Promising Baker Mayfield Numbers

July 1st, 2024

Above-average accuracy.

Well, this is reassuring.

For all the folks out there scoffing at Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield repeating or improving on last year, at least there is a good sign for the 2024 season.

Mayfield was fairly accurate in 2023.

Fresh from the keyboard of noted handicapper turned stathead Warren Sharp, Mayfield was in the top half of quarterbacks for accuracy — or at least, fewest inaccurate passes.

Sharp went through all the passes 41 quarterbacks threw and dissected each incompletion as either an inaccurate pass, a drop, or a DeSean Jackson Special where the receiver bailed and quit on the route.

Of the Mayfield incompletions, he had the 15th-lowest percentage of inaccurate passes. What’s wild is for all the Mayfield haters — and there are many non-believers in the Oklahoma product — Mayfield was just a fraction of a percentage point behind Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow and Brock Purdy, three quarterbacks many Mayfield haters hail as the leaders of the new generation of stud quarterbacks.

Id be interested to know the stats on the first half of the season Vs the second half, seemed like he was a lot more inaccurate during the first half where he hadn’t got familiar with his WRs timings.

  2. DCone Says:

And just a fraction ahead of Sam Howell for the most turnover worth plays who is now a back up at Seattle.

Use whatever stats you want to help to feel better about the Bucs QB situation going into Camp but they still have mediocre at best. Top ten when 4 or 5 top tier QB’s are sidelined.

Heck maybe Pear can even manufacture some facts for ya. He’s already got Mayfield winning a 2020 playoff game in his rookie season of 2018. Now that is impressive. a guy ahead of his time for sure.

  3. Beeej Says:

    WELL, WELL, WELL.

  4. BillyBucco Says:

Not sure what to make of that when 2 of the Top 5 are Final Four teams.

  5. BillyBucco Says:

Sorry read that wrong. Lamar Jackson is terrible.

  6. Dude Says:

Long handoffs and checkdowns, lol the entire internet has access to these numbers.

  7. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

To me, this stat is no different than the grades given for Oline men where only the coaches know blocking assignments.

How can you quantify “inaccurate passes” when no one knows if the WR ran the correct route or if the QB threw a bad pass? Regardless, I guess its good news. Mayfield is our Joe Burrow and Joe will soon have fantasy come true with Ms Watson.

On a separate note, how funny another Watson is at the top of the list of “inaccurate passes”. Good job by Mr Truck Stop Owner.

  8. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

LOL…and just a tick ahead of 30.1% – Derek Carr and 29.5% – Desmond Ridder

  9. heyjude Says:

This list gives me a smile. The Browns went all in on Watson for so much money and a over the top contract and we got Baker. Their loss, our gain. So lucky we got Baker. Baker being close to Purdy’s stat with a five year age difference is fantastic. Interesting that Trevor Lawrence just got that big payday. Maybe it will be an incentive for him this season along with his new back-up being Mac Jones.

  10. Gipper Says:

Mayfield poised to have a huge season. Going to love it when DCone, RodMunch and the others have to take the size 16 snow shoes out of their mouths to eat humble pie regarding Baker. Won’t stop the naysayers every time he throws an interception, has a pass tipped or gets sacked. All those things will happen but it won’t matter when we add up Mayfield complete 2024 performance.

  11. KABucs Says:

    HeyJude, thinking the similar things…
    43.9% – Deshaun Watson
    36.7% – Lamar Jackson
    36.1% – Trevor Lawrence
    34.6% – Daniel Jones

All the above are getting paid ridiculous $$$. At least Jackson & Jones can run and Lawrence is young with upside (is also mobile). Watson is good for 6 games a season so far for Cleveland. Talk about value. LOL

  12. heyjude Says:

Agree KABucs. Good point on the three.

This year the Browns have Jameis too. It is going to be interesting. That is for sure. He could end up being the QB instead of Watson…

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Interesting analysis by Warren Sharp, although I agree with Senor Harry that something like this is pretty hard to quantity without all the facts (blown routes, etc). Did notice a couple of things on about Sharp’s analysis on X (formerly known as Twitter) that caught my attention:

1 – Kirk Cousins was the 3rd most accurate with 23.2% (but ya, obviously that’s overblown somehow because everyone knows that he’s only won 1 playoff game).

2 – Bucs play 9 games against QBs who rated higher last season than Baker did … Cousins (2 games), Mahomes, Goff, Herbert, Prescott, Zach Wilson, Purdy, Hurts. On the good gnus side, that leaves 8 games against QBs who rated worse than Baker.

My guess is that Mayfield will have the best overall receivers to throw to in the NFL this year (Evans, Godwin, Palmer, McMillan, Otton, White, Irving). Since this’ll be his 2nd year working with most of them, I fully expect that his rate of incompletions due to inaccurate passes will improve significantly. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him rank in the Top-10 this year.

  14. SlyPirate Says:

    15th LOWEST?

I love the small print. There are 32 starting QBs in the NFL. 15th lowest is ONE better than median.

Hoorah for “Better than average” … by 1.

(With Canales, we would have celebrated an average scoring offense or running game. Even a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 worse than average would have been nice.)

  15. Saskbucs Says:

I assume anyone posting on here watches the Bucs religiously but at times it doesn’t seem like it. Of course, I don’t remember every throw from last season but I don’t understand the hand wringing about Baker. He passed the eye test with flying colors for me. I saw a lot of accurate passes and I saw a lot of scrambling and buying time/running for first downs.

He is healthy and has matured into a solid QB you can win with. You don’t just lead the Browns and Bucs to playoff wins if you are a bad QB. I had my doubts about him but he’s a leader. The team loves him, he threw for 28 vs 10 and 4000 yards. I don’t know why anyone thinks he will be worse this year unless he can’t get on same page with new OC or is battling injuries.

  16. Joe Says:

How did this guy account for quarterback errors like throwing too short, throwing too long, so on and so forth?

Those are all included in “inaccurate.” Think it is fairly self-explanatory. Either it was an inaccurate pass or the receiver messed up.

  17. Buccaneer rick Says:

Tell baker to a Kendrick Lamar video and tell other quarterbacks there’s no big 3 it’s just big me meaning him lol

  18. Buccaneer rick Says:

Make sure burrow hurts and Purdy is in the video

  19. Faspro Says:

Baker looks baked in that photo…

  20. vadertime Says:

Baker had a great, “show me” year in 2023. Let’s see if he can repeat in 2024 or if 2023 was a fluke. I did notice that he got better in the 2nd half of the season except for a couple of games. I’m rooting for him, but I’ll also steel myself in case he slips into his bad, old form. Go Bucs.

  21. Oneilbuc Says:

That is the dumbest stat I’ve ever seen lol 🤣🤣!!

  22. Joe Says:

Joe, my point is that to determine whether a pass is inaccurate and on the quarterback the observer needs to know the play called and designed route of the receiver.

That’s fair but there are only like three people who would know that and none of them will ever release that info.

You just described the inherent problem with the PFF tribe’s OL grades. How do they know the assignments to know if a guy blew a block? This is also why NFL people abhor the tribe’s oline grades.

  23. Beeej Says:

Receiver breaks outside and ball goes INside… Who’s at fault?

  24. Bakersbucs says Says:

DConehead says man oh man u r pathetic why do u post on this site we like u about as much as u like Mayfield hit the road u POS!

  25. Bakersbucs says Says:

Baker has 5 seasons under his belt he had several good seasons not friggin 1 season he had an outstanding rookie season & 11&6 season + last year I count that at 3 or2/3rds of his career in NFL he is just getting hot let him boil we r in good hands
