NFL Executives Crap On The Bucs

September 5th, 2024

“Greeny, text that Glazer hacker and get me into Mike Sando’s inbox.”

So five NFL executives were surveyed anonymously by TheAthletic.com for their rankings of NFC teams.

Writer Mike Sando posted the results and story behind a paywall where he explained that those surveyed have backgrounds that “range from personnel evaluation to contracts/salary cap and analytics/strategy.”

Each exec ranked every teams under the condition of anonymity and offered scattered explanations.

Joe is not even going to touch the vapid commentary. Joe will stick with the votes. Tampa Bay got two votes as the 10th-best team in the NFC. Two votes as 11th-best! And one ranked the Bucs No. 7 overall.

Man, it’s not everyone, but it is downright stunning how many people paying very close attention think the Bucs are a losing team with a losing roster.

  1. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“anonymity” is where I have an issue with these things.

If they don’t have the guts to put their names to it, they’re not worth listening to.

And these sources could be very low ranking reps.

  2. Larrd Says:

It is safe to say the Bucs are underrated, I think.

A guy on the radio show “Fiirst Things First” said the Bucs defense is getting old and none of the other guys blinked an eye.

Outside LVD they seem pretty young, to me!

  3. First Name Greatest Says:

8-9 and 9-8 will do that

Not many proven significant signings to address areas of weakness (pass rush, pass defense, run game and interior o line)

Retread Head Coach without a track record of consistent success

First Time Offensive Coordinator at the NFL Level

    Journeyman QB

If Bucs want any hype or love form media types they need to earn it with their play

  4. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Look, I don’t know what is so surprising about the way the Bucs are looked at nationally. We had a mediocre record last year and for the most part only resigned our own guys. Why WOULD people think we’ll be better?

Stop whining so much. There is a possibility we’ll go 8-9 or worse and everyone gets fired. As fans, we certainly hope not, but all of our hopes are pinned on all of our youth playing better in order for us to actually BE better.

  5. LouisFriend Says:

Joe, I think you’re the one of the few trying to be offended by honest opinions. If people don’t think much of a head coach – like Bowles – what’s surprising about the rankings for the team being lower?

The Bucs actual ranking process begins Sunday. The rest is nonsense.

  6. heyjude Says:

Agree with Bonzai. If someone has to be anonymous, it’s worthless.

  7. PSL Bob Says:

Wouldn’t the 10th or 11th best record put us in the playoffs again? IMO it would depend on how they rank the Falcons as to whether or not they’re dumping on us.

  8. Cobraboy Says:

    So what?

    Screw those “anonymous” wimps.

Be a freakin’ man, and make your voice public.

Otherwise, just take orders from your wife’s boyfriend.

  9. Saskbucs Says:

Here is the main reason I am offended by all this. These same people will say the Packers and Cowboys are top 5 teams. Last I checked the Packers didn’t do anything last year the Bucs didn’t do, in fact the Bucs kicked their a** in Lambeau. Packers also play in a “tougher” division.

The Cowboys are a team that actually got worse and they still have 2 unpaid superstars in the locker room, plus Mike McCarthy who is worse than Bowles imo if coaching is the reason you wanna knock the Bucs.

Yes, we have had .500 records vs a first place schedule for last 2 years. I don’t think people should be slobbering over the Bucs but it’s blatant disrespect at this point for the organization. Look at any numbers that have been posted on this site over and over, quick turnaround old to one of youngest rosters in the league while staying champs, most homegrown starters in the league, playoff wins 4 of last 5 years. It’s lazy and embarrassing for all these people. How many teams have won 2 Super Bowls this millennium? 5? And Bucs are one alongside recent great teams in the Pats and Chiefs. Not like this current iteration of the team doesn’t know how to win.

Please Bucs, shut all these dummies up this season!

  10. Citrus County Says:

Like George Carlin said, “It’s one big club and you ain’t in it”.
It sounds to me like all the big city “old” franchises simply can’t stand being upstaged by the “newcomer” Bucs. I think they think we are supposed to be irrelevant and stay that way.

  11. PSL Bob Says:

My bad. I thought it was the 10th or 11th best in the league. No, 10th or 11th best in the NFC. You’ve got to be kidding me. Now I know why Joe was so riled up!

