Jason Licht Explains Glazer Edict
June 12th, 2024Joe is always intrigued to hear an insider nugget or two about Team Glazer, the Bucs’ somewhat mysterious ownership group.
Perhaps they’re not so mysterious, but Joe still can’t fathom a large bunch of siblings seemingly agreeing so smoothly for so long. It’s suspicious.
Anyway, Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht visited Loose Cannons Podcast last month and talked about being willing to dump players if their situation or performance is souring.
He credited Team Glazer for empowering him to act fearlessly.
“You know what, I’m very fortunate that the Glazers told me from early on when I first got the job. ‘Hey, mistakes are going to be made. Don’t compound the mistake by holdin’ on. The money’s already out the door. Let’em walk. Get another player in,'” Licht said. “And, you know, they understand it. They get it. That gave me a lot of confidence in being able to do that.”
If Joe were having a cocktail with Licht and was in wiseass mode, then Joe would have countered with, ‘then what the hell was Doug Martin doing here after the 2016 season?’ Regardless, the details of specific players don’t matter. Licht has a greener light than many general managers and it’s serving the Bucs well.
Licht praised his staff for their successess and growth in recent years and, with a nod to Team Glazer, noted how his team is “afforded the luxury of being able to move on — look forward not back.”

So … This article is about Antonio Brown, Devin White, and soon-to-be a never-was-a-Buc Randy Gregory?
June 12th, 2024 at 8:41 pm
They better not cut Jose Ramirez and keep Gregory on a 1 year deal if he even makes it to Training Camp
June 12th, 2024 at 8:43 pm
Well, given the fact the Bucs won a Super Bowl with AB and Devin White suggests they weren’t “mistakes.” (Not singling you out Pirate — but any comparison between Randy Gregory and AB is asinine.)
June 12th, 2024 at 9:23 pm
I agree w Joe here
June 12th, 2024 at 9:33 pm
I hope Gregory is reading this because Jason doesn’t need to keep someone who is a mistake.
June 12th, 2024 at 10:24 pm
Better examples are OJ Howard (got a ring but was injured) and Vernon Hargreaves. First round mistakes. Having a free agent not pan out on a short deal isn’t as detrimental. Early picks that dissappoint are brutal. Hoping JTS and Hall turn things around or they’ll end up on this list as well.
June 12th, 2024 at 10:46 pm
There’s no better time for an example to be made. Don’t compound the mistake by holdin on here either.
June 12th, 2024 at 10:54 pm
Doug Martin was kept, and rightfully so, because he had so much proven upside, as a Buc. Maybe Gregory will pan out, who knows? But I’m not as worried because he’s never even shown up. Very similar to your hero Hassan Reddik, Joe. Never even shown up as a Jet. Real nice for them.
June 12th, 2024 at 10:55 pm
Yes to equate Gregory and AB is a real stretch. In addition the obvious character issues there seemed to be a lot of other things going on.
After the Jets game in a post game interview Brady was quick to say that people need to be consideraye to things that are going on in his life.
That same article stated Still, “ Brown should get the benefit of various mental health services the NFL offers players and team personnel. The league and the players’ union have plenty of resources available for anyone who needs it — if they ask”
Key words are If they ask.
Gregory has had one on field fight after the Broncos got Drummed by the Rams in 2022. Wasn’t much and not enough to turn Lynch away from signing him @ the 49ers.
If Gregory has decided to find an alternative way to cope besides the use of weed then good for him. If he gets his mind right then the sky is the limit.
If he indeed ‘Asked’ then any kind of help he is getting would have to be kept extremely quiet as to protect the man’s privacy. Even from the team.
Gregory could show up for Training Camp, pin his ears back and give the Bucs one Hell of a Season..
On the other hand after Gregory’s fight against the Ram’s lineman Raheem Morris did walk by, give him a pat, and a big smile. Getting released and going to work for the Falcons could be another option.

