Cody Mauch Explains Entering Year 2 With Bucs

September 8th, 2024

Rookie transition over.

Joe often gives rookies passes. Rookies often play like rookies because, well, they’re rookies.

So Joe isn’t saying that Bucs right guard Cody Mauch was a bad player last year. He wasn’t. Joe thought that he got hit hard by the rookie wall. Going from college, especially a small college, to the NFL is a big adjustment, mentally and physically.

Joe figured an offseason in the Bucs’ weight room and a full offseason with a tailored workout program from trainers would do a body good for Mauch.

The thing Joe asked Mauch is how much learning a new offense may have set back his development?

No big deal, Mauch said.

“I’m settling in a lot more,” Mauch told Joe. “I just feel more confident out there. I don’t know about easier. Smoother for sure.”

As for the adjustment to a new offense? Mauch said there’s no reason to whine about it. He’s a professional. Suck it up and get the job done.

“It’s been alright,” Mauch said. “The schemes and whatnot aren’t realy too different. Just some corrections here and there from what we were running last year. Not too much of a road block.”

One thing that may help Mauch raise his game is working with new offensive line coach Kevin Carberry. He’s a no-nonsense guy that doesn’t believe in taking time off.

“‘Carbs is always willing to coach,” Mauch said. “You will be in the cafeteria and he will come up to you and give you coaching points.

“He’s not shy to coach you and I think that’s great. Everyone can use a little bit more coaching.”

Joe supposes not having an offensive coordinator call for a running back to slam into your backside time and time again will help out Mauch, too.

The more I hear about this coach the more I like

The two mullets that went to Carolina with Canalwater couldn’t stop a DL with a granite wall. Carberry gives the warms.

Pear. Best three sentence essay I’ve read. Topic, support, and conclusion. Spot on analysis backed up by high octane hyperbole. Joe should hire you.
    LFG Bucs!

Canalwater…good one, Pear. Plenty polluted, too. Good riddance!

Mauch is sounding good and has the 2nd year confidence. Can’t wait to see how he does today.

Damn, Mauch looks a lot bigger than last year. Looks like he really did put on 15-20 lbs of muscle in the offseason

Small school and really didn’t face a whole lot of competition as a result of that. Combine that with really not getting any real off season because of the combine, draft, etc and he may have been slap worn out. Not to mention being thrown in to a steep learning curve of a new offense along with the rest of the guys. No small wonder he struggled a bit.

I will say this yet again Mauch looked alot better the second half of the season. Also his so called PFF grades were ridiculous. He was not that bad. He looked very awkward at times but mostly still managed to hold his own.
I think the Giant Ginger will be fine.

    Go Bucs!