  12. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Who cares. All that matters is points. If they start taking points away from us, or adding to our opponents, with their silly opinions, then I will start to care what they “think”.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

These anonymous sources have opinions just like every other A$$holes

  14. stpetebucfan Says:

A few thoughts. First I hear Joe and agree with his observations but I embrace the disrespect. One thing the Bucs won’t have to worry about is being overconfident or worse still, COMPLACENT.

Can you say the sorry season that ended the GOAT’s career! He added to the malaise but it wasn’t just Brady. Too many Buc “stars” believed their past success and clippings and Tom Brady at QB meant they could take their foot off the gas pedal. That will not happen this year.

2nd Agree completely with Bonzai. “If they don’t have the guts to put their names to it, they’re not worth listening to.”

3rd First Name Greatest is a troll. His post clearly outs him!!!

“8-9 and 9-8 will do that” Really? The freaking Falcons finished 7-10!!! It was the THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR!!! But it’s even worse. Before their 3 seasons of 7-10 they posted freaking 4-12, prior to that 2 years of 7-10. Do you comprehend that First Name? IT’S BEEN SIX YEARS SINCE THE FALCONS POSTED A WINNING RECORD. So much for your record theory eh?

“Not many proven significant signings to address areas of weakness (pass rush, pass defense, run game and interior o line)”

Do you even follow the Bucs? Seriously!! Their #1 draft pick was a freaking Center!!! I may be mistaken but I believe Center is considered “interior O line”!

They picked up a pass rusher in the 2nd and oh btw added a WR who is probably better than anybody currently on the Falcons. As for their pass defense they resigned Jordan Whitehead!!! They augmented their run game with Bucky Irving. IMHO not as significant to the run game as the Barton selection.

“Journeyman QB” A PRO BOWL selection last year!! 2nd to Saquon in his Rookie of the Year balloting…. Mayfield’s peers named him the 50th best player in the league. They didn’t think he was a “journeyman”! But what do NFL players know compared to blog trolls eh?

“Retread Head Coach without a track record of consistent success”

Yeah the only coach to lead the New York Jets to a winning record in the last THIRTEEN SEASONS!!! Two Divisional titles in his two seasons with the Bucs including a first round Playoff win last year.

WOW calling you a troll is actually a compliment. It explains one of the most ill informed ignorant posts of the day!!!

  15. SlyPirate Says:

    10th-best team in the NFC!!!!

You know what? I don’t even care anymore. Everyone has done said their peace. Time to put up or shut up. Play the games.

  16. Pewter Power Says:

Only Super Bowl winning team to start out defending their title on the road! They hate our franchise they hate when we succeed and they definitely hate baker so perfect storm. We can only laugh at them in the win column and be perennial dominators and this is where you come in licht.

  17. infomeplease Says:

    Bring on Sunday 4pm😎

  18. infomeplease Says:

To quote some rock band out of Athens GA . “Same as it always was!”

  19. Hearty Dikerson Says:

“If they don’t have the guts to put their names to it, they’re not worth listening to.”

…Says a bunch of guys using anonymous screen names lol

  20. Defense Rules Says:

I continue to be super impressed Joe at how well you chum the water. Boo hoo, we’re being disrespected. Oh woe is us.

Every JBFer on here knows exactly how to stop that crap: JUST WIN. Respect is won on the field, not in blogs. Bucs finished 8-9 in 2022 & then 9-8 in 2023. That makes us a middle-of-the-pack team in these analysts’ eyes … UNTIL WE PROVE OTHERWISE.

  21. Dave Pear Says:

The head coach has accumulated a losing record with two franchises, including playoffs. And, Todd is likely viewed by the respondents as an overrated defensive masturmind. Plus Baker still is the Rodney Dangerfield of QBs, so…..yeah.

We don’t buy that but this is the Bucs life.

  22. Beejezus-belt Says:

If I was an owner I would want to know if one of my dumb ass employees is on this roll call. Sorry about the profanity Joe, but this getting stupid. Toe to the leather boys, toe to the leather!!

  23. BucaneroJim Says:

DR said it… want respect, JUST WIN! Don’t expect the great northern cities to respect Tampa as a city or our team. Heck, even we Bucs since ‘76 have had many years of difficulty respecting our own team. We have some pretty good talent this year -the ball falls in Coen and Bowles hands. Just win.

