NFL Players Say Baker Mayfield Second-Best In…

August 28th, 2024

Mouth of the South.

It ain’t braggin’ if you back it up.

And last year, Baker Mayfield mostly backed it up.

BSPN ran a survey of over 100 NFL players to get their thoughts on many NFL quarterbacks — all sorts of categories, both mainstream and whacked.

Mayfield’s name came up in just one. It seems Mayfield is a Pro Bowl trash-talker. He was voted as the second-best trash talker in the league behind Josh Allen. Aaron Rodgers was third.

Last year Mayfield backed up the talk leading the Bucs to their third-straight NFC South title, wild card beatdown of the Eagles and nearly pulling off an upset in Detroit in the divisional round.

Does Mayfield, or any quarterback, win games because they spout off? Well, that’s a whole different story.

Until BSPN starts putting out legit sports journalism I will take nothing they put out as fact. Even “trash talking”, Players opinions or not. Anything out of those guys is tainted to me. My the mighty have fallen.

    Go Bucs!

  2. garro Says:

BTW I despise all the trash taking in the NFL Most of it is not backed up by actual play. Also shows little if any sportsmanship or class. Wish our guys wouldn’t do it. You wanna be a tough guy? Fine! Do it with your play.

    Go Bucs!

  3. heyjude Says:

What a stupid category trash talking is.

And there is only one Goat, Tom Brady. No one is even close to him. Plus, he retired at 46 years old. So much nonsense with these categories.

  4. BuddhaBuc Says:

I don’t mind the trash talk if it mirrors their play, like Steve Smith’s “Ice up son”. What I don’t like is all the group celebrations before the game is over. Especially the poses for the camera in the endzone. And while I’m on that topic, can’t we come up with a better celebration that rowing an invisible boat? The worst is celebrating a touchdown when you’re behind in the game. Why? I quit defending GMC when him and Kwon where dancing on the sideline and they were down by 20 points. Not a good look. Ok, my grumpy old man switch just flipped, I’m out, hahaha.

It’s supposed to be entertainment. Make it fun. Love it.

  6. Leighroy Says:

I’m digging Mayfield’s swagger. People doubt and dismiss him, and he’s just working away while the talent around him improved this off-season and he got an OC who he’s more familiar with and so far seems to show a semblance of a good offensive scheme.

Baker embodies a pirate mentality, and he’s the right captain for this ship at the moment. Underestimate him at your own peril, you’ll be sleeping with the fishes.

  7. heyjude Says:

    Leighroy – Absolutely. Loving Baker!

  8. infomeplease Says:

BM6 is easy to root for because he comes to play and when the game is on the line, he picks up his game! Should be a fun season.

  9. Buc4evr Says:

It’s not trash talking if you can back it up. Best all time Bucs trash talker = Warren Sapp.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think trash talk can lead to a taunting penalty in some circumstances, but I also think it’s part of the game. Getting in players heads can be valuable.

It can also inspire them to get even.

Don’t really know where I stand on it.

  11. vinny l r Says:

Hard to believe all that moxie and trash-talking produced only a .500 record.

  12. heyjude Says:

Bonzai – Agreed, could be a taunting penalty, and could lead to players even being removed from the game if escalated into a fight.

  13. Buddha Says:

Baker should be a fan favorite. He plays to win and has a mean streak. Around the league, so called experts doubt him. They say last year was a fluke and that his good year was due to Canales. I’m not buying that. He still has a lot to prove. The offense will be a lot better unless injuries derail them. Ceiling is 11 wins; floor is 7.

  14. JK Says:

Vinny, the kid was drafted into the league by the 1-31 Clowns.
    Then they played him hurt
    Grow up

JK Says: “Vinny, the kid was drafted into the league by the 1-31 Clowns.”

That was 6 years ago. .500 with Macho Moxie and Terrific Trash Talking was last year. Try again.

