Todd Bowles Devotee Picks Falcons To Win Division

August 25th, 2024

Yeah, the national media is happily on the Falcons’ bandwagon, but Joe admits to getting a little downtrodden when that includes a Todd Bowles supporter and former teammate — and a guy who knows Baker Mayfield intimately.

Joe is referring to Todd Haley, who was a Cowboys receivers coach under Bill Parcells in Dallas when Bowles was on staff as defensive backs coach.

Those Parcells guys usually stick together. However, Haley was co-hosting on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week and made it clear that he simply can’t pick the Bucs to win the NFC South.

Haley acknowledged his love for Bowles and said he thinks his former QB, Mayfield, could be better in 2024. Haley was Mayfield’s first Browns offensive coordinator in 2018.

So why pick the Falcons?

Haley simply can’t get past how much more quarterback Kirk Cousins will get out of the Falcons’ weapons, especially tight end Kyle Pitts.

Cousins doesn’t have to play great, Haley said, just stay healthy and be close to his usual self, and the Falcons will have enough around him to be very good.

Of course, the Falcons adding Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons and former stud pass rusher Matthew Judon this month has everyone, even Falcons skeptics, looking differently at Atlanta.

We’re going to have to punch a few teams in the mouth to get some respect. Nothing new about that. Can’t wait to get this season started đŸ€˜đŸŒ

  2. Anon Says:

As many weapons as the Falcons allegedly have, they’re still a major downgrade from what Kirk had in Minnesota. Never mind the rough injury to overcome.

And Bucs still beat em on the road.

    Yep!!

  4. BakerFan Says:

Cousins is 16-47 against winning teams

Cousins has a record of 1-4 in the playoffs in his career.

Now explain to me how he lifts play for his teams to win…. You got 17 games you can look at. Thanks for trying.

  5. David Kilmer Says:

Hey Joe, have you taken a look at the Bucs schedule!!. With that schedule I can see why people are picking Atl. I think from what I have seen the Bucs are a better team than last year by far, exception edge rush. I believe Atl is also much better and will be a tough match for the Bucs if Counsins plays well. The whole division appears to be better. With that said and based on the teams Atl plays and the Bucs play, yes it appears the Bucs may find it tough to win the division this year, even though the team is actually better than last year.
I hope I am wrong, but that is one tough schedule for anybody.

  6. Citrus County Says:

Like I have said before; It’s all about politics and prima donnas.

So, to the Bucs I say; Pull a Bogart, flick the butt, and crush it out with your heel.

  7. BakerFan Says:

Time to go shopping on other team’s cuts….

Atlanta Falcons cut Donavan Mutin Linebacker….. The dude had 18 tackles against the Jags and 13 of them were solo.

Preseason he had 28 tackles and like 20 solo

Pick him up, he will have a grudge to settle with Atlanta.

  8. Bobby M. Says:

Bowles is viewed as a consistent 9-8 type coach, he’s not done anything as a HC that wows anyone. If our offense is solid and he rolls out another 9-8 or 8-9 season, I believe the Bucs let him go and promote our OC. The league is designed for offense, Bowles is wired for controlling the clock and playing it safe. He’s had ONE “ok” season in his career as a HC.

  9. Citrus County Says:

I suppose the Bogart reference was wasted.

  10. Lightningvinny Says:

So put your money where your mouth is,,, I did,,, I took the 4-1 for the Bucs to win the division,,,,, whether they do it or not , it’s a solid bet

  11. SlyPirate Says:

    I DON’T UNDERSTAND?!!!

    1) Evans and Godwin are better than London. He’s there #1 and he’d statistically be our #3
    2) White had equal or better numbers than either RB. They had a good OL. Now we have a better OL.
    3) Kirk had JJ in MN!!!
    4) Bucs have a better D.
    5) Bucs know how to win. ATL hasn’t done a thing in 7 years.

Cousins is 16-47 against winning teams

And thru 2021 Mayfield was 7-21. What’s your point?
2022 Mayfield won 4 Gomes so I doubt he put a big dent in his stellar record that season.
2023 3 of 9 were against the Falcons and Panthers. Other six? Mayfield doesn’t impress me enough to put that much effort into it.
You’re the one with the brilliant points so you can finish the Math.

People have been waiting for Kyle Pitts to become ths second coming of Anthony Gonzalez, guess what, he’s a Gator, the land of the underachieving pro players. the last Gators to play up to their NFL potential were Emmitt Smith and Jack Youngblood. Someone should also tell these national scribes that Kurt Cousins is not Tom Brady. Heck he isn’t even a Matt Stafford.

  14. Pewter Power Says:

Haley simply can’t get past how much more quarterback Kirk Cousins will get out of the Falcons’ weapons

REALLY you mean like he got the most out of dalvin cook, Stephon diggs, Adam theilen and Kyle Rudolph.

