Joe Tryon-Shoyinka Battling For His Bucs Career

July 6th, 2024

Last chance.

The Bucs have sent a very clear, loud, public message to 2021 first-round draft pick Joe Tryon-Shoyinka this offseason.

That message? You better start getting sacks and be an impact player or you won’t be on the roster come March.

Despite JTS coming off his best season in 2023 with five sacks, the Bucs elected not to pick up his fifth-year option. That’s made 2024 a contract year for JTS.

With the drafting of Chris Braswell this spring in the second round, also an outside linebacker, Joe figures the Bucs will give JTS 4-6 games to demonstrate he belongs, that he finally has figured out how to rush the passer in the NFL.

If he puts up, say, just one sack in the first six games, Joe guesses the Bucs get Braswell on the field much more, likely as a starter.

It seems that message the Bucs sent JTS has hit home. Yesterday, JTS’s personal trainer, John Reese, posted a video of JTS working out on Reese’s facility’s Instagram account @Performance.Reese.

Check out the pipes on JTS. You can tell he’s been hitting the weights.

Joe sure hopes for the Bucs’ sake, and for JTS as well, that the lightbulb finally flashes for the guy. Last year in the key season finale against Carolina with the Stinking Panthers still in the game, JTS made the second-best play of the game when he pulled off a Simeon Rice and had a clutch strip sack of Stinking Panthers quarterback Bryce Young.

The Bucs recovered and iced the game, clinching a playoff berth.

JTS followed that up by getting a sack the next weekend in the wild card win over Philadelphia but was virtually invisible against Detroit in the playoff round.

Joe is hoping beyond hope that JTS finally figured it out. If JTS still hasn’t figured it out, he has scant time to do so.

JTS, Braswell, Watts Ramirez. We just need to hit on one of them, and this defense will be really good. I’m not expecting anything from Gregory, my powerball ticket has a better shot of coming through than he does.

  2. Dave Pear Says:

JTS. Male cosmetics developer. The best mascara for men.

    Football, not so much.

  3. Buccos Says:

JTS will get a fat contract next year from someone. Might not be the Bucs. I predict 7 sacks this year

  4. MadMax Says:

its upstairs…im sorry, its just not there…and i hate that. i really want to pull for him but either you got it or you dont.

Its ok though we got this

  5. HC Grover Says:

Plan 9 is a busted draft pick.

  6. heyjude Says:

Great to see JTS working out and over the holiday week. He is trying. Agree with Buccos, he may get a lucrative contract from another team next year. He is only 25 years old and this could be his break-out season.

  7. NCFloridiot Says:

And before you discredit me for all the pop up ads, you’re the only site it happens on

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Buccos … I agree; I think JTS will be good for about 7-8 sacks this year, but he’ll have to accomplish that in probably around 500-600 def snaps. Bowles gave him a lot of snaps last year in games 3-8 (average of about 45 def snaps per game), but it tailed off in the 2nd half of the season (average of about 25 per game). Kinda corresponds with the rise of Ya Ya? No question that JTS has a battle on his hands this year, and it’s one that he’ll be hard-pressed to win.

JTS was over-drafted IMO. Convinved that JL drafted him as a project who had what he undoubtedly thought was a very high upside, but JTS has performed more like the typical mid-round draft pick than as a 1st Rnd selection. I’m personally expecting Chris Braswell to shine this year even as a rookie, but probably not until the 2nd half of the season. Like you said Joe, JTS probably only has until then to make his mark as a pass rusher.

With respectfulness, I hope Joe is making a lot of money from the ads. For years I would read the articles and comments and all of it would make my day, especially during the games. Still does. Then finally I got the nerve to comment too. He brings so much to all of us. All the links and stories Joe posts in one spot are great and less time consuming having them in one place.

Several years ago I had a food blog. You may have no idea how much time it takes. It is a full time job. I started getting a reach out from ads and businesses and had to make a choice and shut my blog down because I have a 40+ job and couldn’t devote the time needed for a blog.