Most people familiar with that podcast call it The Stank and Them Podcast.

Doug Martin had 2012 and 2015. Do the math – maybe Licht was holding onto Doug for 2018.
Sarcasm.
Koetter loved Martin btw. Jameis did him no favors in the passing game either.
Jason is The Man and I’m glads the Glazers know it. That freedom must also extend to any personnel that aren’t cutting it.
Hello, Todd, 10 games minimum with this roster, and thank you for the big move to give Baler the final shot with the red pen.
Evolve!

Any Long time Buc Fan realizes how lucky we are to have The Glazers and Jason Licht.
If you are a more recent fan. Compare our record before they arrived, and after they took over.
It wiill make all of us write’em a big thank you note.
Being a Buc Fan before the Glazers, especially, was literally supporting the worst professional sports team in history. I think we STILL may have the worst overall record in NFL history.
I hope someone looks up those numbers. I really do. The people who stuck with the team thru those years oughta be the next inductee in the Ring of Honor.
Few if any, fans have sufferred more.
Thank you To The Glazers and Jason Licht. You saved us from a dark place

Well said capt. Tim, well said!
A lot of people always wanna complain for them not being perfect… reality check, no one is 😉 if the good outweighs the bad, then your doing a Damm good job (just my 2 cents)

Jason and I will completely take over once the Glazers are ready to sell….and of course this is after I hit the biggest lottery ever and put an offer on the table they cant refuse

Capt.Tim Says:
“Any Long time Buc Fan realizes how lucky we are to have The Glazers and Jason Licht.”
Exactly right and well said. Moved here around 1990 and became a Buc fan. Not as long as many others on here, but long enough to know the difference.

How is Gregory not cut yet?
June 13th, 2024 at 7:19 am
Capt. Tim, Couldn’t have said it any better. Been a fan since the mid 80’s and back then we were praying for a .500 season. Bench seating and bath tub urinals. 2 or 4 win seasons were the norm. Wasn’t until the Bucs signed Hardy Nickerson and had several successful drafts in the late 90’s that things turned around. Really bugs me when fans complain about 9 win seasons especially since this team is rebuilding.

There are two eras of Buccaneer teams.
Culverhouse
and
Glazer
Nothing to complain about regarding the Glazer era.
They changed the culture and have kept the culture quite good. Not elite but certainly good.

@Joe:
One point to remember is that Licht came in with the Bucs reputation was at bottom. He had to overpay for talent and had to sell FAs on how the team would be loyal to them. Vincent Jackson stayed at least a year too long, but he was kept on and finished out his contract. Martin was kept until the off-field antics couldn’t be tolerated. Other players were renegotiated (Dotson). Hit to the wallet but made the point that the organization is becoming a reliable destination. And even the cutting of Baker & company showed worthwhile FA that the team was in it to win it.
Showing faith made it easier to deal with agents and over time changed the reputation of the team for the better. And the word on the street made it easier to put together talent. That was what ultimately attracted Brady IMO.

Wow… the GBoyz are getting old. I remember when they were glad handing at Pepin Rood stadium during training camp shaking hands with any and all. I have a season ticket stub with Malcom’s scribble on it. It was in the Ole Sombrero in some God awful hot pre 1 o’clock start and he was making his way around the stands in the south end zone.
Wow … I am not getting old, I am OLD.
Great memories over the years.

I’ve been a BUCS fan all my life and I’m 43. The Glazers and Licht have done an outstanding job as a whole. People bitc*ing about 9 win seasons need to Get The F outta here. 3 division titles in a row us quite impressive also. I understand our division is in a slump but we are winning games at a good rate. Winning our division is my realistic goal going into every year

Never having had a diagnosed mental health issue, I bet finding a medicine that is helpful in dealing with it and then being told by your employer, sorry you can’t use that and work here could be troublesome for a patient. Hope he gets his issues worked out and if so, this team can at least see if he is worthy of a 2nd chance.
