Todd Bowles Cautions Against “Rookie” Label For Jayden Daniels

September 3rd, 2024

Rookie quarterback chatter.

Yesterday, Bucs coach Todd Bowles was quick to point out that rookie Commandos quarterback Jayden Daniels isn’t yet Pat Mahomes.

While Bowles respects Daniels — and said often how accurate he is — Bowles noted overcompensating for him is a recipe to get lit up by someone else on Washington’s offense.

But Bowles did confess just because Daniels is a rookie that doesn’t mean the Bucs can overwhelm him. Bowles knows this from experience.

“I mean, right team, right fit, you have success [as a rookie quarterback],” Bowles said. “C.J. [Stroud] was a great quarterback last year, and there were a few others. Jayden is probably going to be a great quarterback, as well.”

For those who have done their best to purge the following from their mental hard drives, Houston rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud absolutely lit up Bowles’ defense last year in a 39-37 road loss to Houston in Week 9. Stroud went nuts, throwing five touchdowns and an NFL rookie-record 470 yards.

In fact, it appeared the Bucs won the game when Cade Otton caught a 14-yard pass from Baker Mayfield with 46 seconds left to put the Bucs up 37-33.

But no! Daniels carved up Bowles’ defense way, way too easily, needing just six plays in 30 seconds to score the winning touchdown.

The last thing the Bucs or Bowles need is for Daniels to carve up the Bucs defense for a game-winning score late on Sunday.

But, we mortals don’t understand Todd’s genius. It was lack of communication.

This is a new season and Todd has evolved. Watch!

    LFG

Typo Joe on the 2nd to last paragraph. Should be Stroud not Daniels.

  3. Will Says:

He needs to not be conservative and throw the kitchen sink at the rookie. Please break the curse that this team seems to have for letting rookie and back ups make a name for themselves off playing the Bucs.

The label “Rookie” doesn’t express the feelings a 1st year player may experience when seeing Vita Vea blow up your Left Guard and come charging at you like a bull elephant.

I hope you’re right about Vita and I tend to agree.

Of all the players who had the infamous post SB letdown Vita may have been the most obvious. Weight gain, very good but no longer GREAT play like his SB year.

This is just one of the reasons I’m optimistic. Vita apparently rededicated himself this off season and came into camp very fit and highly motivated.

That’s great news for Buc fans and horrid news for Buc opponents. Vita can be a real disrupter if he’s truly motivated.

I hate to say this, but in the past we have made some rookies from other teams look good. However, that won’t be this season. It sounds and looks like we have a great roster as well as chemistry. Daniels can’t do it all on the Commanders. Focusing on one guy isn’t a team effort.

Can the Bucs edge rushers contain Daniels. I would so, no. If they don’t, watch out, Commanders gonna roll. Washington 24 Bucs 17

Thanx for peeing in my Cheerios, Jeff.

Best to hang back in a loose zone!

Well it’s not like we have a long, ugly history of getting absolutely torched by rookies and backups making their first starts… oh wait!

  11. Larrd Says:

Daniel’s doesn’t have many weapons. Jeremy McNichols made tha team.

    Yes, that Jeremy McNichols. LOL!

Well, I have yet to see any evolution in the DB coverage. In fact, I see the identical coverage in pre-season that we saw in last year’s Houston’s fiasco. Same soft, let them catch it then try and tackle, coverage as last year. I feel like throwing a brick at my TV when it’s third and four and our db is playing 10 yards off. Instant first down. Down the field they go! There is our problem.

Bowles should make sure our Defense is fired up and ready to go. Remember, we traditionally do not fare well against rookies, unknowns and backups.