I applaud Joe for his time and research. Good stuff here.

  10. garro Says:

Joe I have seen workout vids from NFL players before that were quite a bit more impressive than this one. JPP jumping out of the pool still impresses me, and a few others. Those guns look weaker by far than Diaby BTW. Now that dude has some guns.

Hope he pulls it off but I have serious doubts. I question way more than just his Physical stature. Why has it taken this long and still he under performs? One of those 5 sacks was a gift from the rules and he got it because he chased the QB out of bounds from behind! So another 4 sack year in my book.

    Go Bucs!

  11. richbucsfan Says:

He just doesn’t have what it takes.

  12. Fred McNeil Says:

I’m hoping JTS finally sees the Licht. Last chance, amigo.

  13. BucU Says:

I’ll take the bet that some team will offer JTS a boatload of money next season. Highly doubt it.

  14. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

JTS is listed at 6’5″ @ 259lbs. I don’t know about you guys, but he does not look 260. Both YaYa and Braswell look thicker than JTS, especially in the legs.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

TBBF roots for all Bucs to succeed….especially high draft picks…..but wouldn’t bet on him

  16. RustyRhinos Says:

Same thing here, NCFloridiot. I’ve been behind bunches of you in Boone, Wilkesboro, Banner Elk, and Lenoir areas… Drive my Diot, they are just curves… Don’t you remember those same issues with palm trees???

I hate the “tiny” x too. And the ads are not making me any ca$h. But I go to other sites and they have small ads that pop- up but do not cover everything. Yes, it is annoying as it takes three clicks to open a post up round here……

  17. Tony Says:

    @Buccos

Might get 7 sacks if he goes back to Washington or plays on a high school team. I never wanted the dude from the beginning & I can see why now. I’d put Watts or Ramirez in over him.

  18. Proudbucsfan Says:

Hey garro, I get your point about JTS and I agree with you but it was Wirfs that jumped out of the pool and JPP that did about 15 back flips in a row, during there draft process and then Joe posted one time a picture of Wirfs with a massive tree on his back it was incredible.

  19. Jeffs grandpa Says:

JTS looks like Tarzan play like Jane

  20. Hodad Says:

I’m hoping the young man does well, why wouldn’t you? Go Bucs!

  21. garro Says:

    @Proudbucsfan

JPP did the pool jump thing in college at USF if I remember correctly.

    Go Bucs!

  22. Beeej Says:

It’s more his pressure rate than the sacks (which he ALSO doesn’t get) Hoping his things for him.

(As far as the “x”, I invariably miss, so I tilt my phone 90 degrees, then tilt it back)

  23. BA’s Red Pen Says:

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. JTS seems like a nice guy. Dude can’t play.

  24. Boomer Says:

Pumping up in the weight room doesn’t do much for math skills. It’s the angle he takes on plays that are questionable.

Think it’s his inability to read the play and take the right angle to the qb (or running back).

How many times did he overrun the play or miss the tackle? Too many.
And can’t fix that by pushing a few more pounds on a barbell.

  25. Big Red Says:

Jason Licht shoots 50% from the free throw line.

  26. Defense Rules Says:

Over on the Bucs site they have a video of Ya Ya mic’d up in practice. He reminds me so much of JPP (he never stopped talking, kept everybody energized & was a pretty good trash talker too). Ya Ya’s also one big OLB like JPP was. Predicting that Diaby will have a very good year in Todd Bowles’ defense.

Chris Braswell’s not as big (about 1″ shorter & 15-20 lbs lighter supposedly), but he showed some nice moves & had excellent productivity (8 sacks, 10.5 TFLs, 1 INT & 3 FFs) in Bama’s defense last year. Not sure that he’ll get up to Ya Ya’s level from last season (7.5 sacks, 8 QB hits & 12 TFLs), but I’m confident he’ll still have a good rookie year (especially in the 2nd half of the season).

Right now the Bucs have 7 other OLBs on the roster (JTS, Nelson, Gregory, Watts, Ramirez, Peterson & Grzesiak). More than likely we’ll only keep 4 active, and I’d put my money on Diaby, Braswell, Nelson & JTS.

