be our litmus test imo.
    No time for gloating imo.

  11. garro Says:

I would be curious Joe. If Baker pays any atention to such things. Does he get a good chuckle at the meatheads (Not the fans) in Cleveland? I would be laughing every time I deposited the Bucs checks!

Paying that Bozo Watson? Are you kidding? He and Tyreek should be cell mates. They won’t because it all gets swept under the rug by the media and Roger but…

    Go Bucs

  12. Proudbucsfan Says:

I love it, Baker played fantastic, MVP, this is what we are getting all season.

  13. Funderstruck Says:

    Pure GOLD!

That was even more fun than watching 2020 Playoff Hero Tyler Johnson roast CDIII on Sunday night! It’s OK to be happy for someone to go on to success elsewhere if it didn’t work outhere—and I’m happy for Tyler (that Rams top 4 WR group is impressive!)…of course it’s a lot easier to root for Tyler when our WR room is as formidable and your team is 1-0; a little uglier to stomach when your team is awful and your Scümbag Savior QB’s biggest highlight this week is yet-another-lawsuit.

I really hope Bake has this meltdown as an alarm sound every morning!

  14. Bucsfan Says:

Winston will shine in Cleveland after they bench the serial abuser.

  15. bob in valrico Says:

Baker is already proving his worth. Credit goes to Todd for getting Licht to sign him and recognizing the talent that few other “NFL” experts recognized
and still don’t. This game showed how effective he can be distributing the ball
to all his weapons. Hats off to Cohen also for letting Baker be Baker. The O line is still a work in progress. Liam kept White in at times to help in protection. His blocking helped Baker get
enough time to connect with Mike on his second TD. He also stood up and kept an unblocked defender from making a beeline for Baker on another.

  16. Show Me the TDs Says:

Leopold, ever hear of Bernie Kosar?

  17. Matt_PcAfee Says:

    That was HILARIOUS!

  18. Buccos Says:

With the number of franchise QB’s that Tampa has gifted to other teams throughout their history it is nice to actually be on the receiving end for a change. Thanks Cleveland! You dropped your cookie

  19. Razor Ramone Says:

Comedy GOLD!!! Great stuff , Joe!

  20. '79 Defense Says:

He knew damn well what those numbers were before he asked the guy what they were.

With the number of franchise QB’s that Tampa has gifted to other teams throughout their history…”

    No, they haven’t.

They’ve given up one true franchise qb – Steve Young.

The rest ended up being journeymen.
    Vinny Testaverde – Journeyman
    Doug Williams- Journeyman
    Trent Dilfer – Journeyman
    Jameis Winston – Journeyman

None of these guys were franchise QBs. And Baker isn’t either – yet. A franchise QB is a guy who’s play makes your team relevant for multiple years. Williams and Dilfer won superbowls, and they were both replaced immediately.

  22. Fan of the South Says:

Other QB’s that have put up 30 or more on the Commanders in their last handful of games. Tommy DeVito and Trevor Siemian.

Rodgers, Watson, and Cousins all played their first game after missing half of last season and were matched up against #3, #5, and #6 defenses in ’23.

Bucs and Mayfield drew #32 in Week 1 and people want to make comparisons based on that?

Only comparison that can be made between the 4 is only one put himself in a position to have to work for 4 mil + incentives 6 years into their career.

  23. Gipper Says:

Mayfield had better day last year vs Green Bay than Washington Sunday. He was great in both games. Losing Canales was strength by subtraction. He continually put offense in bad position of 3rd and long by up the middle runs on 1st and 2nd down. For all the remaining doubters, Mayfield outplayed Joe Burrow in 4 head to head games with CLE. One game he had 24 straight completions and 5TD’s. The Browns organization is run by an inherited wealth, rich guy who continually shoots himself in the foot. The Bucs have a solid organization with Glazers, Licht and Coach Bowles. The best is yet to come for Bucs and Baker.

  24. SlyPirate Says:

    That’s really funny.

  25. orlbucfan Says:

Oh, give it a rest. So far, Famous Jameis is the only major draft pick QB that has left Tampa and so far, B-U-S-T. I feel sorry for the Browns’ fans. I’ve walked in those loser (and worse) shoes down here in ECFL, being a long-time, loyal Bucs fan. One point that isn’t being made: BM still thinks he’s got something to prove. He’s playing feisty, and with a chip on his shoulder. The whole Bucs team shares it. That’s another reason why the Lions’ game will be a major marker of how far Tampa Bay has come, mentally. They are very aware of the franchise’s history. Bet on it.