  24. Bojim Says:

    They will see.

  25. TampabayDJ Says:

It’s probably the same guys who wrote the story , and said it was NFL suits. This was just another jab at our Bucs, who by the way have made them all look bad the last few years. Go Bucs. They will all eat their words by seasons end or sooner

  26. Dave Pear Says:

JBF is a business, the more clicks and posts, the better the business. It’s hilarious how pontificators like to admonish JBF on what they post and how they post it. Same old.

  27. First Name Greatest Says:

    @Stpetebucfan

I don’t get the ATL lovefest either, as they have a QB coming off a major injury, a retread headcoach who was not good in TB, a first time offensive coordinator. But they did add proven players in Judon and Justin Simmons to their struggling defense

The Bucs biggest weakness in 2023 was their run game and pass defense. They added players but unproven players to address their weaknesses, rookies and first round picks are unproven.

Bucs are relying on young players to develop while ATL signed or traded for proven players. As fans we can hope they are upgrades but it is not a given.

Todd Bowles as a Head Coach has never posted back to back winning seasons, he’s not a consistent winner, he has A LOT to prove as a Head Coach

Name call all you want I just deal with facts and the film

  28. Dave Pear Says:

First Name – some fans think it’s ok to give up the 4th most yards passing in a passing league because your points allowed was “low.”

Anomaly. This is the year Todd either calls defensive plays within his teams’ ability to comprehend their coverages and assignments, or the points allowed will correlate to the yards allowed.

Hence why it’s imperative the offense carries the team, as under BA.

  29. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

$100M set on fire by Bowles.

    LOL

    LFG

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Pear … ‘First Name – some fans think it’s ok to give up the 4th most yards passing in a passing league because your points allowed was “low.”

OK David, let’s play. Above is your usual meaningless contribution. Newsflash: Games are not won or lost based on Least Yards Allowed Passing. Try reading the rules of football for a change instead of ‘pontificating’ yourself.

  31. Defense Rules Says:

Pear … ‘This is the year Todd either calls defensive plays within his teams’ ability to comprehend their coverages and assignments, or the points allowed will correlate to the yards allowed.’

Nostradamus you’re not. Since his first year of realigning this defense, Todd Bowles has led this defense to #8, #5, #13, and #7 finishes in Points Allowed. We’ve won the Super Bowl once and made it to the playoffs 4 straight years, despite some major personnel losses. Points Allowed has been very consistent each of those years (355, 353, 358, 325). Interestingly, our best year in terms of Points Allowed (325 points in 2023) was ALSO the year when we allowed the MOST Total Yards (5852) in any of those 4 years. If you insist on continually dumping on Todd Bowles, at least back up your prognostications with facts, even if you continue to cherry-pick through them.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

Pear … ‘Hence why it’s imperative the offense carries the team, as under BA.’

Really? Has it dawned on you yet that loading up the offense with names like Brady, Gronk, Brown, & many other rather expensive veterans was NOT sustainable? Every team in the league has learned that lesson by now, but apparently not you. BA’s system worked when he had The GOAT at the helm surrounded by lots of high-quality veteran talent. When that talent disappeared & we were left with a 45-year-old GOAT, the result was rather predictable.

Let’s see … in 2022 our offense ranked #25 & ranked #20 in 2023. Rather significant drop-offs in performance once the veteran talent left in 2022, but ya, let’s keep on bad-mouthing Todd Bowles as the root cause of all our problems. The only thing that’s been consistent is the performance of his Bucs’ defense.

  33. orlbucfan Says:

DR, you’re on fire!! Ouch! Insulting the Bucs and letting them fly under the bloviating NFL airheads’ radar usually means a good season is in the works. I’ll take it. Go Bucs!!

  34. Dave Pear Says:

Some need to write 7000 words in attempt to obscure performance and results.

I hope Todd’s pass defense can cover a slant, defend a 3rd and 17, and not fold to a rookie QB in the last 30 seconds of a game.

  35. Dave Pear Says:

And just to reinforce the obvious – it’s NFL execs crapping on the Bucs in this article, and the rationale for that are performance based results and facts. Shame that it bruises sensitive skin.
