Zyon McCollum Told Joe He Can Play Receiver. Sunday, He Demonstrated That

July 28th, 2024

He wasn’t lying.

The biggest trait that Zyon McCollum had coming out of Sam Houston State two years ago was that he was a crazy good athlete.

In fact, McCollum told Joe last week very confidently he could play receiver in the NFL.

Today, McCollum showed all who were at Bucs practice this morning he’s not full of it.

Joe will give Baker Mayfield the benefit of the doubt and type that it was either a busted play or someone ran the wrong route. Because where Mayfield was throwing, there was no one home.

No one besides McCollum.

The projected first-year starter really wasn’t that close to the ball. In 11-on-11 drills late in practice, Mayfield pumped left and threw right maybe 15 yards downfield. There wasn’t a red jersey (offense) around.

However, McCollum looked like he was running the route and that he was the intended receiver. McCollum took off for the pass looking like he was taking off from the line of scrimmage.

McCollum ran under the ball just like a speedy receiver, bobbled the ball a bit, but pulled it in for a pick.

Outside of a pass defended or two while guarding Mike Evans, that was the best play Joe has seen from McCollum since he was drafted.

Yeah, yeah, underwear football. Still, it was an athletic play that backed up McCollum’s boast that he could play receiver right now in the NFL.

Would love to see a video of it.

    GP:

Hopefully Bucs publish video of it. It was past the allotted time granted for media to shoot video or photos.

Maybe a fan uploads the play to YouTube?

  3. Dude Says:

I gotta see this, because from what you described Joe, it sounds like McCollum fielded a forward pass like an outfielder

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

Didn’t Zyon have a similar pick on Trubisky against the Steelers last preseason?

Hopefully all this offseason work transfers over to the season!

    Do it !

Joe, practice notes coming? Cmon man!!!

  7. Mike Says:

The hands are the main difference between WR’s and DB’s. When you get your hands on the ball, you gotta catch it!

Joe, practice notes coming? Cmon man!!!

Had to cut a pod first. They are coming.

  9. My Momma Says:

The natives are getting restless Joe. If you don’t give us those world famous practice notes, we’re going to come after you with sticks and torches soon.

    ^ Lolololol

    You’re not wrong though.

Underwear football doesn’t apply as much to coverage. WR run routes. DBs cover.

A bobbled ball in padless TC is nothing to indicate this dude is anything. I still think Hall will beat him out at CB2 over the course of the season.

This will be McCollum’s break-out year. Still loving that he has a mobile JUGS machine with a generator!
