Cade Otton Gets High Praise From Former Bucs GM

August 19th, 2024

Joe always pays attention when former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik (2009-2013) is talking Tampa Bay football.

Dominik still works in NFL circles preparing draft picks for scouting combine interviews, and as the SiriusXM NFL Radio draft guru and sometimes co-host.

Today he was on the air talking about his old team.

Interestingly, Dominik talked about how the transition to a new offensive coordinator, no matter who it is, can be an underappreciated and challenging change.

Still, Dominik very much sounded like a guy who thinks the Bucs offense will be better than the unit that ranked just 20th in points scored last season.

Dominik has a level of confidence in Graham Barton and believes rookie RB Bucky Irving will take some catches (yes, catches) from Rachaad White.

“I think the offense is in good shape,” Dominik said, adding that he’s big fan of No. 88.

“I think Cade Otton is an underrated tight end who just does everything very, very, very, very well,” Dominik said of the Bucs’ top tight end. “Maybe he’s not the sexiest guy, but he’s certainly really a good tight end in the National Football League who, you know, has to split catches with all these other receivers.”

Dominik’s question marks for the Bucs come on the other side of the ball — at edge rusher and cornerback, though he believes cornerback Bryce Hall was “a sleeper” signing by the Tampa Bay front office.

That made Joe think again about Hall’s true ballhawk-beast interception in Saturday’s preseason game. It was called back for a penalty, but it illustrated how Hall can be a handful in coverage, as Joe’s seen in training camp.

Otton got better and better as the season went on at snagging that seam-route that Brady always threw to Gronk

  2. Kgh4life Says:

In the playoffs Otton was a playmaker. I wanna see how he’s deployed in the new offense and see if he can take his game to another level.

  3. drdneast Says:

Good lord, Dominick set this teams fortunes back by at least two or three years.
Picking a handicapped Adrian Clayborn instead of Cam Jordan had to be the bonehead move of the decade. I think he was on watch when the Bucs let Michael Bennett walk and Bennett actually wanted to stay.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t know if I’d say he’s very good at a lot of things, but he is good at a lot of things. People who talk him down are your typical dullards that have no idea what they’re watching – who think if you don’t have a HOF player at every spot on your roster you need to immediately replace them, and because he’s not the second coming of Gronk he needs to be cut. But Otton is a solid starter who is still improving.

  5. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Very, very good at everything? Otton is developing as a nice pass catcher, but he is absolutely abysmal as a blocker.

  6. Joe Says:

Hall is a handful all right. Only he’s the one with a handful of a receiver’s jersey.

  7. heyjude Says:

True, Otton has been underrated while still improving. He comes out of nowhere at times. Reminds me a lot of Brate.

  8. Rob S Says:

Why not move Rachaad White to TE?

Praise from one of the worst GM’s in NFL History…

Ouch, there is a reason he never worked in the NFL again after being in charge of the roster here

  10. First Name Greatest Says:

If Bryce Hall played for the Aints or another defense that plays against the Bucs that penalty would not have been called

  11. David Says:

I think he is correct on everything except CB. They are very good and the entire defense can be elite…..
IF they get a consistent pass rush.

Need Kancey and YAYA and VEA to get after it. Hopefully Rameriz and Braswell are the real deal

  12. Dave Pear Says:

Poor Cade. An endorsement from Dumforknik is the kiss of death.

Speaking of the penalty call on Hall’s interception, I didn’t see a penalty. Was it a bogus call? I thought it was a clean pick but was watching on my phone.

  13. BucU Says:

The penalty happened at the receiver’s break early in the route.

  14. Dave Pear Says:

    Thanks BucU. Too bad.

Praise from one of the worst GM’s in NFL History…

    ———-

If you draft a HOF player, you’re not the ‘worst GM in history’.

    David = Future HOF
McCoy = 6x Pro Bowl, 1x ALL Pro
Martin = 2x Pro Bowl, 1x ALL Pro

Also had a QB of the future in Freeman, because the Jersey Trash came along and destroyed his career.

Also drafted William Gholston who is still around, played a big role in the SB run.

For all the whining about Clayborn, he literally played for a decade.

Plus you got late round find like Dekoda Watson, Keith Tandy, Luke Stocker (who played 10 years), Roy Miller (played for 9 years), Mike Glennon (who the Bears wanted to be their starter, played 8 years), Akeem Spence (played for 10 years),

Really when you look at how many of his guys had long careers, the idea that anyone would say he was a terrible GM is just really stupid, comes from a low football IQ.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

    Mark Dumforknik 28-52

Winslow. Revis. Clayton. Bennett. Freeman. Lumpkin. Caddy. A slew of horrors. Raheehaw. Schiamoron.

No job in the NFL post Bucs.

Easily one of the worst GMs in league history.

  17. Bucngator Says:

Just curious. Is Rod Munch the rude football know it all nerd on the ridiculous NFL commercial? Geez.. calling people names and talking down to people with different opinions is so juvenile. The mere fact that he says Freeman was the QB of the future makes his post laughable.

  18. unbelievable Says:

Mark Dominik being their draft guru is “siriusly” ironic, considering his draft record as a GM…

I still enjoy his opinions though.

  19. Bakersbucs says Says:

If he was the worst GM does not matter he did not hire otton so he is also allowed his opinion just like u guys& some of the post on this site r really bad so if the shoe FITS,!!!