  26. Joe Says:

Does he get a good chuckle at the meatheads (Not the fans) in Cleveland?

Don’t think Mayfield listens or pay attention to Cleveland sports radio. But if Mayfield heard this, am sure he’d get a kick out of it.

  27. Formerbrownsfan Says:

Bernie Kpsar played for the #Realbrowns ! Which is now the Baltimore Ravens. Please try not to associate him with dumpster fire of an expansion team. Who happen to love players that hurt women.

  28. Buddha Says:

The season is 17 games and the Buccaneers already are down three starters and one top backup for as much as a month or longer. The offense is going to have to put up 25+ a game to get through this month. Kancey loss is huge

  29. Jp3 Says:

Will Winston pull a Baker in Cleveland?

  30. Kenton Smith Says:

orlbucfan. Rest assured. I did bet on it! But after driving up to Kansas yesterday I realized the odds are changing fast. I do a very small amount of betting and only when I think the risk reward is too good to pass up. Conference champs – $300 to win 975. $600 Super Bowl champs – 43 thousand and change. And season MVP for Mayfield $100 to win 7500 plus. Had the back and forth with the wife of 40 years just to do that. But 52 grand reward for 1000 risk? I want to up that same bet times 10! Only thing is after 40 years I don’t feel like I have the time to break in a new gal – especially since I’d probably be in the hospital ( concussion by frying pan). Oh well – can’t have everything.

  31. Jp3 Says:

@Stormy 3out of 5 Won Superbowls OK The Ravenns Defense was great at some point Trent stepped up and made big plays…Doug caught 🔥 and the Skins blew Elway and the Broncos away.Steve had play part time depending on Montana s health until “he got the monkey off his back” .Vinny even led THE JETS to a AFC championship game

  32. orlbucfan Says:

@Kenton, thanks for the nice compliment. I don’t gamble or bet. Just not interested. This next game will have some interesting odds. I think Motown is favored by 7 right now. I’m sure it will increase game day. I would love to listen to a classic Cardiac Bucs win. Good thing I have low BP. LOL.

Never have I seen a fan base adhere so fervently to a former player as Cleveland does with Mayfield. It borders on psychosis….

Why? If it happened to us we would be worse. I would have moved back to Tampa and lived in a tent just so I could hold protest signs and demand the firings of all involved everyday near the stadium.

  34. Cobraboy Says:

Another Week 1 in the NFL, and another 16 shattered dreams.

  35. Rayjay1122 Says:

    That was great!!! 😂

  36. ATLBUC Says:

One thing that Baker never had was a stable environment. The Buccaneers allow its players to play distraction free football. The last drama we had here was AB, oh yeah and White saying he wanted a trade but he was never a leader on this team and it surprised nobody on the team when he got benched and was let walk.
Add team talent to a stress free work environment and Baker might push for OPY or MVP. This comes from a Trask supporter.

  37. Chef Baker Says:

It’s the “you’ll figure it out “ for me! Hilarious

  38. matthew a veal Says:

the christmas we get we deserve

  39. Critmark Says:

The problem in Cleveland is ownership. I think Stefanski can be a good coach, if he was allowed to do it. He is forced to follow the lead of ownership instead of his own plan. It will always be so and the Clowns will always be Clowns. And the media there will always be Homers. They are going to have to get used to it, ownership aint gonna change, Watson isn’t going to be any better than what they have seen in Cleveland & Baker just keeps getting better.

And literally none of that makes them anything more than Journeymen. If you read some of the comments here, you’d think Tampa gave up on actual franchise qbs. The bucs (except for Steve Young) did not, and their career results prove it.

  41. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

I feel bad for the Browns fans. Seeing the Falcons fans melt down though? Well that’s a different story

    wow that is GOLD.

    Stormy.
    I call BS. Buddy.
If a qb went 8-8,8-8, 8-8, Super Bowl ring, 8-8
Then he is more of a franchise Qb than a guy that goes 13-4 every year, and loses in the first round every year.

The Whole thing is about winning the ring. Everything else is foreplay.
