Baker Mayfield Adjusting From Todd Bowles Defense

August 15th, 2024

The NFL is a no-excuses league, but that doesn’t apply to practice.

And Joe thinks that’s fair. Mistakes and adjustments that take too long are an important part of practice in any sport. So referencing them is not making excuses, even if it sounds that way.

This morning, speaking about some of the Bucs’ Wednesday and Thursday challenges in joint practices with the Jaguars in Jacksonville, Baker Mayfield made a veiled reference to the Bucs’ “busgate” crisis. He also noted that playing against the Jaguars’ defense in practice — without any significant prep for the Jaguars defense — is a reason a practice can get sloppy.

“[The Jags] don’t pressure as much as our defense does. It’s a good and bad thing because we’re so used to having to get the ball out early against our guys,” Mayfield said. “But also when it comes down to a game plan and playing other teams, it’s a little bit more of a simple look. So we’re going to have to slow it down a little bit. Just, you know, consistently deliver the ball to the right spots.”

Mayfield and key offensive pieces are not expected to play Saturday night in the preseason game at Jacksonville.

Mayfield’s next major adjustment will be against the Dolphins during a joint practice Wednesday in Tampa.

I believe he said the Jags were playing a slower and more complicated game. We’re good and getting better.

We are fortunate to have Baker, and where his head is at.

Meanwhile, the way Todd is navigating the preseason is concerning the hell out of me.

How is Todd supposed to know if Rachaad is learning how to be better if he never takes a handoff? Or Braswell rushing the passer when he never rushes? Or the secondary getting sliced like a ham by Joe Burrow and then looking like a 3 ring zone bust circus against Trevor Lawrence?

Not a lot of time to get better.

But at least they went back to two hand touch. That will fix it. N

Every blessing comes with a curse but at the end of the day, if a defense is “softer” it should be easy to tear them apart. Teams with aggressive defenses tend to have aggressive offenses as well, you just have to be able to play against both

I believe Joe, any of em, would say if so, but I’m asking all the same 🙂

    Any Payne Durham update?

    Dave

White had 2 years to get better. He’s an expert at tap dancing and running full speed into the OL. He has bad vision and for the best RBs in the game it doesn’t take 3-4 years to get better at it. Give the rooks the rock and let White do what he does best…catch passes in space.

WW, the last I heard all tests on the knee were negative and he’s considered day to day. Another bullet dodged it seems.

Some rest now will be good. Can’t wait to hear about the practice with the Dolphins next week!

I’m not sure why, but I think I feel better that the Bucs have things to work on. It lets them know that they aren’t going to just show up and win the division. They have to have that dawg mentality. Had they gone out the last couple of days and just torched the Jags then they might start to think they are good. I can remember some seasons where the Bucs started out fast and got a big head and the season came crashing down. At least they know that they have a long way to go. The Jags and the Dolphins are two pretty good teams. The competition is good for the Bucs as a team.

It’s practice which means not perfect plus u don’t show u r cards u guys act like they r supposed to kickers no matter what plz drink u r damned beer & relax it is practice

  10. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Plus burrow carved up our 2nd team against there starters plz think before u speak

  11. Dave Pear Says:

Um…Desmond Ridder carved up Todd twice in 2023, especially when it mattered most . If Todd is getting carved I don’t care if it’s starters or busboys. Getting carved means they don’t know what they’re doing. Not they’re just getting beat because they know their assignments.

It’s the masturmind’s genius blind spot. Lots of smarter people can’t teach the lesser intelligent.

Instead of talking about the Bucs playoff winning/ Pro-Bowl MVP, let’s wish Trask luck this weekend and hope he can get a lead on the #2.

Um Davie Pearless, if it wasn’t for TB’s defense in the final game of last year….. It would’ve been the saints in the playoffs and not our Bucs. Criticize TB all you want, but at the end of the day his D kept the other teams O out of the end zone. Just some facts for you to consider
