Todd Bowles Is Absolutely Right About Trey Palmer

August 8th, 2024

Speed kills.

Yesterday, Joe highlighted Bucs coach Todd Bowles discussing how Bucs speedy receiver Trey Palmer needs to improve or at least hone his “underneath stuff.”

And no, Joe doesn’t believe Bowles was referring to a Manscaped product.

Joe firmly agrees. Anyone remember how the Bucs punked the Eagles in the playoffs last year? Palmer scored a key touchdown in the game when he caught a short pass at midfield, made a defender miss and fired his jets.

Yes, Joe knows the Bucs want to stretch the field with Palmer because of his speed. But Joe is of the mind he is more versatile and his touchdown against the Eagles in January proved it.

Palmer is so lightning-quick beginning his routes you can’t tell Joe that speed can’t get a step on some defenders early. That means he ought to be open.

Speed kills. Space is dangerous. The Bucs have that speed in Palmer. Use his ability to get open quickly and Joe is confident Palmer would morph into a serious offensive weapon.

Combine that with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin and the Bucs will give a lot of NFL defensive coordinators migraines.

He has got to hold on to the ball and he’ll be fine.

That and I hope he has worked on his blocking skills. I remember a few nice runs getting called back for holding downfield. I know, nit picking. But these are the details that matter. Games are too close.

  3. JimBobBuc Says:

Agree. Palmer has to work the JUGGS and stop the mental mistakes like holding. From Joe’s notes, I trust J-Mac more than Palmer.

  4. BucsFan55 Says:

needs to be a little more physical to not fumble and yea hes good to go

  5. Jason Says:

Try him on some wr screens maybe?

Love the video. We forget sometimes about those explosive plays. Thanks for the memory. Trey is only 23 years old and will be good to go this season. Go Bucs!

  7. BucVoyager Says:

He was misused. Plain and simple.

Its about running routes consistently and finding the soft spots in zone. It amazes me how often guys get to the NFL and can’t run routes. speed or not. Heck how often did we have two and three guys in the same place on the field last year. That was just plain weird.

Leads me to believe there is a shortage of good coaching across the board in college. TEs can’t run block, RBs can’t pick up blitzes, DBs blow coverages LBs can’t tackle….

    Go Bucs!

    Don’t forget QB’s (Heisman Winners) can’t throw

He improves those hands and he could be deadly.

But from what we’re hearing / reading about training camp, it seems J-Mac is already ahead of him when it comes to just knowing where to find those holes in different zones… Some guys just get it. But the cool thing about Palmer is he can be used for short, intermediate or deep routes. Not sure J-Mac has the deep threat potential (similar to Godwin).

In any event, we’ve got some serious playmakers on offense between our top 4 WRs and R. White. We should be able to do some serious damage if the o-line can do their jobs.

garro, I agree about the lack of proper coaching.

So it brings the question, what are Todd and his coaches doing to mandate Palmer get better? Just saying he needs to be better is not enough.

@ A Bucs Fan:: “He has got to hold onto the ball and he’ll be fine” Sounds like maybe #13 even more so than #10.

Yeah Joe I understand where you are coming from even D More showed that . I guess you kinda catch the defense in a transitioning area and all of a sudden, a quick stop and catch and bye bye.. Yes he can fly!! It seems like we have how many receivers if you could the ones coming out of the backfield ? Trick Plays. Let’s Go Bucs!!!! The only thing we have to do most is avoid beating ourselves!! This looks like the last Superbowl on our home turf season. They’re young but if they execute I believe we go far.

  15. Danati74 Says:

Ya both him and j mac will play alot of snaps from the 3rd n 4th receiver spots.coen will playro their strengths. On plays where theyneedspped to open the field it’s Pamer, on plays they need precise route running it’s j mac. Probably same thing with TEs…Otten will play alot of snaps, but when they need speed it will be Culp. The TE from last year’s draft would-be used in RedZone n intermediate routes

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Kind of surprised that AJ Brown is that high on the list – that’s a big dude to have that burst. Also Curtis Samuels is there? He’s in Buffalo now, and they don’t have a number 1 WR, and Samuels is dirt cheap in fantasy. Also, you might be able to get some good prop bets for Samuels as their depth chart in Buffalo stinks, so by default he should put up some numbers.
