Shaun King: Baker Mayfield Can Win A Super Bowl

August 18th, 2024

Baker Mayfield

There really are only two classes of quarterbacks.

Up on the top shelf are the guys capable of winning a Super Bowl. In the dusty box under the desk are the QBs who can’t win mixed in with the young maybes.

Former Bucs quarterback Shaun King hopped on Cleveland-based The Bullpen with Adam The Bull last week and made it clear that it’s unfair to say Baker Mayfield can’t win a Super Bowl, which was the assertion of the host.

“I would put Brock Purdy and Baker Mayfield’s talent on par with each other and Brock took San Francisco to the Super Bowl,” King said. “And you could make a legit argument that San Francisco probably should have won that game.”

King added that Mayfield has matured since his Cleveland days and now better understands his talents, as well as walking the fine line between cocky and confident as a team leader.

King also seemed to imply that Mayfield’s stature may lead people to think he’s not good enough to hoist the Lombardi trophy.

“When you walk in the mall and you see Baker, it makes you think, ‘I can play NFL football,’ King said, adding it’s opposite opinion for someone who sees DeSean Watson in person, the guy who replaced Mayfield in Cleveland.

Joe’s doesn’t consider Mayfield one of the game’s great quarterbacks, but Mayfield certainly is in that important second tier of QBs that has enough talent, experience and wins to be considered a potential Super Bowl champ.

Potential yes, but judging off the final drive of last season, I’m not so sure.

Look at overtime in this past Superbowl. King compared Baker to Purdy. Purdy at least led his team to 3 pts while Baker couldn’t get the team to midfield…in the divisional round. Meanwhile Mahomes got the walk off TD. That’s the difference. Can your QB lead the team to a TD when it’s needed?

Has Baker improved? Has the TEAM improved?

    We’ll see.

  2. GoneGator Says:

    and Cue the Baker haters….

  3. Tim Says:

I would put Baker Mayfield in the company of a Brad Johnson, maybe a notch better, and he won a Super Bowl albeit with a historic defense. Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl (also with a historic defense). Point being if he’s got the supporting parts, Baker can win one too, no doubt.

  4. ATLBUC Says:

I want to preface this by saying that I think Trask is the better quarterback. But I have to give Baker his due. He had some stretches of bad plays last year but played a lot better in the second half of the season. With the exception of the last drive against the Lions. If the players support him so do I. I think Baker will be a lot better in this new offense and with a good running game he won’t have to force the issue so much. Last season he was put in too many bad situations after 2 runs up the middle had us at 3rd and 8.

    Baker + Coaching = Results

    Coaching is the big question

  6. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

Bull begins to salivate at any opportunity to say something negative about Mayfield…..he and Joy Taylor would make a great couple

  7. mwcgolfer Says:

If Baker Mayfield had been fortunate enough to have been drafted by the Ravens instead of a dysfunctional Browns organization, the Ravens would probably have a Super Bowl or Two. Lamar was lucky he wasn’t in the Cleveland land of oz,, he would have NEVER been a MVP and probably never won a playoff game either. NFL ORGANIZATION MATTERS so does coaching!

  8. Mike Says:

Tim I think baker is more than a notch better than Brad lol baker is just inconsistent.

  9. GoneGator Says:

Baker has a much stronger arm than Purdy. Props to Purdy for being a great story and making the most of his opportunity but I’d take Baker over Brock any day.

  10. Oxycondomns Says:

i hate when i agree on something with shaun king

  11. Dave Pear Says:

Maybe Shaun The Burger King got a few stints in his carotids to get the blood flowing back to his brain and away from his stomach. If memory serves, which is rarer these days, he was a Baker critic.

  12. Rod Munch Says:

Well, I mean King got the Bucs to the NFC Championship game, and would have gone to the Super Bowl if the refs didn’t screw the Bucs.

And even I would say Baker is better than King was, so sure, if King can get the Bucs to one BS call from the Super Bowl, then Baker could get the Bucs to the Super Bowl too…. if he had the 1999 Bucs defense, anyways.

  13. Cobraboy Says:

If Trent Dilfer can win a SB, Baker Mayfield can.

If Trent Dilfer can win a SB, Baker Mayfield can.

    ———

Sure, if Baker has the 1999 Bucs defense, or the 2000 Ravens defense, he can be a champion!

Hey wait, I completely forgot that King was on the 2002 team so actually King DID win a Super Bowl!

  15. Don'tBmad Says:

Judging off of the final drive in Detroit last year….

What a clown and casual comment.

If the 32 teams in the NFL …18 have absolutely no shot at all…the other 14 can go on a run and win the SB

  16. ModHairKen Says:

Of course he can. Trent Dilfer did. So did Brad Johnson. A sixth round pick won 7.