  27. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

BA’s Red Pen, you nailed it. Seems like a good dude. I know a lot of good people that aren’t good NFL players.

Hopefully nobody is hoping he fails. He succeeds, Bucs win. I would think we all want that. The odds? Pretty slim.

  28. Ol' Boy Says:

Like JTS, I can lift that exact weight with that same amount of velocity. And, like JTS, I find it difficult to be a pass rusher in th NFL.

For the last 3 months I click on your post and have to click the tiny x on the ad to get to your post… every time from now on, I’m going to post that I had to do so… are you getting rich from this joe?

If you’re using an iPhone – flip the phone horizontal then vertical, or vise versa, and the adds go away.

  30. Jvato24 Says:

5 sacks per season is not a bust dummies, but under performing for his draft status … Sure … If he puts up 7 sacks… He will get paid decent by someone

  31. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Me thinks JTS should look for a new personal trainer. It doesn’t seem like he’s gotten any stronger or bigger in 3 years. This video is not impressive. He looks like a HS player.

  32. Joe Says:

Jason Licht shoots 50% from the free throw line.

That’s about the going rate for good GMs. Seriously.

And before you discredit me for all the pop up ads, you’re the only site it happens on.

Not trying to discredit you at all. Joe doesn’t work with ad networks that use “pop-up” ads. Unless you referring to something different that is actually not a “pop-up” ad.

This is the first Joe is hearing about this so this sort of tells Joe there is a cookie on your computer or something in your browser history that is triggering an ad with The Goo-gal ad network.

If you are referring to ads you are sometimes forced to read when you click on a story (not a “pop-up ad,”). Hey, Joe has to go through the very same exactly thing. If Joe got rid of those, he’d likely have to shut this site down.

It’s a minor pain, but remember, it keeps the lights on for this site.

    heyjude:

Thank you for the kind words. And you’re right, this is a full-time gig. So much so “this Joe” hasn’t seen a Lightning or Rays game in years because too busy doing research or actually out at One Buc Palace or elsewhere gathering Bucs content.

  33. Bucamania Says:

I’ve got high hopes for Braswell

  34. Dave Pear Says:

Several of us have the ad phenomenon. But it’s a minor annoyance and it seems to be a cookie related thing.

  35. Darin Says:

    Joe who?

  36. GoneGator Says:

The video pump does not impress me. Guy does not look to have the build to succeed with power. Hoping for the best for him but this vid doesnt make me any more optimistic about his chances.

  37. GoneGator Says:

He needs to be squatting more. He doesn’t look very “stout” to me. Sorry, not impressed.

As far as the ads go (off topic but it’s being talked about) I’m not sure why an ad, that pops up when you click a story, and forces you to close it before reading the story, isn’t a “pop up”?

I’ll admit it is excessive in some cases but it’s definitely device/browser specific. I get them on the way into (guestimated) 80% of the articles and even leaving articles to return to the front page but only on my “tablet” running Google chrome. On my desktop (Ms edge) I don’t think I ever see them. They are annoying but if it’s helping Joe put food on the table I got no real complaints.

    Let’s go Bucs !

  38. unbelievable Says:

Just doesn’t have the physique of a guy who will ever be a dominant edge rusher.

He’s fast, but he has no power. That can be useful for sub-packages, but not as a primary starter.

  39. WiseCrack Says:

    Bucamania,

I happen to coach some of the coaches’ kids in baseball here locally. Between you and I, Braswell was drafted to be a starter.

  40. Esteban85 Says:

Looks to me like Joe may have skipped leg day a few too many times back in school

I worked out 2x this holiday weekend, 1.5 hours each and I’m not fighting for my NFL career. The guy has no dog in him. And yes, he never looked 260 to me, ever. Let’s move on from him.

  43. David Says:

Too little too late. The only way he sees another contract is if he suddenly has 12 sacks and consistently gets pressure every game.
