Got Better Each Practice

July 12th, 2024

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Famed basketball star Allen Iverson used to bellyache about practice. Maybe that’s why he was never a champion.

Practice isn’t just for power-hungry coaches who want to see dudes sweat. Practice is to hone skills and prove oneself in order to strive for perfection and be the best.

No one is going to suggest a Super Bowl is won in underwear football. But the way WFLA-TV Channel 8 Bucs insider Aileen Hnatiuk saw it this spring, the Bucs were on their way to becoming better each time she saw them practice.

“My biggest take from minicamp is this Bucs team is on the right track,” Hnatiuk said. “Todd Bowles is piecing this puzzle together. Every time we went to practice, it felt like the team got a little better each day. Which is all you can ask for during the offseason.

“Training camp will be full of position battles and players trying to prove themselves. Happy it’s not the quarterback this year. Baker is ready to go.”

That is something former Bucs great Gerald McCoy recently said on NFL Network. Beware Baker Mayfield, GMC said, now that he’s comfortable leading the Bucs, is healthy and, most importantly, confident.

Joe thinks the offense could be sneaky good this fall. Can the Bucs’ pass defense improve, despite losing its best corner? And of course, the pathetic edge rush. Can/will the Bucs find a better one?

Joe believes it is the defense, not the offense, that will make or break the Bucs.

There is currently only 2 players on Offense and Defense projected to start, that Tampa didn’t draft. Baker and the LG.
Sorry but that is saying something and I doubt any other NFL team is close.

  2. Bucnjim Says:

The Bucs are already very good at keeping the opposition out of the end zone. It was the sustained drives that drove everyone crazy. Hopefully, they have been concentrating on this during the off-season. Make some stops and set the offense up with good field position. The scoring will take care of itself.

    “Practice?..practice?..man we talkin bout practice!”

Lt Dan: “No. Were talking about cash backen”! That commercial reference is funny given the Iverson lead in.

BillyBucco– I love that too, reminds me of the Cowboys from the 70’s.

  6. Fred McNeil Says:

Wouldn’t you expect the practices to get better each day?

  7. Lord Cornelius Says:

All offseason it seems to have been assumed Baker is going to regress.

What if Baker has the best year of his career? There are a lot of reasons to think that it’s possible. I don’t think he’s been in this good of a situation with an organization until now.

Got better. That’s all we can ask for, at this time of year

Very encouraging observations. I wonder what measures she was using to determine they were improving.

  11. Dude Says:

It’s what practice is for, you want yesterdays’ mistakes corrected today, and tomorrow you focus on what you can improve based off what you did….today.

You want to layer that progression like homemade baklava.
