Todd Bowles Raves About Kyle Trask

August 4th, 2024

Props from Todd Bowles.

What a difference nine practices make.

On the first day of training camp, Bucs backup quarterback Kyle Trask looked awful. It may have been the second-worst practice Joe has seen from the former Gators star.

Fellow backup John Wolford looked sharp on the same day. The contrast was so wide, Joe wondered how secure Trask was for the No. 2 quarterback gig.

Fast-forward to yesterday and thinking Wolford is better suited to be Baker Mayfield’s immediate backup is laughable. Trask looks competent; Wolford appears headed for the unemployment line.

Yesterday, head coach Todd Bowles raved about Trask and it sure seems from Bowles’ words and watching Trask practice he’s got the No. 2 gig locked up.

“I think Kyle [Trask] is having a heck of a camp,” Bowles said. “Yeah, he missed a few today – you gotta to make those. You gotta make the big plays. But running the offense and understanding it, we’re very comfortable with where Kyle is right now. He is making great strides for us and we’re pleased.”

This past week, it seemed each day Trask had at least one picture-perfect pass. All of them on the deep ball. You know the kind: Like a classic dropback quarterback standing tall in the pocket and winging it downfield on the money.

One play Joe hopes to never see Trask run is designed rollouts. Remember how Bo Jackson ran (or tried to run) with a hip replacement? Trask running on rollouts isn’t a whole lot different.

It’s awkward; it’s ugly; it’s unnecessary. Let him sit in the pocket and wing it. That is, if he ever plays again for the Bucs.

  1. Hodad Says:

How funny would it be if Trask becomes the only drafted Buc QB who gets a second contract?

  2. Dude Says:

Trask gets respect from me for what he’s done and likely still doing trying to get Bucky on the fast track. To dissect film & narrate concepts so Bucky basically has the playbook in an audiobook format says a lot about Kyles’ worth & selflessness as a teammate. Might not ever start a full season as Bucs QB, but he’s still making himself an asset to the squad.

  3. REP Says:

I always like Trask…He had character and guts. Would love to see him make not only 2nd in line but be pushed to #1 and might surprise a lot of people.

  4. Beeej Says:

I too am interested in what is gonna happen to him following the season. I expect the Bucs would offer him a few million per year as the #2, or would he bet on himself and go somewhere like Carolina (after the kid fails for the SECOND year) and try for the starting job?

  5. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

The Bucs need to re-sign him for 2025 if they can get him for a reasonable amount. He’ll have a year experience in this new offense and can come in and win some games if necessary.

That said, I understand if he wants to go somewhere where he can compete for the starting job.

  6. Bakersbucs says Says:

Hay Kyle trask is a friend of holding the I pad on the sidelines I am humming this as I rite like it’s a singable rhyme

  7. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Didn’t Mike Glennon get a second contract with Bucs

  8. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    No

  9. Dadgumit Says:

    More wasted keystrokes.

  10. Daniel Hammond Says:

If he doesn’t play for the Buccaneers this year I hope he does get a chance somewhere because I definitely think he can be an NFL quarterback I love my Buccaneers and I want to have him as a quarterback but at the end of the day he can be an NFL quarterback he doesn’t need to be a backup hopefully it’s not another Steve Young kabako and he goes somewhere else and win Super Bowls

  11. Bee Says:

Every time he’s gotten an opportunity he’s excelled. I don’t think that’d change now. We’ll see what happens

  12. Capt Jimbo Neal Says:

Damn, that Dave Pear sure disappeared fast what with his rants about Wolford beating out Trask going up in flames 😂.

  13. Bubby Says:

    Pumping up Trask’s trade value.

  14. Conner50 Says:

Here we go again Trask looking really good in camp probably looking better than mayfield as well but too bad he won’t play. Unless Mayfield gets hurt which isn’t the way I wanna see trask get to play. Would be a bucs life if we let him go to free agency after this year and he wins a starting job and does well, which I believe he can he’s done it his entire career.

  15. JD Still Says:

After the way he has been treated , mismanaged , and flat out lied to, would you resign with the Bucs or follow the path of Steve Young, Doug Williams , and Trent Dilfer?

  16. Fred McNeil Says:

No, he just likes pulli” people’s chains.

  17. Mike Says:

This is great news. Trask is very capable of holding that #2 and pray he won’t be, but if he is needed. I know this guy will be ready to go. I am just looking forward fo watching what he does during these pre-season games. Go Bucs.

    Well said!

