Todd Bowles Not Upbeat About Bryce Hall

September 9th, 2024

Bad news on injury front.

An under-the-radar free agent signing this offseason was cornerback Bryce Hall. When he kept his hands off receivers, he was a talented defender.

Well, the demeanor and sounds from Todd Bowles today made it appear the Bucs fear the worst about Hall. Bowles seemed to indicate if Hall’s injury turns out to be what the Bucs think it is, he’s done for the season.

When Hall was on the ground yesterday being tended to by trainers, he was in air cast, as TV viewers saw clearly.

“Bryce is definetly out [for Detroit in Week 2],” Bowles said matter-of-factly. “From what I know, it’s probably season-ending.”

Bowles’ body language suggested he’s expecting bad news when all the medical exam results return on Hall.

As for Calijah Kancey and his calf injury, Bowles shed light on that mysterious ailment.

Bowles confirmed it happened in Friday’s practice. And yes, Bowles said, it is the same calf that Kancey injured in a non-contact drill last summer early in training camp that set him back weeks.

Yaya had zero stats Sunday. Not even a tackle.

  2. RagingBrisket Says:

The amount of injuries on defense is alarming

  3. SlyPirate Says:

    SILVER LINING
Detroit won’t have any video on our mystery defenders.

… had to dig deep for that one. Hope y’all appreciate.

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

Dew Yaya had most pressures out of any of the OLB’s and 16.5% pressure rate (huge increase over rookie season). If Daniels wasn’t a running QB Yaya would have had two or more sacks.

  5. JimBobBuc Says:

I just want us to get our of the Detroit game with no more injuries. The Bucs need to think long term and not push the injured guys out too soon.

    Good points.

  7. SB~LV Says:

I only saw one replay. his leg was distorted. 8 weeks for bone to mend then rehab, that’s without surgery.

  8. HC Grover Says:

Plan 9 will have to fire his 1st stage lifting booster to clear the pad.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Thank God the preseason helped prepare some of our backups

  10. Bucsalltheway Says:

Dislocated ankle and a fractured fibula you can pack him up for the year smh lfg

  11. adam from ny Says:

where is dee delaney when you need him…

    he’s gone

  12. Lord Cornelius Says:

Yaya would have had some sacks if Daniels wasn’t a 4.3 Lamar Jackson / Michael Vick type player.

Either way visually he was blowing up the outside tackles and being disruptive.

To me the biggest surprises visually were JTS & Dennis. Maybe it’s becuase I’m a natural homer, but man JTS looked like a different player and Dennis looked amazing lol. JTS was using his hands and power instead of just trying to run around the outside. And it was working. It’s like he’s learned from Yaya or something

  13. Dave Pear Says:

    What about Zyon?

  14. ocala Says:

Keenan Isaac was just cut, so I expect the Bucs will sign him since he was going to be signed to the practice squad before the Panthers claimed him off waivers.

  15. Matt Says:

Saw that too Ocala. Seems logical Bucs would grab Isaac and put him on active to replace Hall. Wonder if Bucs will sign a bigger name FA to replace him for the long haul.

  16. A Bucs Fan Says:

I posted this elsewhere but it’s being reported AW31 has both a foot and ankle sprain that will sideline him at least 2 weeks.

  17. Lakeland Says:

JTS is playing for his NFL future. He may get double -digits sacks this season.

  18. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

I think they paid a price in that game. Now I hope someone is out there and they spend the money. Prayers for you guys.. I think the offensive line took a little time and then it had the pleasure of leading the game it got better but, first game to many people hurt. Let’s Go Bucs!!!

  19. unbelievable Says:

    Well that stinks.

  20. Lakeland Says:

The Bucs have good young corners who can step up. I thought most of them outplayed Bryce Hall, Josh Hayes during the preseason.

  21. rrsrq Says:

Someone, please tell me the Bucs signed a FA CB other than Revis, that actually made an impact on this team. I root for them all to be successful going back to the Alterraun Verner signing. think about it… This is definitely unfortunate.

  22. Baking with Coen Says:

Those “Worthless preseason games” helped our backups indeed TBBF!

Maybe our offense is able to keep us in the game against Detroit.

All I know is we own our division. Once again we will be playoff bound.

    LFB!!!!

  23. SRQ Bucs Fan Says:

A few plays before the injury it looked like Hall(?) was afraid to stick his face in and make a tackle.

  24. Stillabucsfan Says:

Diaby was in that backfield bro! It was nice seeing jts with that strip sack.

  25. Sam Says:

His ankle was pointing the wrong direction Hes out

  26. Buc4evr Says:

Hope AW31 can rub some dirt on it and keep playing. Otherwise the Bucs better be looking to sign a few CBs. Izien is needed back at Safety.

  27. Defense Rules Says:

So for the Lions’ game we’ll be missing starters Winfield, Kancey & Logan Hall as a minimum, plus most likely McCollum (concussion) & backups Bryce Hall & possibly Hayes (he went out too with an ankle injury). Bowles said Funderburk didn’t dress for the game because he was on last week’s injury report (minor injury) but he should be ready for Detroit. Merriweather not dressing for the Washington game was probably the same reason (he’d been on the injury report for a hip I believe) but he should be ready too. Lots of defenders are already dinged up, but all but 4 or 5 should be ready to go.

Good news is that our offense looked very good in Game 1 and is healthy. They generated almost 34 minutes of TOP & I’d love to see them duplicate that in Detroit. Interestingly the Lions beat us on TOP both times last year because of turnovers (we had 3 to their 0) and 3rd down conversions (we were 6-for-24 combined in both games). Our offense yesterday had no giveaways and we were 9-for-13 on 3rd down conversions. Hopefully that bodes well for us in Detroit (and beyond).

Pretty sure Brent Grimes was very good for us until he became very bad for us.

  29. geno711 Says:

Well, PFF gave Grimes an 88.6 grade in 2016, a 74.1 grade in 2017, and a 61.3 grade in 2018.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Buc4evr … Sounds like Winfield will miss at least 2 weeks. Hopefully Merriweather is healed up now & will be ready to fill in for him. Tykee Smith played over 2/3 of the game (all at Nickel I presume), and Izien played over 1/2 the game.

I’m more concerned about our DLine. Washington’s OLine is just OK, yet the Commanders rushed 30 times for 138 yards (4.6 YPC) and 3 TDs. Detroit ran 31 times against the Rams in their first game for 163 yards (5.3 YPC) and 2 TDs. No doubt in my mind that’s what they’ll try to do to us, just to see if we can stop them.

Yesterday Vea only got 59% def snaps, but Gaines got 61%. The rest were well down there … Greene (39%), Brewer (32%) and Gholston (31%). Not sure how we were manning a 3-man front based on those numbers (that’s the equivalent of about a 2-man front).

  31. geno711 Says:

DR — Detroit OL might be the best run blocking line in the NFL.

But that being said, Goff does not run.

Yesterday’s game is really hard to equate to how the Lions will run the ball.

The running backs for Washington rushed only 14 times for 50 yards.
The rest of those rushing yards were Daniels.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

    geno711 … Lordy I miss Suh & JPP.

  33. LakelandSteve Says:

Our offense better light it up against Detroit because it looks like our defense will be without several starters including more than one defensive back. It might be a long day if we have trouble scoring.

  34. Leopold Stotch Says:

I saw the injury. It’s pretty bad. He won’t be back this year. Prayers for the man of course.

  35. garro Says:

Ouch! Any players worth bringing in Jason?

    Go Bucs!
