Bucs Training Camp 2024: Practice No. 13 Notes

August 12th, 2024

Bucs offense in walkthroughs Monday.

Sad views of the practice fields at One Buc Palace today. First, it was a return to full-blown underwear football. No pads, no “shells.” Just helmets with the Great Gazoo caps. No fans. Deconstruction of the bleachers had begun to the point they looked like aluminum skeletons.

* Baker Mayfield dumps off a pass to the right for Bucky Irving and he doesn’t get much as a gang of Bucs defenders met him at the line.

* Kyle Trask throws to Mike Evans along the right sideline and Evans beats Bryce Hall for the ball.

* Trask throws to Ryan Miller along the left sideline and Miller just gets his feet inbounds.

* Trask to Tanner Knue on a short pass to the left sideline.

* Ramon Jefferson runs right and there is no room for the Kentucky product to run.

* Volleyball: Mayfield throws for rookie receiver Jalen McMillan to the left near the left hashmarks but he couldn’t hold on. The ball bounced forward. There, Devin Culp was Johnny on the spot for the catch.

* For some reason McMillan is wearing a black jersey without a number on it.

* Mayfield throws to the left sideline for Chris Godwin and Lavonte David jumps the route and nearly had a pick. He did knock the ball away.

* Mayfield threads the needle throwing through a crowd and hitting Evans in the back of the crowd. Must have been close as the defense, both the guys on the field and those watching on the sidelines, let out a giant moan when Evans pulled away from the crowd with the ball.

* Trask connects with McMillan down the left side.

* Mayfield throws for McMillan also down the left sideline and McMillan gets his feet inbounds before going out of bounds. The play happened right in front of Jamel Dean who was close but not close enough.

* Before the next play is snapped, Joe could hear offensive coordinator Liam Coen holler in a not-so-happy tone of voice, “Time out!”

* Both Coen and offensive line coach Kevin Carberry bring a lot of energetic chatter to practices each day. Juice! Both are quite vocal.

* McMillan gets a dump-off pass to the left from Mayfield.

* Godwin catches a Mayfield pass over the middle.

* Looked as though there wasn’t a clean handoff on a run play (Joe was screened and couldn’t get the numbers) but veteran free agent defensive lineman Eric Banks fell on the loose ball for a recovery.

* Trask throws short to Cody Thompson on the left side and he has a convoy in front of him.

* D.J. Williams takes a pitch and runs left.

* Jefferson catches a Trask pass in the left flat.

* Jefferson runs up the middle angling right.

* For some weird reason whenever Joe types Jefferson’s name, he thinks of linebacker Charles Jefferson of “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” fame.

7-on-7/Red zone

* Mayfield throws over the middle for Cade Otton for six.

* Mayfield throws to Rachaad White down the left seam.

* Mayfield connects with Irvin along the right sideline near the goal line.

* Mayfield to Otton down the right seam for a score.

* Otton catches another touchdown pass from Mayfield in damn near the identical play. David dove along the goal line but couldn’t get a hand on the ball. Mayfield celebrates by squatting down and shooting (imaginary) pistols with both hands. Gunslinger!

* Evans catches a throw from Mayfield just across the goal line along the right sideline.

* Joe couldn’t tell who Trask was throwing to in the far right corner of the end zone but Joe did see rookie UDFA corner Marcus Banks sky to break up the pass.

* Otton catches a touchdown pass from Trask over the middle.

* Trask was throwing to someone deep in the end zone and J.J. Russell came racing in from the right, dove and knocked the ball down at the goal line.

* John Wolford has a pass broken up in the end zone, this time by Keenan Isaac.

* Rookie UDFA receiver Latreal Jones jumps in front of Isaac to catch a touchdown pass from Wolford on the left side.

11-on-11

* Mayfield throws to the right for Godwin for a screen pass and Godwin has a convoy of blockers in front of him.

* Mayfield looked right but saw Anthony Nelson collapsing the pocket from the right. He then throws to the left sideline for Otton.

* Irving runs to the right but there’s not much there.

* Joe just realized and is pretty sure he hasn’t seen White run the ball once all practice. Make of that what you wish. Is Bucs coach Todd Bowles sending another message? Joe recalls a practice early in camp where the only time White ran the ball was with the third team, though he caught several passes that same practice with the first team.

* Mayfield throws a bullet down the middle over the middle for a diving Trey Palmer just enough for a first down, some 10 yards downfield.

* Trask to Sean Tucker down the left sideline for a short gain.

* Coen doesn’t like what he sees after the Bucs break the huddle. “Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Timeout! Huddle up, please!”

* Trask connects with Knue on a short pass to the left sideline.

* “No huddle, let’s go!” Coen barks.

* Thompson catches a short pass down the left seam from Trask.

* White catches a pass from Trask short along the right sideline.

* Godwin on a short pass down the left hashmark and Mayfield gets him the ball.

* Mayfield sidearms a short pass to the right hashmark for Miller.

* Irving catches a short pass from Mayfield on the left side.

* Wolford the victim of a coverage sack.

* Mayfield is flushed up the middle.