  17. heyjude Says:

A lot of respect for Shaun King. Good guy! Thinking the same as others commenting too. Yes, Brad Johnson got a SB. And Trent Dilfer, Nick Foles,…

Baker did well last season and will be even better this season. Yes, he can win a Super Bowl!

  18. FanoftheSouth Says:

Sure he can and I can win the Powerball as long as I play. My odds of 300 mil to 1 make his 80:1 totally attainable.

  19. garro Says:

LOL…and here I was thinking I might not have to read any blathering from King, Beckless or Simms till next off season… As Lee Corso says…Not so fast my friend!

    Go Bucs!

  20. JK Says:

“Trask is the better QB”…………morons like this really do exist, Virginia

  21. Bee Says:

Lol….clown and casual comment but you didn’t call me a liar or misinformed. Without a historic defense you’ll need your QB to be clutch. Baker isn’t clutch. 🤷🏾‍♂️

  22. Oneilbuc Says:

The only way Baker can win a super bowl you better have a good defense and a good running game and just let him managed the game. And I’m so tired of hearing about the Cleveland Browns was this trash team narrative. Look we all know Huge Jackson was payed extra money to tank and he actually won a lawsuit because the Browns fired him afterwards. Baker had a top o line in Cleveland with 2 good TE, 2 good runningbacks and some good receivers with a good defense. Baker Mayfield has some flashes last year and played good against the Eagles who lost 6 games in a row. He has to play better this year his contract showed what kind of year he had last year . Hopefully he plays better than last year. No more excuses NFC Championship or bust!!

  23. Hodad Says:

Baker should be at the peak of his career age wise. He has a good team around him. No reason to think he isn’t good enough to get it done. Timing is the key to life. This just might be the right time, and place for Mayfield to succeed.

  24. Lord Corn Says:

100%. Dudes balled in his playoff appearances with teams that never had the talent to make ppl think ‘superbowl’…

I’m so stoked for the season

  25. heyjude Says:

Baker with our strong team around him can get us to the SB. No doubt about it.

  26. J McCosh Says:

GoneGator Says: “and Cue the Baker haters….”

Because if you don’t accept what interception-machine Shaun King says you’re a Baker-hater! LMFAO!

  27. heyjude Says:

J McCosh – Unfortunately, we cannot depend on field goals to win games though. We need TDs preferably in the early quarters and keep the lead throughout the end, not giving up. McLaughlin has done well. Not sure what happened to him this preseason. Not worried yet, Only a light concern right now.

  28. KABucs Says:

I loved Sean’s heart and I honestly don’t think he was a terrible QB, his problem was he was too small and his hands were small. I’ve never seen a QB lose too many balls just cocking his arm back to throw. It would slip out of his hands frequently or he would throw a ball that would slip out his hands in motion. It was aggravating. If Sean King was even 6’1″, Baker’s height, and had big enough hands to hold on to the ball, who knows what would have happened. A lot of people comment on Baker like he’s super short but he’s only an inch shorter than Mahomes. I’m not saying Baker is the next Mahomes but they have a very similar skill set and tools. The big difference is a consistent high level of offensive coaching in a proven system. Be curious to see where Baker would be now if he were drafted by Andy Reid and played in his system for a 7 years.
Now Young and Murray, those guys are short… King sized (pun intended). Hand sizes? No idea… not our problem.

  29. Marky Mark Says:

Unless they can prove they have the gift of claravoience nobody really knows who can or will win the superbowl. You put together the best team you can and roll with it.

  30. heyjude Says:

J McCosh – We were Baker’s 4th team last season. Many different coaches too. Even after all that, he did well. Hopefully Coen turns around some things with offense too. Optimistically, I am feeling good about this season.

  31. 1sparkybuc Says:

The Brad Johnson of 2002 could win a SB with this team. I’m not so sure about Baker Mayfield just yet. Shaun King and Trent Dilfer were both just along for the ride. Nobody knows about Kyle Trask. He’s never been in a real game with the starters. Maybe sometime somewhere we’ll see.

  32. StupidMoniker Says:

If Brad Johnson can win a Super Bowl and so can Trent Dilfer, the certainly Baker can. It just requires being on a winning team.

  33. Let ‘em bake Says:

Yes, baker ended the lions game with a pick. People forget we had a chance in that game because of the strike he threw Mike to get us within one score. Take the man’s season in totality . With a last in the league running game. Texans late scoring drive To go ahead ( before Davis meltdown) falcons go ahead score late( nearly blown) perfect qbr against packers, near perfect against jags. Awesome game against eagles in playoffs..there’s a reason he got paid. Prediction: if he equals or surpasses last years success, bucs will rework his contract.. he won’t be 20 plus million a year behind tua, Trevor, etc…

  34. Chappy Says:

I guess we will see in February!
