BSPN Prediction: Jamel Dean Makes A Key Play Sunday
September 7th, 2024Get the drug test kit ready.
That’ll be necessary if BSPN’s Seth Walder, a man who never met a number he didn’t like, is accurate.
A little background: Early in training camp, Jamel Dean picked off a pass. After the practice, Bucs coach Todd Bowles was asked about Dean’s interception and Bowles quipped that Dean was going to need a drug test, implying it was a shocking play because Dean is on a 29-game streak without an interception.
Also, when a player has a really good game, often the NFL will drug test that player after the game.
So if what Walder predicts for Sunday comes true, Dean might just have to do a whiz quiz for The Shield on Sunday night.
Bold prediction: Bucs cornerback Jamel Dean will intercept [Jayden] Daniels. While Terry McLaurin is a good receiver, he has never been an elite separator, so Dean figures to be around the ball plenty when he’s on the Commanders’ No. 1 wideout. No matter how good a prospect Daniels is, he’s still a rookie in his pro debut. He’ll probably provide an interception opportunity or two.
McLaurin, while good, isn’t on the next level of NFL receivers. Joe isn’t sure he’s better than Chris Godwin. He sure as hell isn’t on Mike Evans’ level.
Departed cornerback Carlton Davis nearly always lined up against the opposing No. 1 receiver, and he had solid success locking them down.
Will Dean be lined up against McLaurin? All throughout training camp, fellow outside cornerback Zyon McCollum was going up against Evans. Is McCollum going to take the Davis role and be the Bucs’ No. 1 corner? Or will it be handed to Dean?
Walder’s overall point makes sense. Daniels is expected to make mistakes in his first at-bat against an NFL defense. And it would be no shock if Dean took advantage.

I hope McCollum takes the role of guarding the one. He’s more athletic and even though Dean has straight line speed, I think Zyon is quicker in and out of cuts.

Let’s not underestimate JDaniels. If he’s gon show he can play with the big dogs, then this is the time to so, because historically, we’ve had trouble with rookie qbs making their early debut. With Dean, I’m not a big fan. He’s been in the league 6 yrs n just play too passive to me. He’s not an aggressive pull up n smack u in the face type player. When he does make a play, he seems shocked himself. He lacks “”hand eye coordination n field awareness”. His dropped a potential int in 2021 in his first game against the commanders n played passive n allowed key first down catches. He’s not elite n shouldn’t have been paid as such.
JDeans n JTS are both on the hot seat this season. No more excuses.

Who is Jamel Dean?

Strange prediction.

Hope Jamel does well, but prefer to focus on the most important numbers: Bucs win 25-17.
Just for kicks though, a couple of other guesses, just to see how close they come. Bucs will win the Turnover Battle (2-1) AND the Time-of-Possession Battle (32-28). We’ll run 70 offensive plays, with a distribution of 44% run (31), 44% short passing (31), 10% deep passes (7) and 2% sacks (1). In terms of a ‘Balanced Attack’, I suspect that’s what this current Bucs regime would consider optimal … as long as we win.
Would make a prediction about how many passing yards our defense will give up for the fruits among us, but in the big scheme of things it doesn’t make a rat’s a$$ difference as long as you win.

This week’s picks:
Tennessee +4
Arizona +6.5
Indianapolis +3
Washington +3.5
Carolina +4
I will keep a running record throughout the season.

I’m not sure about your take on McLaurin, Joe. Seems Ira and many of the pundits on the Sirius NFL talk show thinks he’s a hell of receiver and will give the Bucs fits. Apparently he and Daniels have developed quite a chemistry. We will see.

My bold prediction for interception will come from Zyon McCollum. Dean will extend his streak of no games with an interception.

There’s a reason why dean has gone 29 games without an int. And it’s not a great reason. Perhaps he’s just not very good?