Damn Kirk Bucs fans really don’t like you and Saints fans I got two words Minneapolis Miracle. This division is gunning for you buddy Atlanta was smart to draft a quarterback

  15. GoneGator Says:

    @FanoftheSouth
Atlanta fan or just a Baker hater?

    Can’t stop us đŸ’Ș

  18. RagingBrisket Says:

Who the hell cares? No one can tell the future so what’s the point of crying about sht like this? We should be a very competitive team this year so let’s enjoy the ride.

  19. Bakerfan Says:

Mouthofthesouth, since you are apparently so ignorant to figure it out I will try to draw you a picture. All you geniuses made Atlanta the favorite after cousins signed. Who made Bucs the favorite after Mayfield signed? After Evans signed, after Wirfs signed? After Winfield signed? NO ONE.

BUT SOME BEAT UP, NO BIG GAME, OVERPAID QB SIGNS AND YOU MORONS MAKE FALCONS THE FAVORITES. GO STICK IT MOUTH, Sell your crazy elsewhere

  20. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

I know the word “great” gets thrown around too loosely, but I don’t think I have ever heard it more than this year when people talk about the great weapons on the Falcons.

The truth is they were DRAFTED to be great, and they SHOULD be great, but it reminds me of when people say all potential means is you haven’t done anything yet.

How much you want to bet with JJ and Addison we are about to see the best year of Sam Darnold’s career?

  21. JSmalls Says:

    This is setting up splendidly!

  22. Let em Bake Says:

    Besides common opponents….

    Falcons: Sea, Pitt ,Jax, Minn.
    Bucs: Dal, SF, Bal, Det.

This is why a repeat for Tampa is going to be tough.

  23. Let em Bake Says:

edit: Falcons have DAL as well…

  24. Idroolpewter&red Says:

This Bucs hatred is setting up the first game against the falcons to be a tone setter for the remainder of the 2024 season.

  25. Dave Pear Says:

The obvious elephant in the room is large and ominous.

Todd’s pass defense is super porous and declining, in a passing league. Now he has good players, but there is no indication that he is going to adjust scheme to fit talents of players. This Haley is saying, he expects Cousins to slice and dice Todd like the veggie choices at a fajita buffet.

His error is, Cousins is the only “highly regarded” QB who Todd always has seemed to have an answer for.

    Good. More bulletin board stuff.

  26. TampabayDJ Says:

Bucs have had a first place schedule for the last 3 years ! Everyone said last year was going to be a brutal schedule , but we still won the division. Our Bucs are a lot better this year, and have a better OC .. Bucs division title again 12-5 , 11- 6 at worst. Go Bucs

  27. Rod Munch Says:

If you watched the Falcons QB play last year, you know all they need is some middling QB play to be the favorite in the division.

In any case, why people get so worked up over this I don’t know. Just go out and win and shut everyone up. But this year isn’t going to be a complete cupcake like last year, I think the NFC South is going to be much much better overall.

  28. heyjude Says:

Cousins does not have Justin Jefferson to throw to any longer. Jefferson had 300+ catches, 29 TDs, and 5k+ yards in 54 games. Now Kirk is just coming back after an injury. I like and respect him as a person, and he might be the mentor in the locker room, but he is way over-rated. What is helping them, is there accommodating schedule.

Let em Bake said, our schedule is tough compared to theirs. Agreed, most definitely. We do have a tough schedule. We can do this. Go Bucs!!

  29. adam from ny Says:

raheem the dream and cousin kirk need to settle in a bit over there before they win anything…

    they ain’t winning sheeeeet !

  30. Permanently Moderated Says:

I got the Bogart reference. One of my favorites.

  31. Defense Rules Says:

Gut feeling is that the NFC South champion will be decided by mid-season. IF the Bucs start off fast & the Falcons start off slow, we’ve got them.

Look at the first 8 games for each team.

o Bucs: Commanders, Lions, Broncos, Eagles, Falcons, Saints, Ravens, Falcons.

o Falcons: Steelers, Eagles, Chiefs, Saints, Bucs, Panthers, Seahawks, Bucs

So we play each other TWICE plus we each play the Saints & the Eagles. If EITHER team has a 2-game lead on the other after 8 games, that’ll be hard to overcome. Easiest way to get a 2-game lead by mid-season? Beat the Falcons TWICE.

  32. drdneast Says:

You don’t win division titles in the summer from ignorant NFL writers who still think the loss of Devin White and Dave Canales is a tragedy like the sinking of the Titantic, you win them on a broiling hot October Sunday afternoon against teams who play in comfy air conditioned indoor facilities and domes. Print all these predictions up and give them to the players so they can belittle the writers when the season is over.