* Mayfield is sacked as the pocket fully collapses around him. Joe couldn’t tell who it was that got to Mayfield but seemed like the entire defensive front caved in the offensive line.

* Irving up the middle.

* Irving up the middle, angling towards the right.

* Mayfield to Palmer along the left sideline on a short pass.

* Mayfield links up with McMillan over the middle for about 15 yards.

* D.J. Williams ends practice with two runs up the middle, the second run he angled to the right.

No practice on Tuesday as the Bucs travel to Jacksonville. The Bucs and Jags are scheduled to have two joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday.

  1. Durango 95 Says:

Good training camp notes as always. Hopefully JBF will be heading to Jax later in the week. Those notes will be really interesting to read. Can’t wait for that coverage.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

BTW, the Bucs sent out an email saying their ‘season passes’ (yuck, they’re season tickets you punks) are sold out.

Is that true, they really sold out for the year? Sounds impossible, but that’s what they claim. Good for them if true.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

“Mayfield celebrates by squatting down and shooting (imaginary) pistols with both hands. Gunslinger!”

I think it’s now called the Baldwin.

  4. Scott Says:

Otton sounds to be getting a lot of looks. Fantasy breakout year?

  5. SlyPirate Says:

    1. Lavonte David missed INT. You know he’ll hear about that one from Bowles.

    2. No White! Hmm? Bucky, Tucker, Jefferson were really good. Post-game Bowles said, “The running backs were decisive unlike our runners from last year.”

Sounds like everyone played. White isn’t hurt. SO …
    A) Is White on the outside looking in?
    B) Are we packaging White for Haason Reddick?
    C) Does White have an illness or injury?

    This is interesting!

  6. Dave Pear Says:

Rod, that is excellent news. Hopefully the buyers are Bucs fans and actually show up to the games rather than selling them to Aints and Falcons fans.

  7. Bee Says:

No mention of the pick Mayfield threw at the end of practice?

And it’s a good thing White is running less. He’s a WR. And if he’s doesn’t start this year or gets less touches then it wasn’t ALL on the blocking last season. He constantly tap dances to run into the back of OL. More Bucky please.

  8. Shane Callahan Says:

Trask dominated again! He must be the starter! Lol

    Great stuff, Joe. Thanks!

  9. kaimaru Says:

    @Rod,

I don’t have the option to purchase, only to be put on a waitlist, so I would say yes

  10. D-Rok Says:

    * For some weird reason whenever Joe types Jefferson’s name, he thinks of linebacker Charles Jefferson of “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” fame.

In that movie, that man-boy was a beast. Great movie, cuz dudes on ludes should not drive.

ROFL!!!! Good one, Joe. I can tell you were not born in the 2000’s.

  11. Dave Pear Says:

What exactly makes anyone think Trashk dominated anything?

It was practice. Sounds like the QBs made some plays. Trashktards love to pretend. The boy is lucky to be holding a clipboard. Don’t ask me, listen to Todd.

Wanted to see him rifle the ball more. He’s always been a fluffer.

  12. Beeej Says:

Sterling Sheppard has been invisible, is he done?

  13. Joe Says:

    is he done?

    Hurt.

That’s interesting, it just doesn’t feel like there’s a lot of a buzz around the team locally, not that people are down on the Bucs, but I don’t get the sense there’s a lot of excitement either. But great to see they’ll be playing in front of big crowds all season, a good atmosphere can really help in close games.

  15. Shane Callahan Says:

Wish Sterling hadn’t gotten hurt. He’s a stud but might be done. 😒

  16. Cobraboy Says:

White is the #1 RB and did not play like mist of the #1’s.

Besides, we needed to see what Irving and Tucker have.

Edmonds could lose his spot if he doesn’t get out of the tub based on Irving and Tucker’s mojo…

  17. Fred McNeil Says:

Thanks for the excellent notes, Joe. Why am I reading them at 3:40 AM? I dunno. Going back to bed. Gnite….

  18. heyjude Says:

    Great notes! Thank you, Joe.

Hoping Jalen can take off the “can’t hit me and no number” shirt for the Jags practice and isn’t sore. Shepard and Jarrett too. Sounds good for Trask today.

In regards to the puffy guardian caps – It seems that the dark caps would be more more hotter then having light colored caps in the sun, heat. It’s too bad they couldn’t make them better for Bucs trainings outside.

  19. HC Grover Says:

Knue with a Great Gazoo hat.

  20. orlbucfan Says:

Bowles hinted that we may see a few more of the first string (besides the kickers) play in this next game. He and his staff only have 2 more games to evaluate the newbies. Coen sounds like he’s a character as well as being a good OC. I hope he starts doing more QB rollout calls. BM and the QBs will have no problem executing them.

  21. simple man Says:

13 passes by Trask + 2 passes by Wolford = another Bowles fake competition lol

  22. Jay Buc Says:

Can’t believe you don’t know that the black shirts mean, “don’t hit”.

  23. Joe Says:

Can’t believe you don’t know that the black shirts mean, “don’t hit”.

Joe does know the quarterbacks wear “don’t hit” jerseys which are creamsicle.
