Manbeast left tackle Tristan Wirfs is demanding a contract extension and the Buccaneers want to get one done. So what’s the holdup?
Re-signing Wirfs is the biggest Tampa Bay no-brainer since Crazy Buffet ruled Dale Mabry Highway.
Joe thinks it could be the contract situation of consensus best NFL tackle Trent Williams of the 49ers.
Williams is doing what Wirfs hasn’t, which is hold out of training camp. Wirfs didn’t practice during the Bucs’ spring sessions but he has been on the field for Days 1 and 2 of training camp.
At 25 years old, Wirfs should command top-of-the-market money and he deserves darn close to that. Reports out of San Francisco say Williams wants guaranteed money (and probably a raise) as he has none left with three years remaining on his contract that averages about $23 million per season.
Wirfs will earn $21 million this year — guaranteed.
The highest paid left tackles are hauling in $28 million-plus per year.
Perhaps Wirfs’ team is waiting to see what the Niners do for Williams, the 11-time Pro Bowler and future Hall of Famer. If they get creative and generous, Wirfs might point in that direction with a new demand.

Wirfs is not as complete of a player as Williams so it shouldn’t matter. 4 years 114 mill with 78 guaranteed (to match his Jersey number). Get it done and over with already.

Wirfs has less mileage on his treads than Trent Williams, so it does matter.

Our southern team does not have as much money as many other NFL teams. Wirfs has to remember he is on the Bucs.

When Wirfs has 11 pro bowls he can demand Trent Williams money… But even as good as he is at 25, he should not get top coin for the left tackle position…Top 5? Sure… But demanding a huge pay raise now when you still on $21M in guaranteed coin is not good business.

One of the Joes (since I can’t refer to them by name, based on the redaction police, even though they are referenced on Ira’s podcast by name….) says that today’s expensive contract is tomorrow’s steal—so if we really think this roster should be in the same stratosphere as the 49ers, price our guy to a point that William’s ego requires more…and cripple the 49ers’ flexibility this year and beyond. It’s a chess move, and it’s our turn to make it, Mr. Licht. Do this right, and you can assert the Bucs as the leader of the next cycle of dominance.

So first off a couple things. Trent Williams is right now older and more experienced. Tristian wirfs is still arguably right there neck and neck with him. So I mean to be fair he’s the next best OT in the league Left and Right. That’s a big deal also for wirfs. Something wirfs needs to understand though is that they’re not in the same states the USD doesn’t go as far as it does in FL as it stands in California. To give wirfs what Williams of California is getting would be so unfair and unjustified. He needs to understand fair representation in trying to get a fair deal because otherwise it will never happen like he wants I don’t think. We can’t lose him. Just figure it out and do it. Idk

I get that Wirfs is one of the best, I still don’t know why it is necessary for this guy to be the highest paid tackle in the NFL. Can we get close? Can we manipulate the contract for more guarantees, save on the cap a bit vs. stroking this guy’s ego? It’s amazing how most of the king’s ransom goes to so few on most football teams, and that the window to win a championship is just so small…1. You have to mortgage the future of the franchise by moving dead cap down the road to pick key free agents 2. You need your biggest paid contracts to not just be good, be healthy but to also live up to the money they’re getting paid i.e. to be great 3. You need at least 3 years’ worth of your draft picks and undrafted free agents to hit while they’re still on rookie deals.
Devin White did us a favor by underperforming and leaving in free agency, and I think Chris Godwin gets traded before the deadline, unless this team looks like a juggernaut before then and we are super bowl bound. Why is this the case? Because we simply cannot pay everyone that deserves a big contract. The math just doesn’t work out. Was there really any way to sign Baker this offseason, then Evans, Winfield, we’re still working on Wirfs. How the hell would we have paid White $20M per? And those that want Chris to stay, if he balls out early, he’s too valuable to keep as we need to keep getting younger, and better. And as Joe continues to point out, we need edge rushers badly.