  16. JK Says:

    10-9 last year.
    Mathematics ain’t your strong suit….
Football commenting ain’t your strong suit….
    Hope you’re good at something

  17. NCBuc Says:

Well when you talk about the season, we were 9-8, just above .500. We win a playoff game and then lose a playoff a playoff game with an ill fated pick. There was no way to win that game at that point unless our Bucs played like the late 90’s early 2000’s. As for BM6 playing better when the game is on the line…… Look at our last playoff game…. An INT when we needed a TD. I counted 4 games last season where BM6 was the worst QB in the NFL. It follows him as he is one of the most inconsistent QBs in the league. It’s not hate, it’s just a fact. Trash talk all you want, but points on the board will give you all the attention. It will be a fun season if I don’t see our QB throw for 50% or less in four games in the first half and not lose the game to an INT in the playoffs…… Just saying

  18. JK Says:

NCBuc…….since you “counted”……..how bout that Houston game?

Bake gave em the lead with what …..:37 seconds left????
They lost. His fault??? That would have made them 10-7.

Yall so stupid saying that playoff game the be all end all of discussions on his ability. Fug outta here.

Yall don’t deserve this excellent season your about to be served

    Dumfugs

JK Says: “10-9 last year. Mathematics ain’t your strong suit.”

Baker was 8-8 last regular season and our kicker was 1-0 winning our 17th game 9-0 with his 3 field goals. Baker was atrocious. Then Baker was 1-1 in the playoffs, beating a terrible Eagles team and choking against the Lions. 8-8 and 1-1 = 9-9 = .500. Try harder.

  20. stpetebucfan Says:

    Vinny

You must live with Rod the king of negativity.

More than a dozen teams would love to have had the Bucs record. Even more would have loved to win a first round playoff.

But what is missing is any sense of proportion or reality. That record came after all the salary cap damage brought on by a SB win. It was worth it.

It came after the GOAT blew up his final season, losing his marriage, his courage under fire and his GOAT ability. Again worth it because if I blame Tom for the disaster he left us I have to thank him and praise him for winning his 7th SB here. Again it was worth it.

But it was a very REAL challenge. Licht/Bowles/Baker the entire team can take pride at how QUICKLY they turned looming disaster into a DECENT if not great season and have improved to a good team once again.

In the salary cap era this is amazing but strangely it’s not enough for some!

  21. Chip Revels Says:

When a quarterback runs his mouth at defensive players. It makes them want to hit him a little bit harder. It’s not good for your long-term health to run your mouth at defensive players.

  22. Badbucs Says:

We’re a barely above average team still suffering from 60 million in dead cap not paid to active players this year. We’re making it on some luck, some young guys, some moxie and a little good coaching. It’s a testament to the quality of player Licht is bringing in and their team building. The trash talking just juices them up. Baker is perfect for these young guys.

  23. stpetebucfan Says:

    @Chip Revels

I do not disagree with your post at all. However I would point to another side of that coin. Guys who are more concerned about taking your head off instead of making the right play become a liability.

  24. Kenton Smith Says:

Teams win games. Kickers kick footballs. Anyone who has watched or played football knows this. And the worst QB in football for 4 games? Maybe he was a little off? Bad game plan? Porous OLine? Maybe. It’s a team effort! Some of you guys just need to learn the basics of the game of football instead of galvanizing your idiocy. The main lesson you need to learn is that this team is alot better than last year’s team. Better OC. Better line play. McMillan and Irving! This team is going places. And they could give a rats ass whether NCBuc or Vinny I r goes along for the ride.

  25. Shane Callahan Says:

“Put some weight on little boy” in game 1 last year endeared him to his teammates and cracked me up. (Same game where Baker knew the Vikings defense better than the Vikings did, lol.)

  26. DvaderZ51 Says:

For trash talkin’ QB’s I think Brett Favre still has the lead in that department. I remember he and Sapp used talk S..t to each other every time they played each other.

As far as personal experience. Albeit at a much lower level. I remember our Safety was the king of smack on our team. One game he got a guy so riled up that on a kick off, the dude ripped his own helmet off, threw it down then like a madman, ran 20 yards only to punch our guy in the crown of his helmet. Result was a 15 yard penalty, ejection from the game and a broken hand.
