Chris Godwin Turns In Play Of Training Camp

August 6th, 2024

Never gave up.

Chris Godwin is a pro’s pro. He may not be a Hall of Famer but he’s a damn good player. And part of that is being the ultimate pro.

Godwin demonstrated this in today’s training camp practice. Yes, we’re talkin’ practice.

Godwin may have taught a talented rookie what it means to be a pro.

Let’s set the scene: Early in practice, Baker Mayfield tried to hit rookie receiver Jalen McMillan down the right seam and underthrew him for an interception by rookie free agent Marcus Banks (Mississippi State).

As soon as the pick was made, it appeared McMillan gave up on the play. He was frustrated because, Joe assumes, how the play developed. Joe gets that. Joe gets these guys have high standards and get peeved when a play goes bad.

The fact McMillan was frustrated is noble in Joe’s eyes. But that doesn’t mean you give up on the play! While Joe is confident McMillan didn’t mean to give up, his body language suggested otherwise.

Godwin quickly provided an example to McMillan and all the young Bucs that anything can happen if you don’t give up.

Mayfield tried to connect with Godwin down the right seam. Instead, veteran corner Tavierre Thomas got the pick. Or so everyone at practice thought. Godwin had other ideas. As Thomas turned around to begin a return, Godwin smartly ripped the ball out of Thomas’ hands and took off downfield for a touchdown.

If this happened in a regular season game, this play by Godwin would be replayed the rest of our lives.

Godwin could have easily let his emotions get the best of him and watch Thomas try for a pick-six. Instead, Godwin kept his focus and turned a bad play into a touchdown.

So, the moral of this story is boys and girls, never ever give up on a play. Never let your emotions get the best of you.

None of us can tell what may happen next. Unless you throw in the towel.

Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are the best things that’s every happened in my life, I think and hope that JMAC and TP10 can be that same duo for the next 10.

  2. kgh4life Says:

Mayfield has been really bad on deep throws: passes falling short or just out of reach for wrs. Does the coaching staff or Baker think it’s not a concern?

  3. Joe Says:

Not concerned enough to have kept the Bucs from re-signing him or drafting his replacement.

Mayfield had some bad throws on short passes today too.

  4. Dave Pear Says:

Maybe time to sit Baker in the Accountability Tent and ask WTF is wrong with him.

  5. NJbucs23 Says:

    Stud.

  6. Baker Bowl Says:

@kgh4life @Joe I am convinced that Baker is our guy for at least the remainder of his contract. I value his drive for winning and getting the extra yard on every play. Honest question, am I delusional? Yes, he had a career year with (relatively) average stats, but we also were just about 1 play off the NFC championship game with a team that no one thought would compete in the regular season.

  7. Jeffrey Becker Says:

    a public service announcement

  8. Dave Pear Says:

Todd should call BA and ask him to spend a few days a week exclusively focusing on Baker’s footwork and mental game. Touch love. Come on, let’s go. This is no time for a regression.

  9. Commander Says:

Dave pear; this is no time for a regression.
Are we talking practice and not a game.

  10. Dude Says:

“Mayfield tried to connect with Godwin down the right seam. Instead, veteran corner Tavierre Thomas got the pick.”

Sounds like the first INT he threw as a Buc week 3 of last season.

Yea, it’s practice, but there are players on every team all around the league telling the press pool “you practice like you play”

Also, @DavePear you have to make some progress to have anything to regress from otherwise it’s the same ole same ole

Did anybody stop and question whether or not Mayfield got any better this offseason? Or we just holding tight until week 1?

  11. Shane Callahan Says:

Yeah, I guess it is time to go 100% against what his teammates and coaches think and go with Baker haters on this thread think and sit Baker. Man, I’m so glad there are so many gurus on this site that know more than the experts.

  12. D Cone Says:

but we also were just about 1 play off the NFC championship game

Was the one play the 2nd and 5 play with just over a minute and a half left in the game?

Yes and no, that was definitely a throw I’d make in madden so not a throw any NFL QB should be staring down like that, I meant an INT that Jamel Dean dropped (I could be making that up, memory is not my strong suit)

I sure hope Todd has learned this lesson!

Interceptions = bad, you don’t have to be John Madden or Greg Cosell to realize that, but salute to Godwin for saving Bakers’ bacon. We’ll need some of that in the regular season.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

Hey boyz, I’m a big Baker supporter. Also, we have nothing else NFL worthy in the QB barn should he go down or underperform. I had hopes for Wolford but apparently he’s making Mike Glennon look good.

It’s Todd’s way to tolerate mistakes and underperformance from players. Diva, Davis, last year’s Stump, Vita, The Oaf, JTS. Last year’s Canalwater. Baker himself said he needs some tough love some time.

Give it to him. Nobody better than BA for that.

  17. JK Says:

I remember a practice last year that went viral where Mayfield badly overthrow the end zone corner practice net …….he got clowned all over social media………and then I watched him make the same throw, a dime to Otton…….for a game winning TD WHEN IT COUNTED

Moral of the story…….those clowning that overthrow in practice last year, and any INTs in camp this year……are just that, 🤡s

  18. Greg Says:

I went back and watched last season on YouTube highlights. Baker was fun to watch. He does have a tendency to be inconsistent though. My guess is he’ll be fine and an improved running game should help a great deal. He pulled off a lot of low percentage plays last year and it would be nice if he didn’t have to do that this season.

    ^^^^

Being born might be up there.

(There is also family, health, friends, air, vacations, BBQ. But Godwin and Evans are pretty awesome.)

  20. OR Buc Says:

Ask Antoine Winfield about never giving up on a play.

I would normally agree, but only Godwin and Evans (and Baker soon) have given me a Super Bowl

  22. Joe Says:

Ask Antoine Winfield about never giving up on a play.

    Indeed!

  23. captivajim Says:

Godwin is , by far , the best receiver on the team.

  24. drdneast Says:

Godwin may not make the Hall of Fame but with the money he has made he is leaving his family a legacy worth millions. I would prefer that over the HOF any day.

  25. DC Says:

eh when I went to tc last year and this year baker wasn’t good either. Ive come to the realization some people just aren’t great awesome practice players. Im almost sure hes one of them. Bakers a gamer when its real brings out his best so I take his good and bad practices with a grain of salt.

  26. Booger Says:

HOF = “family legacy” AND the millions of dollars. There’s no one broke heading to the Hall nowadays, unless they’re really stupid (&/or) had some very poor luck. Baker has to stay within himself, & just play SMART protecting the ball.

  27. Mark Says:

Godwin was an example to everybody except Winfield.

  28. Mark Plant City Says:

Morale will not improve until McMillan gets his head up!

  29. The Fighting Schianoes Says:

It’s practice you bunch of keyboard warriors. Jesus Christ! This is what camp is for. Working out the kinks, and none of you genius’ know if the throw was meant to be back shoulder and the receiver fudged it.

  30. Kenton Smith Says:

Can’t overstate the lesson learned by the rookie today. Thanks Godwin. That’s the way great football seasons get started.

  31. 슬롯사이트 Says:

Instead, Godwin kept his focus and turned a bad play into a touchdown.

  32. Pete Says:

100% agree. A pro’s pro since he arrived in Tampa. Go back and watch the film when Jameis was his QB–the number of times CG played “defensive back” breaking up errant Jameis passes. A complete football player.

  33. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Isn’t this yesterday news cause today baker is on fire wtf let baker get his kinks out in practice I wud think he tries different looks getting prepared for Sunday games plz pay attention its important not to run u r mouth while they get prepped for the real deal another words STFU
