Impressive “Action Figure” Baker Mayfield

August 21st, 2024

So it seems the Bucs and their beloved fans may see more running this season from Baker Mayfield.

That sounds like a somewhat scary thought, but running back Rachaad White painted that picture of his quarterback without a hiccup during his visit to SiriusXM NFL Radio this week.

White says Mayfield is significantly lighter and leaner this season than he was in 2023.

“I know [Mayfield] had a baby on the way last year, so I kind of know how that feels to gain weight when you’re naturally not trying to gain weight but [you are] because you have a baby,” White said. “I ain’t gonna lie. I be on him. He was bigger last year, for sure, and he talks about it all the time.

“Man, him coming in here just shaving weight and just looking good, looking more explosive, making more plays outside the pocket and stuff like that. [He’s] been awesome in extending plays. I mean, he looks like an action figure. Man, I tell him that.”

Is it a good idea for Mayfield to make more plays outside the pocket, as White suggests is happening? Will Mayfield feel emboldened to scramble more as a result of his transformed body?

Fans and teammates may love it, but Mayfield is not built to take big hits. Bucs honchos were encouraging Mayfield to avoid contact more often last season, even though they loved how his take-one-for-the-team attitude galvanized the roster and helped unify the team.

Regardless, Bucs fans will see a more Tom Brady-looking Mayfield body Friday night when he makes his 2024 preseason debut against Miami. (The Mayfield photo above was taken by the legendary JoeBucsFan.com photographer in Jacksonville last week. Iconic 85-year-old Tom Moore is looking on — wearing pants in the 100 degree heat index.)

If Mayfield isn’t built to take hits then why does he insist on lowering his shoulder to truck LBs. From your mouth to Baker’s ears Joe. Hopefully this new and improved OL along with better decision making from Baker will keep him healthy.

  2. Let em Bake Says:

I predict 5 running td’s for Bake. He will be in the MVP mix by mid-season.

  3. OR Buc Says:

Eh, is it bad that he can escape defenders more readily and create more if something isn’t immediately there. I don’t think so. Maybe he’ll use his speed on runs more than lowering his shoulder. I dig

  4. drdneast Says:

After watching the putrid play of both of our backup QB’s this preseason I can only pray Baker takes care of himself.

  5. Tucker Says:

Easy drd the cult will come after you if you keep that up. One of us

Oh no you did-int . Now face the wrath of the Trask faithful and Baker haters 🤣

I didn’t actually think Trask was that horrible against Jax.

  7. Cobraboy Says:

There is a difference between taking a big hit, and avoiding a big hit.

    Like Warrick Dunn.

  8. Idroolpewter&red Says:

Dude’s got the legs to run away from big hits if he sees a chance.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He’s tough but sooner or later, he’ll go down.

  10. Mac Says:

If that happens TBbucsfan then the seasons over. Trash(k) ain’t leading this team anywhere but the cellar.

  11. Dave Pear Says:

The Bucs mid-season backup QB is not currently on the roster. Somewhere between now and WFT day, Wolford will be released injured and a mobile QB will be signed. He will eventually win the backup job and Bucs go from there. Still – Baker going down is a nightmare, lights out scenario. Bowels’ defense is not going to average less than 22ppg allowed. They’ll be bottom four in yards allowed passing, again. Better have prolific offense.

  12. Esteban85 Says:

Baker may be elite outside the pocket. I feel like his play making ability rises exponentially when he is flushed out and on the run

  13. Jeffrey Becker Says:

so dads gain weight before their babies are born? what, sympathy weight? eating every time mom does?

  14. B Says:

If that run game steps up to near average he won’t have to take all those hits while trying to squeeze blood from a turnip.

  15. Dave Pear Says:

    Jeffrey Becker — LOL!

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe Rachaad thought Baker was carrying the baby or something.

  16. Jonbucsfan Says:

The new Trask action figure comes with a bench and attachable clipboard.

I hope this isn’t like when Josh Freeman went from Big Josh to thinner Josh.

Big J Free was wayyy better than toned up and adderalled-up J Free.

Bake may decide to add weight back afer this season… But we’ll see, obviously

  18. Don'tBmad Says:

To the morons who haven’t actually seen Baker in person….he’s a lot thicker from the waist down than you think. He can take hita with the best of them. I would however be looking for a better back up in the waiver wire….CuzTrask ain’t it

  19. Rod Munch Says:

I like how a Baker team mate is calling him little, and sure enough the Baker Boi(s) are offended and here to tell you that is fake news – in fact Baker is taller than Tom Brady, and weights more than Big Bend too! Also another Baker Boi lets us know Baker is going to be the MVP by halfway through the season!

Completely sane and rational people, indeed.

Fat Freeman was vastly superior to thin in shape Freeman who literally went from like 270lb to having a six pack in a single offseason, it was pretty incredible.

Jameis also lost weight when he went to the Saints, and suddenly started having issues healthy. Sometimes you need that extra padding to take those NFL hits.

However, Baker really isn’t built like those guys, he’s a much smaller guy and doesn’t carry the weight the same way they did – so it probably won’t make a lot of difference.

If Baker really is quicker/faster, that should help him, since last year he’d look like he had a ton of room and could easily pick-up like 10 or 15 yards, and then he’d suddenly get tackled and when you looked at the market, what you thought was a big gain was really for 1 yard. I know the Baker Boi(s) get angry if you say anything remotely negative about their idol, but I’m not bashing him, I just thought it was funny how he looked like he was moving and yet wasn’t getting anywhere. His 40 time at the combine was good for a QB, so if he can get back to that, it should help him.

    Baker is looking fit!

Big kudos and thanks to Tom Moore for being out there in the heat, wearing pants, at 100 degrees. That is dedication and love for the Bucs!

    ^^^^^^^^^

    Hahahaha!

  23. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Do you think any of those runs Baker made last year are going to change? I don’t and I know he’s going to take chances when he thinks that’s his best option at the time. He got his shoulder messed up being landed on and to finish it kinda slung down using his arm to try to stop landing on his face. With or without that facemask our instincts tell us to put our hands out .

  24. Booger Says:

Yeah, might as well. He looked really fat to me last year, too… He had a fathead and was chunky af. Even, a double chin!!!! Hopefully, he’s ‘fit’ enough this season that he can get outside the pocket & find some throwing lanes much better.

  25. Booger Says:

Y’all didn’t know that some (‘REAL’) men mirror and experience the exact same symptoms (&/or) feelings as their pregnant wives!? Did y’all learn anything from “Frasier” when Daphne was pregnant, and Niles was rubbing his ‘nipples’ because they were tender!?

  26. robclwtr Says:

I like Trask, but that comment about the Trask action figure coming with a bench and clipboard is FUNNY!!!

  27. infomeplease Says:

    Joe in Michigan, 😂

  28. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Coach Moore is awesome.

  29. Fan of the South Says:

Of the top 10 QB’s in Total yards this preseason Trask ranked 9th. Of those 10 he ranked 5th in both Passing % and Passer Rating.

Some of the QB’s in that top 10 group were Trey Lance, Mac jones, Sam Howell, Joshua Dobbs, and Mason Rudolph.

Farther down the list there were some QB’s that also played in two games that played not so well and were drafted pretty high.

Trask may not have lit it up but was far from garbage.

Once the Bucs go 3 and outs to start the game he will get plenty of play time.
