Calijah Kancey Impresses With His Mind

July 16th, 2024

So before last year’s training camp even started, Bucs rookie defensive tackle Calijah Kancey was impressing teammates with his brains.

That continued through the year, which is more impressive than just being an underwear football warrior and classroom ace.

“When Calijah came in, it was surprising how much he knew and how fast he got the playbook,” Bucs DT Vita Vea told the Green Light podcast this week.

Guest hosting the show was former Bucs defensive tackle Beau Allen, Vea’s teammate in 2018 and 2019. The pair acknowledged that Allen served as a mentor to Vea during his rookie season in ’18.

It was implied that rookie Vea needed more guidance than Kancey did.

“It was cool to see a rookie [Kancey] come in and to take on — and especially you know the Bucs playbook — and to take on their playbook and understand it and get down the plays as quick as he did,” Vea said of Kancey. “And I think that was cool seeing him as a rookie.”

Still, Kancey was raw. Vea said he helps Kancey pick up tendencies of offensive linemen and taught him to write them down because you have to be prepared to face them again.

Somewhat interesting to Joe was Vea sort of comparing Kancey to Logan Hall, a 2022 rookie at defensive tackle, and noting how sharp Kancey is but Vea didn’t remember Hall’s name.

Allen bailed Vea out be reminding Vea that Hall is the name of his teammate.

Man, been teammates with that dude for 2 years and he draws a blank on Hall’s name? Not talking about the kicker or punter, talking about a guy he sees every day in their position group. WOW

I feel bad to keep forgetting about Logan Hall. But if his teammate Vea forgot his name, we shouldn’t feel bad either. Logan could surprise all of us this season. You never know.

Uh, right! You never know. Maybe Hall and JTS will turn into the “dynamic duo” this year and get 20 sacks between them. And, maybe both get cut this year- -you never know. I’d bet on the latter.

I bet Logan Hall and Tryon Shoyinka are playing for the CFL or the UFL next season. I doubt Hall could even make those teams