  19. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Trask had absolutely no hope of starting the 1st two years of his career stuck behind Brady and Gabbert and it showed in his pre season play, but he did always show one thing and that was no fear in the pocket to throw down field. Last year he showed the greatest improvement ever and that’s why these fakerboi fan girls hate him. Baker has been handed the reigns his entire career but has NEVER shown any marked improvement each year. Trask had a chance to be the 1st Bucs drafted qb ever to be given a 2nd contract but because of Blowles buffoonery of a head coaching job in Brady’s last season was forced to go with his hen picked favorite qb to save his job. Trask will come back to kick the Bucs in the butt one day after he leaves.

Bakersucs you need to take the Bucs out of your name because you’re his fanboi not the Bucs. You “dudes” are such clowns. The good thing after they cut him after next year is that most of you nut jobs will disappear with him.

  20. Robbie Says:

@DavidBigBucsFan99 Well said my friend, well said!! Go Trask!!

  21. heyjude Says:

Trask has grown on me and I am glad he is doing well. Sounds like he will be the number one backup again for Baker.

  22. Permanently Moderated Says:

We’ve heard ad nauseum about how good Trask is, yet he has rarely sniffed the field. He’s now ahead of Ryan Griffin as the best quarterback who’s never played the game.

  23. Capt Jimbo Neal Says:

JD Still Says: “After the way he has been treated, mismanaged, and flat out lied to, would you resign with the Bucs?”

    I wouldn’t and he won’t.

  24. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, the Bucs have TOTALLY abused Trask for paying him $1 million + a year to hold a clipboard. 🙄

  25. My Momma Says:

Joe, how ugly was he running up the middle multiple times this week?

  26. Buccos Says:

We may have the best qb room in the NFL. Trask may be the best backup qb in the league. Of course we don’t know this for sure but we can hope

  27. JD Still Says:

Permanently Moderated: I think you are beginning to comprehend the problem, now, what could possibly be done to see if he is as good as many people think he is, before he walks and adds to our miserable NFL leading record of letting quarterbacks go to other teams and them leading those teams to Super Bowl victories ?

  28. Joe Says:

How funny would it be if Trask becomes the only drafted Buc QB who gets a second contract?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! He just might! Seriously, Joe could see that happening.

  29. Joe Says:

Joe, how ugly was he running up the middle multiple times this week?

Not that ugly but him on a rollout and then trying to stop and pop — just no, please. Misusing the guy’s talents.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Let him sit in the pocket and wing it. That is, if he ever plays again for the Bucs.’

I can’t believe that you chummed the water with that last line Joe and only Jimbo bit. IMO Jason Licht & Todd Bowles are building a TEAM that’s not nearly as QB-dependent as most NFL teams are. I have every expectation that if Baker went down for several games, Kyle could step in and manage the offense quite efficiently, and our probability of winning any particular game wouldn’t change all that much.

Big IF … but IF Trask gets to play this year and does well, he’ll be in hot demand and the Bucs won’t be able to keep him. If he doesn’t get to play, I expect that he’d bolt to a team that offered him an opportunity to compete for the starting QB gig. If he stays here, he’d very likely be a backup for life.

  31. Booger Says:

Yeah, right LoL… “BEST Quarterback Room In The League” Lmao. Hahahahaha That is SO laughable. Yeah, led by a former #1 overall pick, now inconsistent ‘middle-of-the-road’ journeyman QB in Baker Mayfield and a back-up, who has never even hardly, played a single DOWN in The NFL… Yeah, Okay! I believe I would take Kansas City’s. Get outta here, with all that biased bull hockey. THIS is a real site!!!!

  32. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I’m impressed how he’s just done his job and been supportive. You never know what will happen or how long mayfield can stay healthy with his aggressive nature.

  33. FanoftheSouth Says:

Either Trask will get his shot with the Bucs or somewhere else. Throw out the 2 years there was no chance he would play with Brady and the year that Bowles could take the risk and Mayfield having an up year he really hasn’t had a real chance to get on the field.
If up and down roller coaster that is Baker Mayfield continues as it has over the last 6 seasons he could end $30 million a year back up.
That wouldn’t be for long as he would whine to be traded as he did in Cleveland.
Bucs will end up paying the Lions Share, next team will be chipping in a bit and Mayfield himself will give up a third just to have a chance to stay relevant.
Going to that well only lasts so long.
Last year was important to get paid but this season will determine if it’s his last season as a starter.
Trask’s career position is not as bad as ADF like Bakerbuc would want you to believe.

  34. Wyoming Joe Says:

Here we go again! Baker is better than Trask. Accept it and move on.

