Can Seven Plays Translate Into A Game?
September 6th, 2024What can we expect from the Bucs on Sunday? It doesn’t seem that Liam Coen is fully sure.
The Bucs offensive coordinator admitted yesterday the first-team offense looked sharp in worthless preseason — for a grand total of seven plays.
Generally, that’s maybe slightly more than 10 percent of a team’s number of snaps in a real game.
“You saw flashes, obviously, when we went into Miami with the majority of our starting group for seven plays there and we executed at a pretty good level,” Coen said.
Of course, that was against a defense that was not playing all its starters. And, as Joe knows well from history, defenses in worthless preseason run such vanilla schemes, you just want to chug chocolate syrup.
Coen admitted while that’s encouraging, succeeding on a handful of plays in worthless preseason is a far cry from Week 1.
“They did their job, went down the field, did what they were supposed to do,” Coen said of the first-team starters two weeks ago. “Now we’ve got to go do it against better competition.”
It’s not just better competition, but against a strong defensive coach having his full toolbox of weapons and schemes ready to unveil.
Still, Joe is confident. Baker Mayfield is coming off a career year and he’s a veteran. What more can be said of Mike Evans? Chris Godwin is returning to the position that made him a Pro Bowl receiver and Rachaad White is dangerous in the passing game.
The Commandos had the No. 2 pick in the draft last year for a reason. Joe is confident Coen will find a way to use his top-shelf weapons to score points.

Very interested to see what this starting offense looks like against a starting defense.
I wonder if Baker will continue to throw for under 100 yards in the 1st half like last season. Which isn’t a bad if the team runs the ball well which the Bucs didn’t last season. How will this offense play to the strengths of ALL players?
Will this be a quick strike offense? Will there be a lot of screens like KC uses? Most importantly, can they score more?
It’s gonna be fun!

One thing I took away from last night’s game…. If Lamar Jackson has to play like that he most likely won’t be around for the Week 7 game.

Bakerfan
Lamar running is their offense. They can’t just rely on his arm, they did that in the AFC Championship Game and you saw how that turned out.

If the Commando’s just happen to be the one team that goes from worse to first in their Division this season look out. Could make that 10-7 most seem to have penciled in for the Bucs that much harder. On top of that there are 3 more worse to first possibilities when Bucs play the Chargers, Cardinals, and Panthers.
All 4 or 5 of those games against those teams not many think the Bucs can lose. One thing for sure there are none they can afford to lose. Panthers will get two bites at the apple.

After watching last nights game, I think the Bucs can hang with the Chiefs and I think they will beat the Ravens. Ravens are really weak up the middle on the offensive line, so bull rush away. Vita should be licking his chops on this game.
Tonight will be the Eagles, 1st look.

Throw the pigskin all over the yard. Pass to set up the run. Ball out. Score points. Win.

Bring on Sunday!

Just want to see complimental ball. If the O and D play even close to their potential during the same game every week, this will be a really fun season. Agree with Bee about needing to score quickly. Hate seeing punts on the 1st and 2nd drives every week.

It should also be pointed out that offenses, too, run very generic plays during the preseason. At least I hope so; otherwise, where was all the pre-snap motion we keep hearing about?

We got this!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!

It wasn’t only (lack of) quarterback that made the Washington Football Team one of the worst in the league last year. Plenty of other positions had a hand in that. It is extremely unlikely that they fixed all of that in one offseason. Also, with a new coach who has yet to coach these guys in a real game, you should bet on the Bucs to win big.

Daniels should be much better than L. Jackson imo. Same kind of speed and elusiveness but a MUCH better passer.
Talking heads have been bending over backwards for a few years now trying to stress how Jackson has developed into a pocket passer when he really hasn’t.
Coen is the wild card here. We know we have plenty of talent. Time to show up for work and establish an “identity”. No reason we shouldn’t be scoring 30+ PPG regularly 🤘🏼

With Quinn and that Redskins front (it will always be the Redskins team to me, it’s what I grew up knowing) it seems likely running will be tough this game. But their secondary might be suspect, so it seems the best chance of success will be the passing game against the Skins.
Should be an interesting game and I’m looking forward to it.

Bunch of 1st round QBs drafted this year and wouldn’t you know it we get one of the two who stand out. I watched Caleb Williams at OU before he left for USC. Watched Daniels play a couple times last year. Both guys are legit. Seriously good. Each have Heismann awards. Glad we’re not playing the Bears this year. Stars often play like stars. I love our defense. We fly around and take care of points allowed. I’d feel better if Kancey was 100 percent. I’m not gonna get down like Dave Pear will if our defense should struggle against these guys. They also have a hell of a receiver. It’s a team game – if our offense has to hang 30 to win this game so be it. I’m sure the defense will have to do the same for our offense the next time. Let’s get ready to watch a good football team that’s going to make us proud by the time this season is over. Go team!
