Winning Start For Graham Barton

September 8th, 2024

The snaps were clean, the results were eye-opening.

The Bucs rolled out their rookie center against a beastly Washington front today and he held up pretty well in the 37-20 win. Joe didn’t hear anyone barking, “friggin’ Graham Barton.” Joe, however, barked a couple of times about guards Cody Mauch and Ben Bredeson, but not Barton.

Of course, there was the fourth-quarter penalty called on Barton for leaving the line of scrimmage too soon on a screen pass, but replay overturned it.

The first-round pick’s smile that ensued was wider than the gap between Bucky Irving’s yards per carry and Rachaad White’s.

After the victory, Baker Mayfield had good things to say about Barton. And he pointed to the scoreboard.

“Anytime you’re that effecient on offense, the big men up front play well.”

Thirty-seven points from the Bucs offense without the benefit of the Tampa Bay defense forcing a turnover. Yeah, Joe will call that efficient.

Joe assumes Barton got his jitters out of the way and answered any questions about his fitness. That should set him up well for a very tough test in the crazy-loud Lions dome next Sunday.

Yes we needed a good center and we got one, he has the right personality too. He will get better with time too. Hopefully Mauch just pulled a tough assignment. Overall it was good performance.

  2. Durango 95 Says:

Barton did look solid today I especially like the grin on his face after finding out the illegal man down field call that was called against him had been reversed. Guy was almost chuckling out loud..

  3. Bucs Guy Says:

Barton may have played well, but Wirfs did not have a good game.

  4. BuxfaninTX Says:

But was his smile wider than the gap in Cody Mauchs teeth? 🤣🤣

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

I think Wirfs is playing hurt again. He’s got an ankle sprain or some lower leg injury.

  6. Vegasbuccaneer Says:

Defense didn’t look well at all

  7. Heath Hunt Says:

So many people on this site crying for JPJ as a “True Center” It’s time to out yourself as a fraud now

  8. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

The fact that he didn’t run past the line owes to some good coaching as well. Head up play. Yes that smile was priceless. He was like I told you zebras so!

  9. geno711 Says:

I didn’t see Wirfs’ bad play. Washington brought a lot of run blitzes, some pass blitzes. We didn’t always pick them up, but when we did, we made them pay. Left some points out there, though

  10. Jim Says:

Don’t know that I would call the Wash def front ‘beastly.’ Good, but not Joe-level hyperbole.

  11. unbelievable Says:

Agree that our guards definitely seem like the weak spots. Mauch got blown up badly once or twice today.

  12. unbelievable Says:

Wirfs let up on his guy which led to a big Mayfield sack

  13. Conner50 Says:

Wirfs had a good game the play where his man sacked Baker was also due to them blitzing up the middle drove white right back into where baker could have stepped up and got away. Tampa played very well today on both sides of the ball

  14. EEK Says:

    Amazing game

    Tremendous

  15. Buccos Says:

That is how you open a season at home!!

  16. SlyPirate Says:

Let’s not forget the guy lining up across from him is a 2x Pro Bowler.

  17. BAKERSBucs says Says:

    Conner50says I knew u wud blame baker u take the cake u r a total a**hole

  18. Miller5252 Says:

Since Hall took out Jensen the O line hasn’t been the same. Having a really good center made the line tough and really good when Brady was around. Now that they’ve found what looks to be another really good center, this line should end up being in the top 10 at the end of the year. It’s gonna be nice to have this young line together for years to come! Look out as Barton continues to get better!

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He did okay. The whole line needs to gel. Once they do, they’ll truly be a force.

  20. ThatAintRight! Says:

There was 1-2x Barton looked like he got pushed around and beat , nothing occurred as a result of it.

I would not be shocked to see Tampa bay add a vet by week 4-5 to play LG if someone else isn’t getting the job done. Donovan smith to TB as a LG?
I mean he may not be that road blocker , but I bet he ain’t letting pressures in.

He’s going to restrain people and force them away from the pocket. That leaves baker all the time in the world to make reads.

  21. Joemaguire Says:

Braswell does not look athletic at all.

We needed a CB or a LG with that 2nd pick

  22. Kno one Says:

Can somebody tell Barton that he needs to be in the front blocking on screens and not chasing after them from behind .. he definitely had a couple missed blocks & I saw him get bull rushed/overpowered a couple times..Also he threw a block from the back, after the play which was unnecessary.. just got lucky he wasn’t caught.. All in all-I’d say his performance was a C. definitely room to improve

  23. Kno one Says:

In the first half so far, I’ve counted 6 holds 6 missed blocks and 4 times Barton got knocked on his butt..

  24. Tom Denham Says:

Give Barton a break guys. How well did you play in your professional football game?

  25. Tom Denham Says:

meant to say your “first” professional football game

  26. ZavierDeSine Says:

I’ve been a Tampa Bay fan for a long time. The one constant whether it was a Super Bowl winning team, or a terrible losing team. The fans are unrelentingly going to find something to piss and moan about. We won, commandingly and convincingly. Enjoy it.

  27. Kno one Says:

Hainsey is better!! Watch the film..I can show Barton missing blocks-running behind the screen-holding-hitting a guy in the back after the play..I’m just tired of people acting like Hainsey’s play wasn’t good..Cuz if u watch the game film/ Hainsey is a better center!! Period!! I can show you the difference!! I actually went back and watched the two for comparison.. Hainsey runs screens correctly/ while Barton seems to chase them from behind!! Search Rachad White highlights and watch Hainsey outplay Barton for yourself.I will say Barton had a better 2nd half, but he still didn’t outplay Hainsey!! Anyone that needs proof, email me and I’ll send you the video evidence.. eyeknoone@gmail.com..