Honestly, for his sake, I hope that Trask gets traded and is afforded the opportunity to start.

  35. GoneGator Says:

Trask has been everything you’d ask for from a team mate.
His delusional fans and/or Baker haters, not so much 🤣

  36. Bucscoott Says:

we are in good hands if baker goes down

  37. Oneilbuc Says:

The only thing this fan base care about is names they really don’t care about the best players playing. All the Glazers has to do is bring in a player with popularity and they will get hyped up rather the guy is good or bad they don’t care. All you have to do with this fan base is keep a medicory team with a bunch of average players and they will be ok with that. This fan base actually celebrate a 9-8 team as if the bucs won 12 games. They care about being a dominant team. So if I’m the Glazers I will bring in Zach Wilson next and this fan base will make excuses for him as well. Trask actually earned the staring job last year and Baker was gifted the staring job. And this year it will be Todd Bowles, the OC , the o line and my all time favorite it’s a new offense excuses!!

  38. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

No matter what happens here, Trask will have a long career in the NFL. Whether it’s holding a clipboard or actually playing, he will be laughing all the way to the bank. He’s a normal, good dude (not weird), with some real ability. Will be an excellent backup this year.

  39. Beeej Says:

IMO, that guy from the Cowboys is the best backup, and we only know THAT because he got to play a few games when Dak got hurt. If Baker has to sit a couple games this year and Trask kills it, (as I think he will) it will cost the Bucs some serious money in the offseason

  40. Joe in Michigan Says:

Beej: So are you predicting that Trask will be starting for an NFL team next year?

  41. GoneGator Says:

@Onelilbuc it must really suck to “follow” a team you think sucks from top to bottom….
And predict will continue to suck into the future.

From the owners down to fans…. Boo boo boo.
Is this condemnation, of the owners, coaches, players, and fans all about our BACKUP QB ?

  42. Kenton Smith Says:

Hoping the coaches know more than many of these pontificators. If they choose Trask to be our backup then they must be impressed with his ability. Hoping Baker has a great season but I see no reason to believe this team wouldn’t rally around Trask.

  43. Oxycondomns Says:

Its amazing how well trask moves with all the gator fans wedged up his butt

  44. Capt Jimbo Neal Says:

    @Oxycondomns

You mean like when you FSU fans were wedged up Jameis’ butt? Like that?

  45. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

It’s amazing Mayfield can play with all the fangirls clutching him like G.I.Joe with the Kung fu grip!

  46. David Says:

Great back up… So much so that he’ll be gone as soon as the rookie contracts over.

Give up the accolades already, they haven’t put him in a game and they didn’t even activate him for a year.

  47. Oneilbuc Says:

To me I don’t care what school he played for it’s about the best players should start. Last training camp he out played Baker Mayfield and that’s a fact and it doesn’t matter if the coaches gifted him the job or they made a business decision. The facts are he was better and we have the proof to back it up again IRA Kaufman said that Baker was going to be the starter even when Baker has 9 picks to Trask one . So that’s that Baker is the starter and we have to root for him because he’s on the team. But that don’t mean you have to lie for him if he plays bad it’s ok to say he played bad and still be a real bucs fan. If he plays good it’s ok to say he played good and I’m only talking about the real bucs fans not the Baker fan boys or even the Brady fans which I’m so happy they’re gone. And once Baker leaves I will be happy when his sick fan base leaves.

  48. Wild Bill Says:

The Bucs are lucky to have a decent backup like Trask at a low cost. Will he ever be a starter for the Bucs or some other team? Don’t know and don’t care. I do think Trask has a chance to be better than than Mayfield, but Mayfields pay check means he starts until he fails or is injured. As for Trask we will never know unless he gets a chance to actually play with the Bucs or with someone else. Simple as that. Don’t much care one way or the other. Also not convinced that Baker is the Bucs long term future. Great if he is. No surprise if he is not. The Bucs are good enough to be competitive with a good reliable qb vs a superstar. Both Baker and Trask are unlikely superstars. But the Bucs have won Super Bowls in the past without a super qb. I like Licht building a very solid team that can win with just a good consistent qb who can the job done consistently and avoid costly mistakes.

  49. Kenton Smith Says:

Now now Wild Bill. At least you’re half right. You don’t know but you do care. You’re half right that Baker and Trask are unlikely superstars.

  50. Kenton Smith Says:

As far as Oneilbuc goes you’re nowhere near half right about anything. You must’ve gone to school with Wild Bill. An F is an F whether you score 50 percent or much lower. When his sick fan base leaves? You a funny boy!
